What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Minti2

Deadly, But very fluffy...
As I've mentioned a few times I WANT the x52 but can't (we're REALLY on a budget in this house now) so for my birthday I got an XBox controller. It didn't really work out well for me. Then my seven month old baby broke it and I went back to the keyboard.

So I'm on the keyboard.

Mate that sucks! not even a 360......still if your gonna be stuck using just the keyboard i would love to hear how you get on, i use to just use keyboard for the org Elite and loved it, but i think ED is a different monster, again be intrested to hear how you get on

Know you said you didnt get on with the 360(i found it really good but not as good as the x52pro of course)
but if you change mind and dont mind giving me your address i will give you my corded 360(new, only use a few times) free :)

Ha thanks! I'll get by though and sooner or later my broken 360 will magically 'repair' itself. Just don't tell the wife.

Seriously though, people on these forums are REALLY nice, last time I mentioned wanting an x52 some nice fella asked me for my address... (I'm scottish, so I was like 'no thanks pal' my wife is sicilian she was 'take it! take it!') But when I grouch I'm just grouching. It won't be the last time I bemoan my lack of the x52 (which in my head will make me the best fighter pilot ever. With FA off too!) but I know magical solutions to my fighter pilot ability don't exist.

I'm always amazed by the generosity of people around here.

There's always the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X at about £40.

I've got one of these. I can't compare to an X52 as I've never used one, but it's a solid and very usable bit of kit with a bunch of buttons and a nice feel. It was certainly a big step up from the 360 controller for me and at a very reasonable price. Recommended if you don't want to plunk £100+.

Finally got my x52 pro and it feels great, so I'll be using that.
Can't seem to figure out how to get joy31 working though.. light flashes when i press it but it doesn't actually respond in game.

So I've had a bit of hands-on time with my Logitech G13 keypad, and I'm not particularly happy with it, truth be told.

It works well enough; the software (as with all logitech's peripherals) is stellar.
The problems are, well, ergonomics. The keypad isn't actually all that handy - the 'hump' for your palm is too low, and a bit too close to the keys - so even in the supposed position, your fingers will be quite bent in the "rest" position (think as with a claw-grip mouse). The thumbstick is a particularly nasty thing, though - it's not in a good place, it doesn't seem to be 100% aligned as you'd expect (it seems slightly skewed anti-clockwise by about 10-15 degrees) and isn't exactly precise (afaik, 255 positional states per axis). The wasd keys have depressions so that you could locate them easier, but those depressions are rather faint. Worst of all, though, is the lack of a key row *above* the qwe... line - so where you'd usually have the number keys - which are fairly important in many games - here you need to rebind those somewhere else.

So, er, yeah. I'm not particularly impressed, it really just seems more like a small gaming-grade keyboard, and not a speciality device (like a mouse or a joystick). Maybe I should have gone with Razer's keypads, those at least look more non-keyboardy..

Edit: While I'm griping - I'm not sure if I like the t.16000m joystick - It works well, aye, but after just 20-30 minutes of play, basically my arm (wrist) starts to ache. Is that an adaptation thing, or am I stressing the joint too much? I've never had this stuff with a mouse (still don't), and I'm pretty sure I don't have an RSI or similar issue...

After reading through most of this thread and lots of reviews on youtube, I'm going to get an X52-Pro. Lots of good things have been written and I like the button controls. Perhaps FD can also make use of the interactive panel at some point?

And what better endorsement (unofficial of course!), than to see FD themselves using one as seen here :

re.

Hey guys,

Had a bit too much time on my hands today and pretty much read this entire thread!!! Reason being, I have been a kb/mouse user for a very, very long time but wanted to garner opinion on control methods.

The majority consensus in this thread seems to favour a Joystick + other combo for control in E: D, I'm more than happy to give a joystick a go, though my budget is £50 or less, but the biggest problem is I'm a leftie.

Have done some googling and love the idea of the various HOTAS with thrust setups but I'm far too long in the tooth to start using a stick with my right hand. There was some good comments regarding this :- Thrustmaster T16000M for a leftie but I just wanted to garner some opinion form my fellow lefties, (and some of you dirty righties :p), out there as to where I can and should hedge my bets in terms of a joystick compatible with my leftiness and inability to learn new tricks!

Thanks in advance,

Theo

I currently have the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. It works OK with Oolite, except for some drift when I'm trying to rest my hand (and adjusting dead-zone seems to have no effect at all).

Thinking of replacing it with Warthog or X52Pro, but not yet sure if it's really worth the expense.

Are you running the Logitech controller software? You can adjust the sensitivity and the deadzone with it.

I really liked the Force version of that stick, but sadly it's no longer manufactured. The T.16000 could be a good replacement in the same price range.

I thought I'd drop my experience of using a game pad in here just in case no one has commented, but I haven't read every post so I'm sorry if this is retreading old ground.

In the alpha I started using a. 360 pad with the wireless dongle. Overall it worked but it is very difficult to smoothly track a maneuovering target.... I haven't gotten to the bottom of the problem, it could be the pad sticks are too short and make the fine adjustments very difficult, it could be that ED offers no controller input scaling or it could just be the 360 pad design.

I tried using a PS4 controller instead (wired). This was better than the 360 pad for combat but it still takes very delicate control.

So using those 2 pads has been a frustrating experience with the ps4 pad being a better solution. In the past I have always had a good stick set up for flight sims but right now I'm joystick-less, but my guess is that even a basic joystick will perform better with this game simply because the longer stick will make fine control easier.

For now I'm sticking with a ps4 pad and gimballed lasers to reduce the combat frustration!

cyborg fly 5......... as its what i have. am considering something with a seperate throttle controller though, x52 pro maybe.

also have
panic-button_1405329i.jpg

i want to set it up as 'eject'

What is that button, and where did you get it? I want one! Not sure what for yet but it looks cool!!

In fact I could use it as a foot prestle for teamspeak?

Brian :)

I'm using an Xbox 360 controller right now but my wife has ordered an X52 for my birthday (not the pro one).

Can't wait.. I'm just trying to figure out how to safely fix the stick and throttle to my chair as my desk is too high and would cripple my arms after 10 mins play.

There's always the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X at about £40.

I had one of those, and I don't recommend it. There's nothing wrong with it functionally, it's fine. However, there's a cable connecting the stick to the throttle. And it's not long enough to cross a lap (so you can't even sit on it).
