Discussion What is the most efficient way to crowdsource the 3D system coordinates

RE jump tool: I would suggest using two different routes displayed, maybe two colors. One is least jumps, the other fuel saving option, that uses the non linear fuel consumption to give shorter but more jumps.

Other then that, very interesting visualization of the routes and systems.

Would you mind sharing your suggestions in the thread for the map? So we don't clutter this one with off-topic conversation, and to give some love to my thread as well :D

Currently it looks for routes with least number of refuels needed, and from those the one with the least number of jumps is displayed.

It was done for Beta 1, though, when I didn't consider the fuel saving option to be very useful (the first version had only that, because it was easier to implement). I wonder if you happen to be in a Viper or Cobra? :)

This may be certainly something I would consider doing next. Now I'm planning to improve search, to find commodities to buy/sell nearby, and maybe stations and ships for sale too.

First the exciting bit: I have *ahem* 582 systems of which 12 are outside the Pill, which means (if all others are correct) 570 in the Pill. Is that all of them? I wouldn't bet on it given how quickly I found these four:

Wolf 483: -32.6875,60.8125,-13.9375
LHS 2921: -32.5625,64.625,3.59375

Grannus: -72.125,27.96875,6.96875

I've also gathered enough distances to locate WREDGUIA LW-E D11-129:
WREDGUIA LW-E D11-129: -110.09375, 21.53125, -70.40625

Code:

I wonder if the whole WREDGUIA LW-E D11 series is bugged. I noticed that WREDGUIA LW-E D11-124, WREDGUIA LW-E D11-125, and WREDGUIA LW-E D11-126 often don't show up in the navigation panel when they should. E.g. at Taran. I'm going to ticket this. I could visit them though (except -129).

Aren't there 10 coords outside our current pill?
I first heart about 12, then iirc I saw you mention 2 were indeed inside the pill. Smackers list also mention 10 as "not present".

Haven't sent MB a PM yet so not confirmation/denial but its entirely possible 570 systems as mentioned in the newsletters is NOT accurate.

I've just pulled the latest version of your tool using "Source Tree" (a git windows client) and indeed it has 482 entries. Is this update wrt everything discussed here today - including your new found systems?

Regarding syncing with Smacker. I hope you and Smacker can sync the lot with each other.

I've also gathered enough distances to locate WREDGUIA LW-E D11-129:
WREDGUIA LW-E D11-129: -110.09375, 21.53125, -70.40625

I already wondered if we could get coordinates for WREDGUIA LW-E D11-129 without being able to visit it. Well it turns out you can. Nice!!

Smacker posted a list of 12 systems outside the pill. I checked those and found that two of them actually were in the pill so the number was down to 10. But last night I found two others on my list that are outside the pill (LP 625-34 and LP 336-6). So the number is back to 12 again.

I believe I'm up to date with everything that has been posted here. Not sure if Smacker has got my latest set of 5 yet. I'll probably check my list against his again tomorrow.

Luckily the code doesn't care which end you measure from! I've added a lot of distances for systems that were a little short of data by measuring them from a couple of reference systems. That's how those two 'out of the pill' systems got in - someone had done a couple of measurements to them in Codec's spreadsheet and I got a bunch more distances to them without actually trying to visit (and without noticing they had to jump lines to them apparently).

That is easy, just visit 4 (or 9) other systems and use system map to get distance. With your 20LY Hauler should be fast to get good spread between reference systems.

Brilliant! I have added those to my set, will repost the Pull request.

My Count = 272 in Pill + 10 outside

EDIT: Ah, OK just read your post above, will modify those extra 2 outside

When even I can't get up to date with my own thread. Where is the world coming to ;-)
Thanks for the clarification about and 10 and 12.

Smackers latest pull request does NOT have your latest set. Also checked his fork. Can't find them there. Doesn't mean he has not updated it on his machine though. And of course you just posted them 15-30 minutes ago ;-)

Gonna create a post later on wrt syncing your file and his file. There are a few differences when NOT looking at the coords. As in crediting, capitalization of system names and the "non present" (in the crediting column) tag to flag if a system is in the pill or not.

I've done some checking and I'm quite confident there are no other out of Pill stars in there. So I think really are on 570 now.

Just send a PM to Micheal Brookes to check if that number of 570 (mentioned in a newsletter) is indeed 100% correct.

  • If so mission accomplished ;-)
  • If not the "find new needles in the Galaxy Map haystack" continues...

Fingers crossed.

"Finding the missing needles in the GM haystack" game CONTINUES.

Got a reply from Michael Brookes. As always he was very fast with a reply ;-)
RedWizzard: your suspicion was CORRECT.

Michael Brookes: I think there's just over 600 systems in the bubble - 607 if I remember correctly.

Hence, we still need 30-36 star systems ;-(

Not sure if a new thread "SB2: Finding the last star system names in the pill " is the best way to go. Commanders don't have to do crowd sourcing of distances. Just checking and reporting back new star system names. I will explain how they can do that most easily. Not 100% sure because commanders in this thread like RW are still calculating new coordinates.

What do you all think about it?

There is really just two ways to go about it.

1) Start in one end of the bubble using system map and check systems with an eye against the list.
2) Make a visit list of known systems, visit them 1 and 1 with a long jumprange ship and check all the systems you can jump to against the list.

Not sure what you mean with "check systems with an eye".

Note: Does the nav menu show all systems you can visit with current LY jump range?
Twenty 20 LY in my case OR is it a fixed list - showing everything up to 20 LY?

I find the galaxy map quite cumbersome to use. I've been using the second method which works well - I have a page which can sort the list of known systems by distance from a selected system. I compare that with the list in the navigation panel.

Updated your tool this morning with git. I can't seem to find that page?
Iirc in the past in the entry.html file there was such a list- 5 systems I believe.

Oh wait: Did you mean the systems.html page. Select a system and then sort ascending the "Distance to <selected system>" column? If so that works like a charm. A bit similar to the local command of TD.

That's the one. It's a little annoying in that you have to resort twice when you jump to a new system. I might see what I can do about that tomorrow.
