What is the Elite logo?

What is the Elite logo?

I always assumed it represented a phoenix, but looking at the 3d versions that are out there now, I'm not so sure. :S

Probably I'm the only one who doesn't know and will look a right dumbatz crank for posting this. :p

UPDATE:
In the real world (this one) the Elite badge is a combination of stylized Griffin, Pilots wings and the Elite logo, by the artist Philip Castle

In the Elite world, it is the emblem of the Elite Federation of Pilots. In-game origin currently double top secret.

Anyway, I've been kindly granted permission to give you the official line on the Elite logo (thanks Michael).

The Elite logo is the emblem of the Elite Federation of Pilots - the body that awards and administers the Elite ratings. Gold badge for Elite pilots, silver for all other ranks.

I know the in-game origin, but my lips are sealed at the moment. Sorry.

I don't know the real-life origin, although I would surmise that someone at Firebird commissioned a design from an artist. This link suggests Phillip Castle as the original artist (scroll nearly to the bottom).

UPDATE: This link mentions specifically that Philip worked on the more intricate design of the "Cobra and coriolis" cover for Elite.

I pretty much also assume its a phoenix, then again it could represent a bird that hit your car windscreen.

The logo is sometimes referred to as the "Robotic Avian", suggesting a bird being represented, but I have no idea of the origin of the term.

Andy Redman's novella Imprint, included with Elite Plus (or it might have been the PC version of Elite) called it the Robotic Avian and signified that it was the logo of GalCop and was mounted on the GalCop headquarters building in Ashoria. The text that stated this was quite ambiguous though - it could have been any angularly styled representation of a bird, not necessarily the Elite logo... Of course, none of "Imprint" may be canon any more.

I always called it the Firebird, after the publisher listed on the box, whose logo was strikingly similar.

I'd be interested to know who originally designed the Elite logo...

It's a graphic that is used to represent a concept, organisation or individual.

The "Elite" Logo is used to signify the computer game "Elite".

:D

In-game I've always assumed it's a badge that pilots all wear on their uniforms/clothes/onesies.

No its an interesting question ...The wings seem to represent Flames so im guessing a pheonix as well ...Especially if you look at the logo on the top of this page..

Burned! I use the default template too. WIth no avatars or signatures so that it's not so obvious that I'm browsing dodgy game websites at work.

Not that I do or anything. I just backdate my posts. Ahem.

Do you know the origin, both in game and in RL?

Apparently it's a griffin.

Which was the original cover for the BBC Elite as well. Having looked at some of his other work, the Elite Logo, as drawn on the original box, seems to be very much in line with his style.

Edit: Seems the answer was posted while I drafted this. The Federation of Pilots Griffin, hmm. Going to take some getting used to.
