What other games are we all playing?

I think it's Dual Universe being referenced.
@Hank Oh gottcha.

I'm unsure. But some speculation about it is by this super fan vid here.

Based on his narrative, future seems uncertain. Seems like production on it slowed considerably to to management takeover/radical project team changes. Or rather the key project director was permanently reassigned off the project.

So hopefully this change doesn't end up being the glum satire like what was expressed in Project:Jericho's post (sort by top comments to see his post at the top). Becuase if that's really going to suck if this is really the case. We all know what happens when investors (especially Venture Capitalist types) assume publisher overisight of a game franchise. And then decide to self promote themselves as "devs" to make the next best industry record breaking MMO evar.

A. s sh@tVision and Exceptional As$h@ts are the paradigms of this with likes of rectal cancer that Dice/BF5 and Bioware/Anthem turned out to be.

That being said, I'm really happy HG made this definitive overhaul of NMS game mechanic. But after being incinerated so badly so many times (with likes of CP2077, Odysessy etc which were supposed to revolutionize their game sectors) I'm remaining cautiously optimistic. But on the more hopeful end as HG has consistently delivered since launch. Plus it's HG's 17th major FREE dlc for the game. HUGE kudos to them again for doing this. Keen Devs and Frontier ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS??

Even though the update dropped 2 days ago, still waiting on YT and other social media feedback before venturing out to d/l that whopping WHOOP A $ S 7GB patch on Steam. o_O

No matter how much i try - i cant stand NMS' gfx and the fake-ish worlds.
Looks like freaking Spore

🤷‍♂️
Agreed. I wouldn't say no to a realism reskin. If NMS could get 50% close to ED's graphics--heck 90% of Space Engineer's graphics -- I'd be in hog's heaven. Perhaps this could be achieved using an ENB series overhaul (at least for PC players the way this was done for Skyrim). Not sure what would need to be done on console end though. Oh and add a human species to the existing humanoid models in the game if possible. I've got a peculiar fetish for playing exclusively humans in all my space/fantasty & action RPG games

But for me the tradeoff to the cartoony color scheme is the quality and depth of sand box gameplay. This update puts NMS on par with the addictive sandbox in Space Engineers. And both Skyrim and Fallout because of the world/base/home building aspect just got infinitely extended with this patch.

So IMO with this update, NMS has finally approached what single player Fallout 4 + The Outer Worlds would be in space. I'd even go as far to say it might rival Bugthesda's upcoming Starfield next year. Although jury's still out on whether Bugthesda can pull off a successful Fallout 4/Outer Worlds 3 in space.

There are mods that can remedy that of course. Not sure which are the current ones, but there was a really nice mod a while back, can't remember off the top of my head, what it was called. But it changed the game fairly drastically. Black space more errie sci-fi planets, colours, ships etc.
It didn't go the ED route with planets because its sci-fi, which is a good thing, Fdev could learn from.

Edit: DU is a mess of a game. Well, lets say early access, that won't reach full release as intended, may do watered down, but they have a mountain to climb to do even that. (just imo)

The mods are in a state of flux at the moment, as they are after every major update. Give it a week or two. Everyone is waiting for the MBINCompiler thing to be updated with all the changes, which doesn't usually happen until HG have finished bug fixing. And the NMS Save Editor may be dead for good... who knows.

There is a Redmas overhaul though that looks quite good (from the screenshots anyway), but I've not tried it. I don't mind the Heinlein scifi look. 🤷‍♀️

Agreed. It sounded good on paper, then it was exclusively multiplayer and had a subscription, so that killed any interest for me stone dead.

sci-fi?

it's pure candy-saga fantasy

Nope, it's stylised sci fi - based on the covers of books like Robert Heinlein from the 70s and earlier.

Yeah, it's very influenced by a bygone era, one that, I as a young lad, I loved. Growing up during the 60's/70's I couldn't be off but love that style. It's why I got into the game.
However that said, the planets were better in the earlier versions of NMS, for me anyway.

Loving Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Ridiculously crunchy implementation of the rules with builds for days! Scratches my CRPG itch good.

I'd say it's more likely based on Spore, but meh... not touching NMS, so this is a moot point anyway.
You're wrong about NMS. I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, but I do want to "set the record straight" for those who might be interested in NMS but are then put off because of misinformation like this. That happened with me regarding X4 Foundations - I avoided it for a long time based on a ton of misinformation being posted in this forum (mostly by people defending ED by trashing other games that compete with it).

I'm not defending ED.
I just dont like NMS. Pretty much like i never liked WoW 🤷‍♂️

I'd probably buy NMS at this point (even though the art is also not my cup of tea either), but I dipped my toe into DCS and it sucked me right in.
I don't know why I like to punish myself with this complexity and steep learning curve, but it makes it so alive - tried the F-14 this weekend and it's flight model is probably the most complex I've ever experienced (I will choose another starter plane). So yeah, having fun with it.

Apart that I'm doing the XCOM2 Legacy missions plus play Warships, though I might take a break from it soon.

NMS is better than I expected. It is basically a very neat exploration game offering a truckload of varied activities that are more or less simple but work flawlessly. Focus is on planets - not space and the procgen is very good - but don't expect infinite and always different variations. It's very good entertainment with unique artstyle.

Tomcat as starter plane? It is a very stable bomber platform though. I can recommend Harrier, much easier to land... The Kamov helo is quite impeccable, too - no tail rotor to worry about and flies smoothly. No IR targetting though, that is up to the AH64 coming up.
