What other games are we all playing?

They look pretty blocky to me. Blocks have different shapes (they're not all square) but they all follow the same basic pattern as Minecraft does, so you have to be creative to not have your end result look blocky.
Yes it is Minecraftian like that because the build/crafting mode is geometrically modular (in order to facilitate building design). However the dev has teased some new build design features which will allow for more complex geometric shapes like curves, spherical geometry in a future update. And the ability to build large scale features like bridges the scale of the SF Golden Gate bridge. o_O

That looks like an early graphic of a ship (before it came out of Early Release status on Steam). Those exaggerated angles don't really exist in the current game anymore like in a recent faction ship battle shown in the video below:

Also see the SE Economy update link I just posted. You can see the bases, ships and land vehicles are significantly less blocky from the graphical update. Also bear in mind the game recently just left Early Release on Steam. It has had a significant amount of updates with it's existing DLCs since then. But then again, it's all a matter of personal taste. SE is NOT the high fidelity universe that SC is. It's somewhere between the functional realism of ED and arcade style game play that NMS is. And again, a matter of personal taste ☺

Okay, that’s the second time I’ve seen that abbreviation, and I’m drawing a complete blank at the moment. I may regret asking, but what does this stand for?
Apologies for the brainfart. EGS = EgoSoftware. I was mentally comparing SE game play to other games with space legs i.e. X4 at the time when I typed that 🤣
But like I said, it's the space version of Minecraft. IMO SE is somewhere between ED and NMS/X4 from a game mechanics perspective

One of the best things about SE, apart from building anything you want, is maintaining those things. I build in creative then move the ships (or whatever) over to survival. With large ships upto a km long this can be difficult, but the one above I put on, works very well and is fairly easy to maintain, provided I don't run into too many pirates, which I avoid.. ;)

But finding fuel, resources for repairs etc, as you travel along is quite satisfying. :)

Plus... You can feel the scale when your out of the ship.. Something very missing in ED. SE is beyond ED imo..

Why would you assume that?

It's about putting blocks next to other blocks. Dull as dishwater for me, but others enjoy it, so who am I to argue. 🤷‍♀️
If you're not the creative build mindset type, then why waste time building? Just download ships, HQs and other assets for free from the Steam Workshop. Or join a PvE or PvP faction org on a multi server and you'll have complete access to all their fleet ships, HQ and other assets. You're only limited by your imagination in SE IMO.

Yes. The space leg driven EVA game play feature is what is sorely missing in ED to date. I'm really hoping FDev will be adding these to the game next year. That and atmospheric planets that SE and Empyrion Galactic currently now have.

Playing The Outer Worlds was a breath of fresh air. Now that I've had a solid 12 hrs under my belt, I'm relieved at least one industry dev still believes in #SavePlayer1. And is still committed to the fan base through support of single player game play i.e. via player choice, and world environment consequences for player actions that affect the MQ/side quests, NPC reactions etc. And does NOT believe in cancerous in game microtransactions. (CDPR with upcoming CP 2077 will be the 2nd one to date).

I'd also have to say this formula is 100% nirvana for any space game:

Star Citizen's HD graphics, immersive atmospheric planets/interiors for planetary stations & ships, PC customization, diverse ship type design

+ ED superior flight model, BGS, space stations & Milky Way Galaxy

+ Subnautica game mechanic for underwater exploration of Earth like worlds

+ NMS/Empyrion Galactic game mechanic to RNG POIs

+ The Outer Worlds deep RP game play and player choice

+ Space Engineers sandbox build/craft mechanic
PERFECT space game

Is SE "done", or like ED is the developer still working on it?
No, it's still getting regular updates and also new features added. Plus there are some very reasonable priced 'Decorative Packs' etc available, well, worth buying as the game itself is really quite cheap to buy.
Community and modding is rife, so that adds lots of free content too.
:)

SE recently left Early Release status on Steam. But unlike other Early Release games (released or not) the devs are still (aggressively) working on it. They've been adding the capacity for more emergent sandbox game play loops (like paid PvE or PvP driven Bounty Hunting with the new ATM feature). They also maintain a highly interactive, working relationship with the fan base. And unlike SC, they actually deliver on their promises of requested fan base features. They're extremely proactive in implementing fan base feedback into successive game updates (like the recent Engineer Economy one that added QoL features and emergent game play vending trade and ATM finance machines). They also have several planned feature updates and DLC releases in near future. Just like they recently added fan base request in this update to the decor pack as of yesterday. The existing modules for crafting buildings, land vehicles and space craft have all been overhauled. With a higher quality of module meshes and texture skin customization

Six anniversary update released yesterday on Steam:

edit: this beauty of this game is all about attention to detail. With 100% functionality of said added detail. The small customized touches that you the player can build (or d/l off Steam Workshop using other player's work) can put into designing your environment buildings (decontamination showers, med bays, food dispensers, functional beds, toilets, entertainment objects like jukeboxes, hydroponic farms etc) and ships/vehicles (adding small grid access ladders for vehicles v. large grid for building bay access etc).

