Pretty much this.
After 5b, you can buy anything you want and you won't have to worry about money ever again. I'm at 25b Cr and still farm for a bit more. Because you never know...

I might hit a really bad streak and get blown up in my cutter 1000 times.

Probabaly, never been there. Currently closing to 1/5th to the above and I'm slightly concerned...
I should stop buying new ships, have them way too many. Probabaly a reason why my top 1.2B dropped to slightly above 800M level...

I'm just over 5b just doing various missions, and want to pad my account a bit more so that my normal buy ships/experiment/throw away antics doesn't drop me below my new 'threshold' of 5b. Why? I have no idea...

I am playing the same CMDR since 2014 Gamma1. I am just (marginally) above 1.2 Bn. (Or 1.2 Million if inflation is accounted for between Elite v1.00 and ED i.e. I consider 1 Elite v1.00 Credit = 1000 ED credits

- but after so many buffs in credit earning opportunities I think its more like 1 Elite V.1.00 Cr = 10,000 EDs Cr

I would think the median credit balance for all commanders would be fairly low. Because I suspect a large number of players since the game began that stop playing after less than 20hrs of gameplay.

But If you were to calculate using only players with 100+ hours I suspect the median credit balance would be quite high. I would guess at maybe over 1 billion.

That's actually a very valid point.
Factoring in how much players have played and which ones are counted. Someone who got the game for cheap because it looked cool, played it for 20 mins to an hour and uninstalled it because it wasn't their style still shows up in the statistics for having maybe 10 - 20k, which would drag the average assets level down by a lot.
