What other games are we all playing?

I would say that the AC series are hit and miss, what I really like is Black Flag and now Valhalla, Origin and Odyssey is ok but I would not pay full price for them.

My PC is quite good enough to play online poker for Monopoly Money (FTP).

Able to play tournaments, without the cigarette smoke and $7.71 hot dogs.

The problem I have with this game at first glance is it feels a bit too arcade-like for my tastes. Not that it wouldn't be fun to play, but as a different game than my top space sims rather than a complementary game. I enjoyed the original Rebel Galaxy as such a game, which is definitely is not an "Elite-killer".
Oh, it's definitely on the arcade side of things. Hence, more of a challenge to Starfield.

Elite is it's own competition, with Legacy. :)

A shame, yes, but does it deserve to recover? How many of the issues behind the bad reviews of 2 years ago have actually been fixed?

The thing that sours me with Odyssey is the same problem that sours me on the rest of the game: longstanding bugs and other issues that are only addressed at a snail's pace, with features that are left fallow after years of community feedback. Elite is treated like a part-time project by Frontier. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that any content we get for the game is done by fans inside the studio who volunteer their time out of love for the franchise. It certainly isn't being developed in a professional way. It's no longer just Hello Games that puts Frontier to shame, it is now other studios like Egosoft. Speaking of:

Every time I don't buy X4 when it is on sale, I kick myself.

It's on sale.

The game with the user-hostile UI keeps taunting me. So many have said it's close to Elite in gameplay. The negative reviews on Steam confirm the klunky interface.

Arrrrrgh!

Don't hesitate. The UI is unwieldy at times, but I don't find it as terrible as some say. Bear in mind, this is the opinion of someone who only has ~35 hours in the game, but I have yet to find the UI anything more than a nuisance at times - you will need to google stuff from time to time.

More to the point: Update 6.0 is shaping up to be a Hello Games/NMS-styled gamechanger. I tried X4 back during the 3.0 days and shelved the game out of frustration with bugs and bad mission design. But after playing with the 6.0 beta, I am now thoroughly hooked, so much so that I don't think I'll be returning to Elite any time soon. X4 now feels really, really good because of all the polishing. Heck, Egosoft even managed to boost the framerate (my 3060 averaged 35-40 fps for 5.0, with the 6.0 improvements, I am getting near-steady 60 FPS with the game looking better due to the new lighting system).

As for what I've been playing outside of Elite:

1) NMS
2)X4
3) WARNO
4) DayZ

WARNO is shaping up to be a great Cold-War-Gone-Hot wargame. Eugen has been using the early access period to great effect. I wasn't too crazy about it last year, but this year Eugen has overhauled the combat mechanics, making the game far more entertaining. Now I am getting eager for the full release. I got started with computer gaming by cutting my teeth on 1980s wargames like SSI's Reforger '88 and Microprose's NATO Commander (by Sid Meier!) so I will always have a soft spot for similar games.

DayZ wa a surprise as I didn't think I would like it. But it is proving to be an engrossing survival type of game. I am glad to hear that BI is working on overhauling the lackluster zombies to make them more challenging. If they do that, DayZ could be a real time-sink for me.

Do you feel Warno will surpass or be inferior to Red Dragon or do they each carve their own seperate niche?

I believe it will be superior. Red Dragon (and my favorite, ALB) were fun games, but they were more on the side of typical RTS clickfests. With WARNO, Eugen seems to be going in a more tactical direction. Battles are slower with the chance for units to withdraw or rout rather than be outright destroyed. Combat calculations are a bit more in-depth as well, as this screenshot shows:

Keep in mind that I am speaking from the PoV of someone who almost exclusively plays skirmish against the AI and the solo campaigns. Speaking of, the new Army General campaign, which builds up what Eugen did with their WWII RTS, seems like it is going to be a HUGE improvement over the rather barebones campaigns in the Wargame series:

All things considered, I think WARNO will be a superior game to the Wargame franchise. Keep in mind that it is still in early access so anything can happen, but I think Eugen is on the right path here. It is also a darn gorgeous game. I love to go back and watch a replay. It is like watching Team Yankee: The Movie.

That's a screenshot from my skirmish game against the AI where my M48A2GA2s stopped an East German push through some town. The buildings didn't look like that when the battle started. 😮

Thanks, appreciate that write up. I also tend to enjoy more co-op comp stomp as the amount of micro some are capable of is a level I am just not able to reach.

When it first came out I had kind written it off but I like what I'm hearing so Ill keep an eye on it.

Does Warno feature the LoS-Toól they introduced with Steel Division 2? That was a thing lacking in Red Dragon.

One thing nice about WARNO is the addition of some tools to reduce micro. For example, you can set artillery units to fire at will, or just use counter-battery fire. It's nice not to have to call in each target. Also, aircraft can be set to auto-strike as well. Lastly, ground units have a "defend" and "seize" mode where they will auto-defend or auto-attack an objective (right now I find both these options to need more work as I've seen my units do some crazy stuff when set to one of the two). Eugen is trying to reduce the micro, which is nice!

Yes! They recently released a second, clearer version:

OK. I bought the durn thing.

It's too late to try it out tonight. My brain is too fried to play anything but poker for play money.

I re-read all the negative reviews. Well, I bought it on sale. Do I have to be a lizard guy?
Huzzah! One of us! One of us!

As for being a lizard guy...er...here's a joke:

An astronaut and a lizard walk into a bar. The bartender looks at them and says, "What is this, some kind of joke?"

The astronaut replies, "Actually, it is. We're both aliens from another planet."

The lizard chimes in, "And we heard this is the best spot in the galaxy for a cold beer."

The bartender laughs and says, "Well, you've come to the right place. What can I get for you two?"

The astronaut says, "I'll have a moonshine, please."

The lizard says, "I'll have a fly on the rocks."

This joke brought to you by ChatGPT. :D

I found that disturbingly more amusing than I should have 🤭

LOL, I've never been the lizard guy. I didn't even know that was an option! I've only played as Argon or Terran, which are both human.

I recommend spending a little time setting up the various keyboard and controller / HOTAS binds to match something you're familiar with (like Elite). On that note, I personally don't map the "boost" function in X4 but rather the travel drive, which I feel is superior to boost.

If you encounter any annoyances, let me know, because there's usually a work-around for them. I've been playing X4 for awhile now, and I'm still coming up with QoL fixes for the annoying bits of the UI.

I do recommend staying away from the X4 Beta right now, at least if you're new to X4. It started off pretty stable, but the latest updates have turned it into a bugfest...

I guess this is the notorious bugginess everyone talks about when talking about Egosoft. I was lucky to miss it first time around (I started playing X4 well after it first launched). I can see why early players of the game were annoyed!
