What other games are we all playing?

Another Alien Isolation VR recommend here - almost far too intense for me, though, so I never completed it!
The free Warzone's been a blast, taking me back to a decade ago, when I last played any serious amount of CoD.

I may do a couple of play throughs before dipping my toes in
Btw. if you haven't, I very much recommend watching a vid on how the Alien AI was programmed. It's quite fascinating and one of a kind insanity the devs pulled off.

In a shortcut - the Alien has got two AI "brains", basically.
One brain is a "cheater" - it knows exactly where you are. It's done for the gameplay reasons, simply so the Alien doesn't wander around on the opposite side of the station just to never find you. It also knows when you complete a certain mission goals and whatnot. But the trick is, this brain cannot control the body of the Alien. It can only "advise" the other brain on your location once in a while (and it cannot do anything if you're actually close).
The second brain controls Alien's body, but it doesn't know where you are. But it can "hear" (i.e. gets your location if you make a noise) and "smell" (i.e. it knows where you WERE a moment ago, for example if it walks through a hallway you've been to a minute ago, it can catch your scent and tries to track you down).
That's why the Alien is so life-like and very unpredictable in what it will do. It doesn't have any "patrol patterns" so to speak and no default attack modes. It really does what it wants and what it feels is the best course of action against you. The only thing hard-coded into its brains is that it wants to kill you.

It's truly fascinating stuff. (for me, anyway.) I've even seen devs playing it and being amazed (and often quite surprised).

I used the “Unpredictable Alien” mod for my VR playthrough - it tweaks a few of the ‘cheater’ settings, I believe. This means the Alien is not always guaranteed to pop up wherever you are in true gamey fashion. For me it was a much more creepy experience, sometimes getting lulled into a false sense of security thinking, “oh it must be over the other side of the station” before suddenly hearing the motion tracker squawk into life - the times with the beastie turning up became a lot more tense!

Currently I am replaying Assassin's Creed Origins (just finished) and AC Odyssey.

The world building in these games is beyond beautiful and the game mechanics are really good too. These are such incredibly satisfying open world games.
I love the mercenaries that hunt you in these games. I love to see how they retrace your footsteps and search the area where you have just been. It adds a nice touch of tension.

I'm gonna have to re-play the Odyssey at some point, this year. I've already finished it three times, but it's such a beautiful game. Even just living there and traveling around is awesome, you don't even have to DO anything. :)

Mhm. It's mostly the tether. Alien is tethered to player. I removed that from player and it isn't as obvious anymore. And also a lot less tense. Not sure about the smaller maps.

Tell me more about this "Dual Universe" game. I saw a recent trailer for it and it made me immensely excited!
The most important thing to note, I think, is that the game is in development since 2014 and the release date is nowhere in sight. Just endless alpha builds and roadmaps. Since 2018 when they almost entirely stopped content development and said they wanted to focus on networking and stability, nothing really improved.

It reminds me a bit of one other game. Wonder what its name was...

Well that's a bummer, as the video really looked compelling. :(

I have a feeling that it will be one of those games that are always in "early access alpha" stage.

I am too constantly enjoying the immense beauty and all the detail. Last week I was playing AC Rogue and it is staggering hoe much progress UBI has made in world building since then, and how powerful PCs have become. When I see all these assets in the game... I am sometimes wondering how it is even possible to create all that.

I bought an artbook of AC Odyssey and beside being full of incredible artwork and design, they talk extensively about all the "footwork" they've done for the project. Every building, statue or artifact that survived to this day was photographed, measured by 3D scanning tools and modelled to the last detail. Details that were lost to time physically but survive in literature were also put to the game with utmost care. And it goes on. Things that they weren't able to replicate or just gamey things they needed to create were also created with care. Real architects designed the building with style appropriate for the period.
As well as learning a lot about the game's development, I also learned a lot about the real history, from that artbook. Did you know, for example, that all ancient Greek statues were painted to look as real as possible? I didn't. :)
After reading the book, I enjoyed the game even more.

Sadly I haven't played Origins, because I dislike Egypt. Probably some sort of overexposure at younger age, but that setting is not appealing to me. But I can imagine it's the same deal and an awesome experience for people loving that place and era.
