Distant Worlds II Event What Ship are you Bringing and Why?

I've decided at the last moment I'm taking my Corvette. For no other reason than it being my favorite ship and I'm just so sick of the Anaconda

I'll singly handily blow up all the NPC's trying to ruin the CG's

Welcome to the club. :)

I'm going with Corvette also. With mining outfit my range is approx 37ly and with exploration outfit approx 43ly.

Nice to meet someone else who likes that bright yellow paint.

Yellow and Orange are popular with Fuel Rats too :) It makes you stand out, so clients/other rats are less likely to ram you, and gives a sort of AA/emergency vibe.

Still hoping one day to get "Rescue 1" style paint jobs...

I'll be bringing a Corvette that can jump farther as a miner than as an explorer. [haha]

After not playing ED for most of the year due to IRL stuff getting in the way, I just today noticed a news article about DW2 and realized I might want to use this as a way to dive back into the game. The problem is, there is now zero time to prepare! Because of that, the ship i'm thinking about using is my Diamondback Explorer, almost exclusively utilizing the components I already have installed from early 2018.

I know it's embarrassingly under-engineered for this trip, but it seems like a jump range of 46ly will be sufficient? I'm also well aware of the stupidity of including 4A thrusters and shield generator, but I don't really want to under-size and low-rate everything, since it makes the ship a lot less fun to fly. Plus without a fighter bay, the idea of having a bit of shielding on my actual ship when I'm using it to glide through canyons seems like a very wise idea...

My big question to the assembled experts is what I should do with my last bit of internal space. I could just add in an MRP or AFMU, but I wonder if there are better options?

I went on a Fuel Rats rescue from Colonia in a partly engineered DBX with a jump range of about 35 LYs and it was fine! Takes a bit of time to scoop fuel but a couple of circuits of a star was usually enough. I didn't use neutron stars at the time, despite my FR partner (Highwaywarrior) at the time constantly trying to persuade me to try them, but still managed to make the 19 KLY trip to the stranded commander. Now I have finally started using neutrons my only concern would be the damage they do to the FSD, so I would highly recommend taking an AFMU in your spare slot if you plan on using them; otherwise for normal jumping it may not be necessary. Good luck! :)

I think I've more or less settled on my ship setup for DW2, following advice earlier in this thread.

OK, finally found how to use Coriolis which was much easier than I thought with EDMC. :)

I used this setup for another expedition to The Formadine Rift with the Hutton Truckers and didn't appear to have any problems but if I need to make any changes I'll have to do them in the next few days! I don't have any Guardian upgrades and not really any spare space to fit any. :)

[EDIT] - slight change of colour scheme and erm.... decals.....[/EDIT] :D
[EDIT2] - changed my mind on colour scheme again.... and added ship nameplate[/EDIT2] ;)

I wanted to bring the Clipper or my Naboo Courier but it doesn't look like I will make enough Cr in time to outfit the Clipper properly and the Courier suffers from alot of issues without engineering first. Might just go in the Asp Explorer and trade basking for efficiency and dull logic. Next to the big ships Asp is probably the best way to go anyway.

As is always the way, in the intervening days I've completely changed my mind, and now I'm thinking about taking my Python instead... Its tiny jump range isn't ideal, but it has enough internal room for me to configure it for some light mining for the first stage of the trip, and then switch to that first build from there on out.
I'm still indecisive though, and need help answering the following four questions:
  1. Is a measly 0.6ly of extra jump range worth the trouble of tracking down a 6A power plant to under-size it at this late stage, or should I just not bother and be happy with 39.4ly?
  2. Is the Python taking the easy way out? Would doing DW2 in a Diamondback give me a greater sense of pride and accomplishment?
  3. For that matter, would the Diamondback (50ly jump range) make the journey much less irritating than the Python (39ly jump range) by saving me a ton of time? Or maybe it would make it more boring, since I wouldn't see much along the way?
  4. Or should I just bin both ships and instead dash around trying to build a Mazda Miata capable of driving around the world?

Haha, yeah I'd love to see you do it in a Mazda Miata. :D Personally I'm not sure if .6 LY is worth down-sizing to a 6A power plant and 39.4 LYs is fairly good. I'd have probably still used a DBX if I didn't need a bigger ship for all the Fuel Rat equipment and extra fuel tank I'm taking, especially now I've conquered the neutron stars. It was the long jump range that attracted me to the DBX in the first place. Of course, just because you have a bigger jump range doesn't mean you have to use it all the time - nothing stopping you from making smaller jumps if you want to explore more, and you can get a long way using economical jumping if you want too.

As for mining, yes of course a bigger ship would be able to do more, but you could always be a Sapper and do clean-up of the asteroids in a DBX I think. Check out the CG thread for the mining roles. :)

Well.... at first I was going to take my Anaconda since it can pack a lot of stuff. But then I decided to change to my Asp Explorer. I mean this is an exploration trip. The Asp has a much better cockpit view and is a lot more maneuverable in super cruise.

That sir Dragonhead is an unapologetic long jumper :)

I also have an anaconda that I am thinking of taking. Jumps around 5 ly less than yours though, but more my style of a ship.

LOL! I may have to change my name!
I have toyed with sacrificing the jump a little to get back the boost ability, but have decided that on long journeys I like it.
That is quite the beast you have there yourself

Got my Anaconda finally upgraded as much as I can with the time left. At this point I'm blocked by not being an Empire Squire, not having access Sirius and not wanting to go to Colonia to meet Etienne Dorn. I was able to get the exploration version of the Narwhal just over the 70ly mark (unladen, not max!). Some of my exceptions this time are Reinforced Alloys (so damn expensive for an Anaconda!), Fighter Hanger and a 6G SRV Hanger. I only went reinforced alloys because I was able to engineer the weight down nicely, so now I'll hopefully a bit safer from some of those little bumps. The Fighter is my one offensive measure and something to change up the game play over the many months and the extra SRVs are just for insurance. I'm also taking the mining equipment for backup material gathering/gameplay change up. I don't anticipate using it much though. I'm also super lazy and hate space cargo scooping, so the collector is coming too, lol. I'll create limpets as needed to keep weight down.

I probably could have shaved off a tiny bit more weight with slightly lighter core modules, but when you do the math, we're talking about saving 1-2 jumps per week over the whole trip. 70ly unladen was my goal and I just got there! I also flirted with a smaller gas tank, but the savings was so minimal and the downsides could make looong jumps tricky.

Here's my build on Coriolis: https://s.orbis.zone/1ubk

Anyone else using any somewhat more extreme measures like smaller fuel tanks?

Nope, I'm taking two! So don't worry if having a small tank means you run out of fuel - I'll be prepared. :D

When I first signed up I had thought I'd bring my Anaconda, the Andromeda, with a long-range exploration outfit, Coriolis build here. However, since I'm unsure I'll be staying on for the entire trip and since I haven't been able to engineer everything for the Andromeda I've decided to use my dedicated explorer Krait Phantom, the Daedalus. It doesn't have as much endurance or range as the Anaconda would namely because of the lack of a second AFMU and only 2 SRVs instead of 4, but it's still more than capable of long-range exploration especially if I play it safe. Its build seems to be pretty typical for Phantoms, Coriolis link.
