What sort of Performance should I be aiming for with a Quest 3?

With the kind help of DeckerSolo I now have ED working on my PC with the Quest 3, but without Steam VR, which seems to have given me a bit of a performance boost.

But, what sort of performance should I be looking to attain? Best case scenario...

My system is a 13600k, with a 4070Super, 64gb DDR4, win 11 on an NVMe drive, and ED (standalone bought from FD Store) on a separate MVMe drive.

I am using a Quest 3, which I connect to my PC via wifi and the app, Virtual Desktop.

I have launched from ED Profiler, using various different VR presets, but it's been so long since I got into this game (and then I was using an Oculus SDK), that I am not sure what sort of performance I should be expecting. So if anyone has any tips on how they are setting their Virtual Desktop and ED, I will listen carefully

Also, are the scenarios a good place to test the FPS, or should I really be looking to jump into the main universe?

So, some experimenting and this looks okay, some frame drops in station, but seems fairly stable outside the station. Anything I should change?

As you are discovering there are infinate game settings to mess around with, big ones for me would be:
HMD Image Quality (I use 1.00)
Upscaling Quality (I use Normal, finding the image better quality)
Shadow Quality

Have you/are you:
Enabled the XMP profile for your RAM in your PC BIOS this is free performance from your PC if not
Enabled any CPU performance enhancing setting in your BIOS (I use AMD CPU's so can be specific to what is available for an Intel CPU)
Using MSI Afterburner to tweek your GPU performance

I can't power up my game at the moment but from memory using a 4090 and my Q3 I can maintain on average 70/90 fps in game, but with all the game settings at Ultra/High.

I am using ED Profiler to create copies of a VR Profile, as a fall back, and then bumping up the settings to see where it breaks. I will report back when I have something that gives me cool graphics without being a stuttery mess.

I seem to be moving in the right direction, with a stable-ish 70-ish fps in space, and a 50-ish in a station. Not that worried about low frame rates in stations as I guess I won't be there for long enough for it to become an issue.

One thing though, not sure I am misremembering, but I could have sworn the cabin of the starter ship was a bit brighter. Am I imagining this, or did FD change something?

Don’t forget to enable SnapDragon Super Resolution in Virtual Desktop’s settings - it gives a nice increase in clarity for basically free.

I use a Q3 with a RTX 4070ti, 72fps, most settings High/Ultra.

If you’ve got dark graphics (I did at first) check the enhanced colour depth and colour range settings in VD - they darken things considerably.

Another option for more performance is a recent addition to Virtual Desktop. On the Virtual Desktop Streamer app on your PC, go to the Advanced tab. You'll see 2 sliders for FOV Tangent. This reduces the overall pixels that are rendered at the edge of your vision. I can reduce my Horizontal FOV to 88% and my Vertical FOV to 84% before I begin to notice dark edges at the peripheral of my vision. Basically reduce the sliders 1 at a time and see if you can see dark/square edges. I'd reduce in increments of 5 till you see it, then start raising it again in 1's till you can't.

Mine is at 95% & 90% so I suppose my eyes bulge out a bit more

Cool, I will give this a go. I have done this in sim racing, and it works a treat, wasn't sure how ED would react to it so I reset it to 100%. I will give that a go tomorrow.

No they should be turned off, or at least the Increase Video Nominal Range should be off, it seriously messes up the colours

Wot VR Mn3m3nth said above - I also knock off the colour vibrance because to my eyes it makes things a bit darker, possibly due to all the cockpit holograms being extra vibrant.

This is the latest VR display experiment that I have sorted out. Seems to be okay, steady 72fps in space, drops to 50 or 60fps in a station.

Anyone have any suggestions for tweaks I could look at? Quest 3, connected via Virtual Desktop, set to Ultra. Using a 4070Super/13600k combo.

I have to ask: Don't you guys get massive issues with tearing and stuttering when the framerate is in-between dividers of the headset's refresh rate? It's unbearable for me - if I don't get (in my case) either stable 90 or 45 fps, the image stutters and tears, and I get a headache within a few minutes.
