What kind of sales numbers can ED expect to see?

Bottom line . . . a steady income stream is required but I can't see how they can successfully monetise the current model.

Probably the same way the company has managed the last 20 years. You also need to factor in all the existing licensing deals they have in place.

Long term evolution

I think the idea is for a very progressive roll out, so that the universe can expand and become more interactive and complex as a system... perhaps, like notches of applied reverse entropy.

The idea, I would like to think, would be to have a game that is playable for the next 30 years, where people can play their 2-5 hours a week or 2-5 hours a day and still enjoy it.

As P2P becomes better engineered, the running costs could be offloaded to guilds, alliances, planets, stations or even wealthy/enthusiastic players.

In terms of the big bang, we may be past the inflation stages - but we are barely into generating background microwave radiation.

So the sales will be constant, I would hope, in line with a never-ending game.

Today someone wrote in this forum that ED had a budget of 8 mio pounds, thats about 13 mio $. I am pretty sure the timeframe for this budget ends with 2014, because ED constantly say that they will release the game this year.

If you substract the KS and Beta Backers ED needs AT LEAST sell 160.000 units to break even. (50USD / copy)

Not really. 85k copies will do - FD has now at least 5M from crowdfunding and preoders at this point. So that leaves recoup costs for 3M.

I expect FD to have collected at least 6M at the time to release.

6 mio copies at release??!

I mean, even AAA Games like Bioshock Infinite or Tomb Raider didnt sold that many copies... AT ALL.

No, i cant believe this, sorry. It would be great yes, but i expect 250k - 500k at Release and maybe 1 - 2 millions after 18 month (If Frontier release it on steam).

EDIT : Well, i read again and i am pretty sure you ment 6 mio dollars, right?

I meant 6M pounds, and what I meant that this will be a sum they will have already when retail release lands.

My own fears exactly, that those interested already got it.
Some whohave not heard about it who played original elite will offcause
also want it, but that will not add many more players.
What's needed is to bring new blood in and steer the FPS generation
away from the FPS games and show them eliteD hoping it's not
scaring them away with it's "complexity"
But the issue is to spread the word, and for FD and have well placed adds videos etc when it comes out to boost sales.

Essential is for those who already got it is to show it off to all gamers
that comes by. Word of mouth reccomodation is bound to bring a lot of new
players in, thats how i been introduced to many new games.

why does it matter ? game is close to release anyway, the KS budget is probably long gone so if they will release in September and sell 30-50K more copies there even is a bit of profit to pay back the investors and everyone will be happy.

then the Microtransactions can pay for a 2016/17 expansion.
But they should not only sell ship skins, but also Premium Weapons, Premium Ammo, different Boosts etc.

best option after release would be to give away the basic game for free but let people pay money for ingame stuff and unlocks, docking passes, etc.

there should also be a Premium currency available in the store that buys special items you can only get with Premium currency, maybe a premium mining drill that gives x% better chance for finding something than a standard drill

weird thing happened apparently i got one of my post redacted. because i went off on a hipster who said it would be cool if not that many copies were sold of the game so it wouldn't be "mainstream". i told him some mean stuff. sorry.

but i stay with my commitment to saying i hope millions of copies are sold so more developments in this game would happen.

and to the moderator who ever it was that redacted my post on protecting Elite.....are you ok? why are you protecting the dude that could diminish your game?
what a strange forum.

anyways excuse me while i tattoo elite on my body somewhere.

Seconded. I think it'll do well, but it is a niche title and I don't think the devs have any intentions to chase the mainstream market. I know people get shirty about this kind of stuff, but I'd like it if the game remains a little inaccessible. Nothing ridiculous, but just enough to keep it a bit exclusive.

I agree; (a little) exclusivity is fine by me. Nothing that is truly detrimental to sales success...:)

You believe that a person who was honored by the Queen, is going to content himself with 1 or 2 million copies ? Let us be serious

;)