Good example is at 1:24 min where the interior of a new lab module is shown. Note the message shown on the screen. A player/person made that customized message. They apparently also designed sections of the building with those areas that the lab is a part of. And then decided to quarantine off those areas to player access. The only way to re-access them is via activating the switch at the control panel terminal where that screen is located.

This SE is really tempting me. How does it work when starting out - do I get my own planet like NMS, even in multiplayer? I'd probably want to start off alone to figure everything out, but then take what I build and explore the multiplayer universe.

Oh, and does this game support VR?

If thinking about buying Space Engineers, just be aware that it isn't a traditional game as such. It's a sandbox in a true way. ie. you really will need to build your own gaming world/universe in there, especially SP.
MP clans are building their own already, so if you like MP, might be better to join a group.

Watch plenty of vids about it first, prior to buying..

I'm not putting anyone off buying, it just needs lots of time.. 'Lots of time'.. I said that already didn't I.. ;)

I have to add this having read my own post here.. : 'KSH' have gone a long way to make SE survival a game, but planets need placing if starting a fresh world that isn't one of the pre-done types. I don't think the pre-done ones are very good, to be fair.
There are 100's of mod planets and some stock ones, but they will need placing out. Once placed the engine will generate (well mostly), trading stations on your planets (not the older mod planets). Also nearby planets you have placed. So the game does help you along whilst building your universe. I play and build as I go, it's great fun.

May 10 2019 so it's recent i.e after it's Feb 28th Early Access Release on Steam this year. But before all the 4 current DLC QoL expansion packs. The 4th update was released as of yesterday. Couldn't resist shilling showcasing these pics from it! 🤣

Duck. Seriously. If you support SC, then the cost to play this is pennies on the dollar. 🤣

Especially given the Steam sale for base game and 1st 3 DLC (now discounted at $2.79 USD each). Besides a ton of bug fixes, the new DLC that just came out yesterday did a terrific job with better graphics, RP/functional QoL modules like the jukebox/shower (that were long begged for fan base requests) and some other great features. Just check out the 6th anniversary video that I posted above. You also have zero excuse for not getting this btw, since you already support ED (give or take the Horizon DLC, store skins etc) by default of being on here.

On VR: http://store.steampowered.com/app/1142180/SE_VR_World_Demo/

Basically when starting out...
As shown in the screen shot of my game below: being the sand box game SE is, you can immediately jump into your own world. Either via dev/player scenario based or sandbox mode....

148583

...or play with other ppl by joining someone else's game server. The screen shot below is from a login via Steam I just did some 15 mins ago. At the time of this screen capture, there were some 973+ player/dev servers. And counting upwards dynamically of this number. All of these vary with different game modes (Survival for solo/group, PvP and PvE oriented). Some of these servers are public Keen dev based (have a star beside them). Others are public player based like RagnarRockPvPvE. And then there are the private/invite only servers like Pingperfect below (has a padlock instead of a star):

148581

HOWEVER

after creating and equipping your own custom avatar (which may take a while if you bought one or all of the DLC packs), I HIGHLY recommend you start a new game and do the in-game tutorials. The devs published a great YT video suite which you can access from inside the game. They're a practical, intuitive way to teach you EVERYTHING you need to know (or forget based on playstyle) to get started playing the game. The official YT link to the first tutorial is below. Be sure to watch the first video, as the Dev answers all your questions at 0:30 min in :D

Then jump into the default scenarios to learn how to master the fundamental game features like flying ships, repairing equipment, fighting tactics etc. in solo mode in a new game. Opposition and interaction will be with NPCs. Learn how to survive on the fly. While efficiently gathering/mining/engineering/scavenging resources and DIY building/crafting your own base HQ:

148584

Alternatively before jumping in, consider watching this set of fanboy tutorial videos before any DIY sandbox scenario construction. Splitsie adds a degree of player insight that's missing in the dev tutorial videos. His videos are also newer with the updates (as they were recently uploaded several months ago v. the dev's official upload last year).

After this, joining a public server (as shown in 2nd menu pic above) should be your next move if you want more challenge with player PvE and/or PvP interaction.
There. You should have now gained just enough knowledge to efficiently kill yourself.

ps: after you graduate the tutorials, consider d/l player created scenarios/worlds, ships, game play improvements, building modules etc from the Steam workshop. The content shown in the left panel are mods I recently downloaded from the Workshop.

148585

Either tweak these d/l content or use them as is. Or design/create/build your own content like challenge sandbox world scenarios. Or create something awesome (ships/land/water vehicles, buildings like homes, player base HQs, scripted mods that add immersion like eating/drinking/sleeping, HUD UI etc). And sharing your creations with the SE community by uploading them to Steam Workshop.

btw: If you're into realism for the Survival element, consider the Daily Needs Survival Kit mod here. Adds the daily need to eat/sleep/drink to existing vanilla O2 and power needs. Now you can recycle your biowaste and turn that into power/fertilizer. Which can be used to process/grow your own organic hydroponic food labs!
