What to do about Griefers

FDev made the first steps towards this with the Sept release update that helped n00b Cmndrs. The result was a significant boost of ED's player base on a PC forum like Steam's Top 100 popular games.

ED always has an influx of returning players during times of updates/patches , any correlation to this being directly the result of "helping n00b Cmnders" is a purely speculative opinion. How many of these were genuine new players? There is no answer anyone outside of FD can give.

Factoring these (very diverse) game genres:

Space themed games:
  • Galactic Civilizations
  • Sins of Solar Empire
  • Early release space games like Evochron, Empyrion Galactic, Avorion, Executive Assault, Between the Stars, Asterox Imperium
  • Planet Nomads
  • SW KOTOR
  • Space Engineers
  • NMS
  • Everspace
  • Stellaris (and other non space strategy build games like Civ)
  • X3 Reunion/X4 Foundations
  • Starpoint Gemeni 3
  • Upcoming space themed RPG games like RGO & The Outer Worlds
Non space themed titles like
  • TES/Arena/Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim
  • Fallout 1 - 4, Fallout NV
  • KCD
  • Dragon Age
  • Fallout 76
  • The Sims
  • RDR and RDR Online
  • GTA VC, GTA III, GTA SA, GTA IV, GTA V & GTAO
  • Farming Simulator 19
  • SimCity, Cities Skylines
  • Subnautica
I'd guess easily ~ 350 to 400 or so consistent friends I communicate with frequently in game and on external 3rd party channels like Discord and email. Randoms increase that number considerably from interaction in game and game forums like this. But from the larger, strategic fan base perspective, that number could easily surpass 1,000 PvE minded players. ED as a space sim just needs to have depth, clear progression for pilot development, and immersion in character lore, NPC development to attract the PvE minded player. FDev made the first steps towards this with the Sept release update that helped n00b Cmndrs. The result was a significant boost of ED's player base on a PC forum like Steam's Top 100 popular games.

Because unlike most PvP gamers, PvE gamers don't rely on other players for their emergent game play content. They're perfectly comfortable creating their own i.e. via main story/quest lines like RPGing a faction like in ED's PP ones. Or doing creative sandbox to develop their character and/or RPGing within the framework of game lore. Or combination of all three. Their primary focus is on the game world environment and how they can interact with it. Either with other players in a collaborative sense or solo. The true number of these PvE gamers is significant higher than is assumed in the industry IMO.

What's preventing your friends playing in solo or PG?

Why should open change?

The only type of ganking worse than that is killing a Fuel Rat. That should NEVER be allowed and should result in an immediate permaban
Sorry, Fuel Rats, noble as they may be, are fair game in Open play. I would never kill one, but I’m sure someone can come up with an in-game reason to do so. And they have, I’m sure. Not that they need one because killing someone in Open for any reason is allowed, regardless of intent.

And FDev didn’t create the Fuel Rats, the community did. Surely you aren’t suggesting that FDev god hand special protection for one emergently created player group over another?

I mean, your comment starts out saying basically “if you click Open them’s the breaks” but then basically cut any non-consensual PvP off at the knees with outrageously draconian consequences like charging the attacker full rebuys for their murders or permabans from the game. Pick a side already.

Fdev dont ban people on this game unless they do something that the whole community saw such as the beluga pilot who was invincible to prove a point to fdev.

Ah, i see. So you are not aware of the people who got bans for using cheats, including the guy who lost around 10 accounts due to cheating?

I never once said Open should change. Here's a cut and paste from my original post #384

I have a lot of PC platform only friends (here in US and in EU) who camp out daily on sites like Steam/GOG. Playing a variety of different gaming genres the likes of creative non space themed sandbox/RPG games the likes of Minecraft, The Sims, Gary's Mod. RPG fantasy and driving/transportation sims the likes of TES, Fallout, RDR2, ETS 2 and Forza. Economic/city building based sims the likes of Civilization and Farming Simulator 19. City building strategic sims the likes of SimCity/Skylines. And space sims the likes of Space Engineer/NMS/X4 and yes even outdated Empyrion Galactic die hards.

Despite the vast differences in the games they chose to play, all these friends share a common characteristic, they're happiest when playing a game Solo, or in some form of a collaborative/competitive PvE multiplayer. If playing competitive PvE (like grinding to make the most money in GTAO/RDR2 Online, build the best city/complete espionage/build/crafting mission objectives in games like Civilization and Space Engineers) then 100% of all multiplayer interaction is by mutual consent using the rules set by the game environment features (i.e. players who RP criminals/pirates etc DO NOT attack or engage other players. Regardless of whether they're also RPing criminal roles or not. They only attack/hostile engage NPCs). If collaborative PvE, it's more by mutual support of players v. NPCs/world environment. Space Engineers and F76 are good examples of that.

The bottom line is there are many PvE gamers like me who have been unwillingly forced into multi player by online trends in the game industry. Just based on feedback and experiences from my online friends, virtually all of them prefer Solo (if they're introvert PvE lone wolf types) or some form of collaborative/competitive multiplayer (if more extrovert PvE types). They're also open to playing space themed games with good sandbox/RPG elements the likes of Obsidan's upcoming The Outer Worlds. And likes of CDPR's CP2077.

So if FDev were to make ED more attractive for PvE minded gamers like these, DB would need to improve ED's game play mechanics in addition to FCs. FDev would need to invest more dev time in creating stronger ED lore, detailed human and alien Thargoid NPCs with personality/character, an Obsidan/Bethesda depth of development in NPC PP characters, a stronger PP element to encourage emergent sandbox RPG game play etc). All of that on top of space legs and atmospheric planetary landings. Complete with a NMS style of RNG POIs randomly distributed on planets in systems. And if they could pull all of this off, then I suspect FDev would see a surge of interest in ED's PvE fan base. This latest n00b friendly update boosted ED back into the bottom third of Steam's 100 most popular games.

