What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Folks,

What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous? Joystick? What brand? Just using a keyboard?

I have been using my XBox 360 controller connected to my PC for oolite. It works OK, but has some issues.

This is what I am currently using

Presumably the dual-stick controllers are microswitch based? I think I'd prefer to use a proportional joystick, but ideally a fairly small one to reduce desk clutter when not in use.

I'll play with what performs/feels best (as I've already got a good selection of sticks/controllers to try) but won't be making any hasty decisions until I've played :)

I would probably aim to start with the same as the devs, but no doubt feedback during alpha and beta will help make a decision for launch.

That might end up being the best choice. My 360 controller has a slight drifting issue. A controller like the one you have probably works well with Windows 7.

I've always used mouse & keyboard for most games, but I'm gonna check out a few joysticks and decide upon one before the Alpha tests starts.

My biggest problem with joysticks is that I get excited and they tend to tip over. Even ones I've used with suction cups on the bottom tend to come off the table top and become unusable.

You can bolt the more expensive ones to your desk if need be :)

You could always get those cheap little G-Clamps to do it if the device doesn't come with them itself. The thing that concerns me about the Saitek offering is that is a force measuring stick meaning that the stick doesn't move but is influenced by how hard you push on it. Having never tried one of these before I have no idea how hard you have to push to put the stick into any one corner. Presumably this force can be calibrated but I can see two possible problems from prolonged use:

1. Hand fatigue
2. Smashed monitors if it comes loose!

I've been using keyboard for oolite... but then half the time I cheat and slow down time during combat, so something better may be required for Elite Dangerous.

as long as I can redefine the keyboard for
6=Left
7=Right
8=Down
9=Up
0=Fire

Then I'm happy :)
(see if anybody else recognises those keys)

I think the manufacturers of pro joysticks and gaming mouses horrendously discriminate against us cak handed folks.

No fair on us lefties ;-)
