Newcomer / Intro What is Your Theme/Trademark?

Do you have a style, or theme, among your ships or even perhaps in the way you complete your objectives?

I have a common thread running through several of my ship names; the subtlety of which I hope is not lost on everyone:

Clipper - Part Time Model - Mostly used for mining
FDL(1) - Sting - Bounty Hunting
iEagle - EXCITER - >700m/s top speed
FDL(2) - Hot Damn! - has heat management problems
Corvette - Saturday Night - it's alright for fighting

What's your theme or common source of inspiration?

I just build my ships for specific roles and they tell me what their names are.

Sidewinder (first ship) MSS Sunrise as in a brand new day in my ED life
Sidewinder (small miner) MSS Chip as in we go chipping rocks to find what we can find
Eagle (bounty hunter) MSS Aquila aquila being the genus of eagles
Hauler (surface prospector) MSS Proteles proteles being the genus of the aardwolf that digs for termites
Adder (inter system trader) MSS Ying Yue Chinese for reflection of the moon
Cobra (short haul trader) MSS Fang well because she's a cobra
Dolphin (passenger liner) MSS Wake Rider just because it's a cool sounding name, my passengers like it and of course dolphins like to ride ship wakes
DBX (exploration ship) MSS Rattler as in rattle snake of which the diamond back is one of
T6 (trade ship) MSS Prudence I'm a retired truck driver and Prudence was the name of my truck when I drove - main ship
AspX (mining ship) MSS Dusty because miners get really dusty while working

The MSS part is Mo's Space Ship

This is not to criticize the OP but really - A Corvette so quick - the game is being daft at the moment.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but I think you are misunderstanding

I may be new to the forums, but not the game. Developing a theme is something that should come with time, and develop naturally as to not be forced. My theme actually started with a ship I don't own anymore. I saved up enough to buy a Cobra MkIII, and oh man what a difference it was from the sidewinder and hauler I had used. It was the turning of a new page, a new beginning, a "genesis" if you will. So I named it Phil Collins.

While not every ship I develop reminds me of music (unless there is a song called Princess Monstertruck), I can't help but think of music when I'm planning a build or piloting.

I was indeed, mea culpa.

Apologies to you but still the game is being daft with the payouts for mining so high at the moment. :)

My theme is 'Wandering Star'.
I had to sell my much beloved AspX and my FAS to buy my Anaconda.
So now I've got just the one ship and ramble about aimlessly.

Not sure if a theme. I just like to play the old bitter space trucker so with an exception of an Asp for some exploration and rescue, all my ships are haulers and are designed for it. My T6 has a little of exploration with the vehicle hangar and the DSS.

For the names, I try to intercalate between quenya (the elf language invented by Tolkien) and Nahua(tl) just to make them sound exotic.

I simply use Deep Purple or Pink Floyd songs... and mostly black paints. With a few exceptions.

For example (on PC):

Python = Black Knight / Black Knight 2
Cutter = Mandrake Root
Corvette = Stormbringer
Clipper = Astronomy Domine
Courier = Speed King
... and Burn, Machine Head, One More Rainy Day, Hush, Fireball, etc.

There are some oddities, though: Black Mamba, Millenium Krait, The 932 (my Imperial Eagle - guess why)...

On the Xbox account (played on holidays), things are more casual. For example I have a passenger Python that is called The Money Bus.

My themes? Well, Ashnak (as an Orc) is using green themed paint jobs (where available), thrusters, weapons, clothing, while Azzie Elbub (as a minor demon) is using red. Azzie's ships are mostly named after songs (when Ashnak set off to travel the long way to Beagle Point, I hadn't set up that theme yet):

Krait Mk. II combat build: Ballroom Blitz
Sidewinder combat build: Lady In Black
Krait Phantom for mining/expedition: Clementine II
Fast racing/combat iCourier: Midnight Tango
A Dolphin, still parked out in the Pencil sector: Lollipop

the exception is a golden Mamba: Scaramamba

A few others that I rarely use haven't been updated to that naming scheme yet - and as I'm currently out with DW2, aren't likely to be updated in the near future.

I don't have a consistent theme or roll that I play other than being a generalist.

My ships all have a registration ROG-XX which is based on my character name, most of them will get eventually the same paint schemes.

Their names are based on many things a space pioneer, a space capsule that never flew, spaceships from science fiction, ships and boats, some are punning takes on its name or nickname, some related to what I was using the ship for originally.

They include Oakley, Delta 7, G.Titov, Abdiel, Britannia, Jackhammer, Hanger Queen, Monica, Centennial Hawk and Spectre.

