Distant Worlds II Event What Ship are you Bringing and Why?

Currently signed up with a CM3 with a 50LY jump range. However, i've got a CM4 with a 45LY range which i'm also considering.

However, lots of time left yet and i might just break and go for something with an insane jump range or something completely different.

I don't want to be just another Anaconda/Asp/DBX though.

I suppose the main factor will be whether Fleet Carriers will be able to come along and what services they offer as that might massively change what we need to take. I mean, my CM3 only has 1 SRV, so if that is lost, then bye bye SRV for the rest of the expedition. If I know there will be a Fleet Carrier where i can restock my SRVs within a few hundred or thousand LYs though, no problemo. Of course, FD could always make SRVs like SLFs and allow us to make more, or perhaps add a synthesis type option to craft more.

However, for the moment, this is my main explorer (name is actually Wish You Were Here):

You know you want to bring your FGS. ;)

PS - Dang you have a LOT of Cobras lol.

The struts with the lights on the Krait cockpit have been driving me nuts. They're right in line with the top of the heading tape.

That's exactly the thing that might drive me back into my Asp. Those lights shining right in my eyes the whole time. The Asp Explorer also has ill-thought-out lights shining at the pilot, but at least those are way on the sides. With the Krait, you're always staring at them. And they're always staring back. Staring. Always staring...

Lights, and struts......

AND the red dash lights that make it difficult to scoop any cargo cos you cnat see the camera display!

don’t FD have test pilots to catch any silly design problems like this?

the shiny cockpit in the Imp Clipper reflects so much light the instruments cant be read at some angles from a star.

grumble, grumble, bah humbug

(grumpy old man before breakfast coffee kicks in!)

Thinking about it, I may end up going in an AspX after all. I love my Dolphin, and it will be fantastic for my general exploring use. Same with the Krait I mentioned if I end up with that much money.

However, I do have a limited schedule (sometimes very limited), so if I'm going to keep up (or catch up if I fall behind) and still have time to actually explore and participate, I'm going to need every light year of jump range I can get my hands on. Which means I'll probably need to start working on engineering and getting the Guardian booster ASAP.

A little disappointing, as it is so overdone, but if it let me take part... :)

I prefer not to be blinded. It's annoying around the bubble but can be deadly out in the black. Other stuff can generally be prevented by loadout and/or engineering.

And for those who think that doesn't happen anymore, wrong! It happened to quite a few of us on Dr. Kaii's mystery adventure the other day and resulted in a casualty. I narrowly escaped a close trinary just before the first neutron jump.

Perhaps if the Krait owners all raised bug reports FD will improve the cockpit layout before the expedition starts. Cant be too much of a job to tone down & rearrange the lights; or put duct tape over them...

That's an idea. Hopefully they'll listen.

I think Sandro is sympathetic to getting such obvious design hiccups sorted. Don’t know if he reads pms, but perhaps a concerted commenting effort on his next livestream?

getting to like my Krait (apart from aforesaid ligting errors) but finding its almost a bit too nimble when scooping engineering materials & haven’t gone to Palin yet to get the thrusters done. Might have to start scooping with Landing gear down!

Anyone want fighter escort on PS4?

I have'nt yet been out in the black alone. (definatly not stable enough for that lol)

But i'm down for some sort of community event doing the same, is there a minimum jump requirement at all?

I was gonna bring the Viper4, can get 30ly and some with full hulltank and weapons.

Send those griefers back to the bubble with the cool style of the Viper 4 lool.

So, Dirty or Clean Drives for a Krait?
currently PvE but eventually possibly for DW2
At Palin but only got 3 Selenium for DD tuning. Could do 300,000ls to go search for some Se, or could just go Clean from the outset.

And is this really how engineering works now? Every time you have a new module you have to go through all the levels from 1 to whatever to upgrade it, even if you’ve already done the same upgrade on another similar module? This seems worse than the old way.

Yeah, the Krait handles Dirty beautifully. Clean would be fine, of course, but really only needed if you want to be super stealthy.

Yes, you do have to upgrade it through all of the levels, but if you have the engineer up to level 5, then those first few levels only take single rolls to complete, and those materials are cheap. The number of rolls for the first 4 grades will often go something like this: 1,1,2,3.

Another thing to consider when you're engineering thrusters only for exploration: the components for clean mods are "cheaper" than they are for the dirty ones.
Personally, I roll A-rated thrusters with dirty drives because I use them for combat as well, while D-rated thrusters would go clean.

Oh yeah, and if you have "legacy" mods from before the big Engineering change, you can convert those to the new system, and they'll end up as one grade lower than what you had. So the max G5 becomes G4.

Too late. Got Palin to give me a 5* dirty drive tune on my krait’s 6D thrusters. But need a couple of Cracked Industrial Firmware to finish it off, then I can get a Drag Drive wax polish on it. Got some Hybrid Capacitors for the latter at Dav’s Hope, but where can I get CIF from?

That's basically what I did, except I have Stripped Down instead of Drag Drives. For the CIFs, you can hit the datapoint at Dav's Hope over and over again, and trade-up to get the CIFs if it doesn't drop any. You can also look for some missions to offer it as a reward.

Alternatively, you can run through settlements with your SRV, and get better grade data drops. Even if it's not CIF, you should get enough to trade for it.

Ah thanks, not got to grips yet with these new traders!
