What keeps you playing?

The purr of my viper engines, the awesomeness of hyperdrive and trying to interact with the story/Galnet news.

My Laptop being repaired. The part that needed is on back order. If I known that I would of use Ebay to order the part and had it running. :(

There's not really any other options, so the fact that Star Citizen is not done yet keeps me playing. Arena Commander is fun and all, but I like exploration more. Elite is easy and mindless so that kinda keeps me playing too. Why I'm not sure yet...Probably because at the end of the day I'm so exhausted that I don't want to have to think and be careful about playing a game. I don't want some hard challenge.

The graphics are pretty. The play area is infinite and so I keep looking for that "perfect" system that has all of the things I want in it. I'm sure as the game gets more depth this will be an even greater self imposed challenge. Which excites me. The game's potential excites me and I think that's why I'm sticking with it. I want to see where it goes and I truly hope it ends up getting deeper.

If it can't add enough features by the time Star Citizen launches and I can land, explore, and do more things in SC, then come next year I'll likely stop playing Elite. I might log in here and there, but my time is very limited between work and kids and such...So I only have the bandwidth for one game really. Today it is Elite...But I don't think it's a strong enough title to keep me hooked for more than a year at this point. We'll see.

Astronomy nerdery (peet peeve: every single game ever that can't be bothered to do the sky properly).

Also no glass walls where they don't make sense.

Entertaining myself until a better designed and developed Elite game comes along, like Star Citizen or No Man's Sky.

Everything. It's the game I've been waiting for twenty years.

Exactly! (except in my case it's 30 years.)
Also: being able to really fly a spacecraft (I was born way too early!) And the knowledge that there are things I haven't seen and things I haven't done.

Among many other things .................
I love trading and Ferreting out profitable trade routes,
Gaining reputation by doing charitable runs on the side
Being greeted "welcome respected ally" by "Green" starports.
And slowly progress in rank.

The beauty of it all - chasing & fighting enemies, exploration, etc - inside the Rift, even docking's a dream!

Mine says "Greetings respe... oh, it's you. You have an outstanding bar tab. Please remedy this Commander!"

But in all seriousness and in answer to the OP...

I can supply resources and materials to those who need.
I can hunt down and eliminate unsavoury elements.
I can aimlessly wonder around in unexplored systems just gawking at the scenery.
I can (and have) visited places I have only read and dreamed about.
I can tip my hat to fellow travelers as we pass in the infinite void.

I am the commander of a star ship and the captain of my own destiny in a 1:1 scale replica of the very galaxy in which I live in real life.

And I love it :)
