Modes What is Sandro playing at?

Well, I have to give it to Sandro. Before the PvP people were rightly complaining about lack of content geared towards PvP. He flashes Open Only Powerplay before their eyes, and a feature that was dismissed beforehand as a mundane grindfest all of a sudden turns into the salvation for PvP. And best of all, silenced are the requests for PvP mechanics. More telling, when I advocate dedicated PvP mechanics added to the game rather than flipping a switch on a PvE mechanic limiting it's conents, the important issue is that it's actually not PvE and it's not limiting.

Now PvEers are advocating PvP mechanics and PvPers are drooling over a former mundane PvE grindfest. It's bizarroland irony.

As I said, I have to tip my hat to Sandro. This was very well played indeed. And best of all .... no guarantees, no ETA.

But, in light of the fact that most players play in Open..and the largest complaint is that no one can see PP participants because they 'all play in Private/solo'....it is now obvious the problem is not 'where' people play, but the matchmaking and instancing does not allow for more than what we are seeing.

Which would explain the sudden attempt to a Principal Networking Programmer.
Let's hope they find someone decent, who can explain why anything being open only won't work with their current set up - because I'm tired of explaining it.

Yup, Sandro played it well, just like last time and just like next time.

Its pretty much the opposite actually.

Besides other games have tackled these scenarios in the past. Non issue really. Just glad they are finally doing it.

Elite Dangerous is lookin pretty good.

I remember you told me once. You wanted to be a bounty hunter and go look for the wanted bad guys. Now they are going to make it so you can do that more consistently. Its everything you ever wanted.

Arent you happy?

You're right about being played. Problem is. . . the show ain't over 'till the fat lady sings. Maybe it was all a marketing gimmick or maybe it was the gas ring ignition. Time will tell, as always.

More crystal balls, Jockey? Regardless, let's hope the next time doesn't spoil your day.

They haven't tackled anything, it's all be hot air and no actions.

And what exactly have other games "tackled"?
As WoW was removing open world PvP servers for a battle arena instance (CQC anyone?)

The only thing to "tackle" is combat logging, of which I believe we are all on the same page - public flogging for offenders.

Yup, even more so when they hire that networking tech.
People with cheap internet and lots of children may actually get to see people at prime time......

Willing targets. Which is the difference. Forced open does not make for willing targets.

Though, as the majority of people play in open mode, perhaps the network tech can fix the instacing issues and we will all see more people in open without actually forcing anyone to be there

Apparently "The mundane grindfest called Powerplay may go Open Only, but not anytime soon" translates to:

party-animated-gif-3.gif

"Complete mode and PvP overhaul confirmed any day now!!!"

Perseus, Sensible Party.

Which games? We aren't playing a 'normal' FPS...we are dealing with large speeds and distances (in game). Milliseconds multiplied back and forth mean the game loses integrity in how each player sees another. RL physics cannot be overcome...that is the point everyone is missing....instancing and matchmaking can only be improved so much.

With the US messing up net neutrality on top of everything else...it will be interesting to watch how all this plays out...I just still believe that it won't make enough of a difference to keep the PVP/Open only folks happy!

Yeah. I fight with people from all over the world all the time. We have some shadow rams and stuff. A little bit of teleportation happens here and there. But its better than not seeing anyone at all.

Plus they just listed a job for major server upkeep and changes. Their details are listed on the job posting. So it looks like they are revisiting that with everything else by the way the wording was with the job listing.

Honestly not too worried about it. You should try going out with PVP groups sometime. We fight with people from australia and new zealand. Im in Hollywood California. Wing anchoring and all sorts of things make it possible.

you're making a mountain out of a molehill. These issues arent anything to be worried about to be honest.

I play with people from Ireland and Germany...always have problems with jumping ships...instancing hasn't broken much...but we are on each others friends lists....I hardly ever see randoms. They can certainly revisit the networking, but it can only do so much...keeping in mind that it probably is not a new position, someone moved on, and they are refilling the post.

I understand the basics of working around the p2p/networking architecture...but the problem still remains...Open is not a wasteland because players have left...it's empty because the networking prevents people from getting together....

Let me put it this way. If I can instance with the MCRN group in their own Mobius PG while I was at war with them. Then I could instance with them in open too.

K thx.

So why don't you just play with them then? Just don't PvP, you can still do all the BGS stuff & you'll have some traffic info you can base your expected workload on.

Because we were in a BGS war fighting over territory in colonia. Im not going to just o7 people im working against in a war.

Cmon now. The goal is to stop their progression. Killing their ships allows me to do that. They also fail missions have rebuy. All sorts of things.

No, the goal isn't to stop their progression, you can no more do that than stop the tide coming in.

You goal is to gain more influence than them.

And If I kill them. And turn my stuff in. I pull ahead.

Dude this is not rocket science. I know how Macro and Micro gameplay works.

You guys argue the weirdest stuff I swear.

You guys argue the weirdest stuff I swear.

There is only one of me Skid.

Simple numbers. The time you spend waiting for & chasing other players is time less efficiently spent.

Imagine you are running a courier service, or delivering fast food or something.
You are in direct competition with other courier/fast food deliver companies.
You can either get some of your drivers to sabotage the drivers from other companies, while delivering less, or you can just get all your drivers to deliver as much as possible.
It's much more time effective to evade sabotage while on a delivery than to hunt out the competition.

Similarly, in a combat situation it's more effective to wound an enemy soldier than to kill them (a wounded combatant requires care & rescue, distracting other combatants, a dead combatant is in no rush). But in ED there is no concept of wounding, the mission runner either completes the mission within the 24hr period or they fail it. They are delayed & set back but by less than you are because you have to fly back to dock, they are instantly transported. And if you don't kill them, (and it's much easier to not be killed than to kill) you have only wasted your own time, counterproductively.

Fundamentally you are peeing into the wind if you are trying to stop opposition. Just get on with your own stuff, and if you can instance with them & become friendly with them, maybe you can gain intelligence or even an ally.

As it is your 'plan' seems to consist of wanting an excuse to complain about reasons why you fail rather than focusing on ways for you to succeed.

Assuming the BGS stuff is actually what's motivating you and not just a desire to pop other players ships.

Always be working towards your goal, avoid non-productive delays.

... Killing their ships allows me to do that. They also fail missions have rebuy. All sorts of things.

Then they put you on block and carry on winning the war while you waste your time hunting for people to shoot.

My 6 year old understands this principle.

Yeah, you dont think that wont be changed? Did you read your little 6 year old that they wanna do open only? Do you think they are dumb enough to encourage PVP while giving the chance to block people?

Give me a break.