Mine have been named for birds; trying to do birds that somehow work for the ship's job. (then I have a habit of multi-taskng some ships so... these seem to all be crow family)

Cobra III - small all-rounder/missions - Blue Jay
Vulture - Hunter (obviously) - King Fisher
Asp Explorer - miner - Thrasher
Krait II - medium all-rounder/missions - Raven

Medium combat might be Peregrine, when I get one some day. Etc.

Cool question! I assumed others do this but didn't ever ask.

Not really a theme, but:
Python - Moneymaker
FDL- Deatharrow
Vulture- Dark Arrow
AspX- Destiny
Type9- Dodo
Cobra- Nostalgia
Krait MKII- Mother Goose

Yet i don't see the problem. Sure credits are cheap by now. But it doesn't matter if you have one Corvette or a dozen.
(Or like me, none of them, but a collection of other ships. )

Not only do you only fly one of them, but it matters less than ever before, how much credits you can sink into them. It's the engineering which makes the difference. And unlocking all engineers and fully engineering a ship from scratch still is a long road. Even more: while buying and selling modules doesn't cost you any credits, selling engineered modules (if your storage space is getting tight) costs you all of the materials used for the engineering done.

So all in all, via Engineers, we have a new currenty (materials) and hidden currency sinks. (E.g. changing the modules engineering, changing modules, other module sizes for other ships, etc. ) Mind you, i still dislike engineers.I think that they are well over the top and are a catastrophy for the game and its balance. They are a huge problem for FD, whenever they try to create new content which should be challengine for veteran players while not being mass-murder on anybody else. But they do provide a new currenty, which unlike credits, do not suffer as badly from mudflation and provide a long path of progression.

And on the topic itself, hmm. I don't follow a common theme, but am a bit all over the place. I mean, my imperial ships are "Pieces of Eight", Jolly Roger" and "Royal James". That's thematic. Then there's a number of ships based on my "crew". (My wife has plenty of plush pets, some of them ended up on my computer table. Among them some plush dogs, several plush crabs and a plush guar from ESO. ) Based on them, i have ships in use with names like "Iron Dog", "Werecrab" and "Guar Dian". And some other names are just random, e.g. my Krait being "The Krait Escape".

So no, i guess i don't follow a certain line. It's just what comes to my mind and how i have fun at the moment a new ship needs a name. :)

And ah, yea. Last not least, i know that some commanders like to add numbers to their ships name when they lost a ship. Based on that, i still ponder if i should call one of my ships "Integer Overflow". :D

Trademark? I'm too insignificant CMDR to have a trademark which would be widely known.

Theme - this may be. I tend to pick paint jobs that goes along my avatar and CMDR name (which is White-Red, for those who didn't get the reference). I'm highly disappointed with the fact that Squadron paint job isn't available for every ship. Due to that I have other paint jobs selected for few other ships that break the color theme.

Another thing that may be treated like a theme - naming. I tend to use notable female anime characters as a ship patron. Or character names I created for other RPG games. Tho my combat ship will be always named Ayanami Rei (who know that name should also get the reference and reason why). And as always, exception with FDL - ship I totally accidentally named "Fleur du Mal". Fleur du maL; FDL. Found that fitting.

So... anime named white-red painted ships.

I’ve chopped and changed many times since I started playing. Currently Rock Hunter is running the Rock Haulage Co. A company that mines stuff and moves stuff so all the ships are set up for mining or hauling and are given female names of no more than three letters (it’s all I get after a dash and the company name) so Mia - Rock Haulage Co. would be the name and the call sign MIA-73. All in the vibrant orange fleet livery - you get more colours for the same price which allows me to use vibrant green for my science ships, yellow for taxis, red for explorers and blue for combat. If I change my mind I’ve got various colours to choose from.

All non Co. ships are given the R.H.S. prefix, like Mo it’s Rock Hunter Ship and named after Scientists, Sci-Fi writers and Explorers.....the combat ships I always find hardest to name. I tried famous ancient warriors but that seemed a bit naff and obvious, I tried tough sounding names but that had the same problem so I’m currently going with lyrics that I like the sound of.

My alt account is the classic City and Town naming theme apart from my DW2 Phantom which is the Shiranaihito which, hopefully, is Japanese for Stranger which seemed appropriate and sounded ‘right.’

I’m always surprised how important I (and many many others it’s seems) find getting the right names for my ships. Forty five and far from fully grown up.

If you like keeping your naming based in contemporary individuals, would it be too ironic to go with Nobel Peace Prize winners? Only other things I can think of would be obvious as well (famous warships, or British WWII planes which had jazzy names), or a bit too grim (serial killers).