Because I have many friends who've admitted to an interest in playing ED in PG and/or Solo. But don't because ED still lacks fundamental, immersive features like space legs, station interiors, atmospheric landings etc. Which other space games the likes of NMS, Empyrion Galactic and X4 have to date. Or lacks player - world environment interaction. Global customization features which allows the player to personally affect and terraform their environment to build personal structures/vehicles etc. by using crafting/building features. Much the way NMS, TES and Fallout currently permit. Or they're deep RPGers of Obsidian Fallout game play who find ED's sand box/PP & especially CG events fascinating. But insufficient, since its weak PP element makes game play as vast as the ocean and deep as a puddle. Especially since ED's BGS relies on PP which is on the weak end and doesn't encourage consistent RPG emergent game play. Once you've ranked up to Admiral of Fleet or Prince, the RPG element for PP becomes somewhat trivial.

TL DR all my online friends are PvE minded gamers who all play a variety of competitive/solo space and non space game genres. Some of them are old enough to have played Privateer in the past. But they all prefer to play in Solo and/or some form of multiplayer PvE mode. They're all hyped for CDPRs release of futuristic world CP2077, Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, and DDG's RGO (when these titles finally make it to Steam). And so wouldn't mind trying a futuristic new genre that 's a space game the likes of ED. Provided they can opt out of contending with the toxicity of griefers and PvP mindset gamers in general. So that's good news for ED given the Solo and PG mode options.

There. About 600% done with the thesis now :ROFLMAO:

One element of a fix for that might be to extend the length of the menu exit delay while instanced with a CMDR that one has shot at and hit, possibly increasing it for every shot that lands.
I have personally oft supported that idea... however the carrot there has to be it NOT waiting for you to click ok after the countdown. if the phone rings or the doorbell goes i do need to answer but at the same time i do not want to lose 20 milion credits and all my bounties plus my npc just because of a spam call which 80% of the time it is.]

so sure, give it an extra 10 seconds or what ever on the log out, but let me boost, go FA off and log out taking my chances but DO actually log me out after the countdown!.

PVP is NOT Griefing.

Griefing is using aspects of the game in unintended ways.

Period.
so ramming player deliberately in a manner such to exploit holes in the security and not set them off? I am not fully saying that is griefing but it definitely fits your definition above... and is iirc what the OP has issue with.
in open players should expect to be attacked potentially... however being attacked by players abusing holes in the games ai logic?

I am not sure sure.... indeed it was code players doing exactly that (along with irritating "chat" on the open comms) which made me leave open. 90 mins to hutton only to be rammed to death by ships whilst code players tied up the landing bays and getting laughed at for the privalage... No taa!. Not that I am afraid of it, indeed i quite liked the idea of some proper piracy, but that kind of thing is just tiresomme and offers no positives for me to allow players to be in my game.

another problem is the cheaters..... not all PvPers are cheaters.... not even the majority, but after seeing some of the more vocal "git gud" PvPers having their toys taken off them for cheating - and that is only the ones who were honest enough to admit they had been caught cheating... how many kept quiet? Sadly that has removed any faith i have in any of the PvPers. Hell even in CQC there are people who use hacks, and that is consequence free PvP.

The minority there sow seeds of doubt which marr the whole pvp community from my perspective. (and many others who even claim not to cheat will still defend those, and contine to play with those who do.

And how many loggers?

You mean people who pull the cable or task kill? No idea, not something i've ever seen any info on. My answer was in relation to your previous comment, which made no mention of loggers. You just made a blanket statement which is false based off public statements made by cheaters who lost accounts.

But for a large portion of the loggers and cheaters they do not get banned, yes its case by case but not enough is being done to tackle the issue.

oh i will call greifers and trolls scumbags, because thats exactly what they are. they only play to make people quit. instead of actual PVP where they rollplay (mostly).
They play to enjoy themselves like the rest of us, there will always be a losing side to a battle and not everyone on the losing side takes it well. People can rage quit cause they lost and these people play because they enjoy what they do and just because you see it as an unacceptable way to play the game doesn't make them a scumbag, they aren't committing a crime they are just enjoying the game.

actually, they play to make people behind the monitor screen and Holo Me Cmndr miserable. Ruining other player's online enjoyment is their emergent PvP game play experience, and how they get their kicks.

When they succeed in driving away other players into PG & Solo, they finally realize they've screwed the pooch. You see they finally realize they've run out of sufficient targets to gank.

That's when they slink away back to real life. Make numerous posts on here begging and/or encouraging PvE players to return to Open. Or bragging about how superior they are for being brave enough to play in Open. So other players should stop being cry babies and Get Gud. And post even more useless complaint petitions to FDev like restricting PP to Open. Or granting them bonus rewards like more Arx etc. given the extra risk they have to endure in Open....... :ROFLMAO:

they get their kicks by making everyone else miserable. actual PVP doesn't make someone a troll or greifer, what trolls and greifers do is not actual PVP. hovering above a port blowing people away before they have a chance to take off is trolling/greifing, ramming someone until they blow up as soon as they exit the mail slot is trolling greifing. resetting your account just to get into the newbie area just to blow the newbs away is trolling /greifing. how can anyone defend that behavior is beyond me, it make me think that they are trolls greifers themselves. crap like that slowly kills the game, it takes players to support the game to keep it running and continue its development. with the greifers and trolls running people away from the game how long do you think that'll last, plenty of games have died due to that.

for many people cheating is fun, just because you can doesn't mean you should.
