What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

I order a pair of Razor Hydra, so I can steer and strafe at the same time. It's entirely possible I might regret it =)

I never really liked analog joystick, I'm more of a keyboard / mouse gamer. The hydra, besides being the best input device for OR / Oculus Rift so far, have the potential to combine the best of mouse (absolute pointing and precision) and joystick (relative movement). Each have 6 DOF, analog trigger, 6 digital buttons, analog stick. This video shows the different modes you can use it.

So what are the benefits of this controller over say a regular joystick. ie: What would I gain over my existing Thrustmaster T.Flight Stick X? :)

I've not used that one but... probably not a lot if you have a good profile set up for that stick. Seems to have plenty enough buttons, and a throttle.

The main thing about the x52 is "feel". It just feels nice when you fly using a separate whole hand for the throttle. Also there are multiple hat switches, which are great for looking around, accessing the menu system, etc quickly in the heat of things.

Horses for courses. Plenty people doing fine with keyboard and mouse it seems.

^^ I think the one thing the X52 does have, that cheaper sticker will not, is the means of doing an analog look around? Is that right? You have a little analog stick so you can look around to any degree/angle? That would be nice, and VERY useful! ie: for keep craft in your FOV which are not directly in front of you.

Yeah, there's a little analogue "stick" (it's more like a nipple on my x52 non-Pro) which is (by default) mapped to the mouse movements in the alpha.

That is surely a great feature to allow you to look easily around the cockpit, and to track craft not directly ahead?

I assume that's controlled by your left hand?

X52 issues if you've had any. REMINDER

For those peeps who have encountered issues installing the drivers for the x52 make sure you uninstall any USB 3 hub drivers via add remove programs. If you don't you may find the x52 driver install hangs and you'll notice that only the lcd display lights up and not all your throttle buttons.

I have a pair of these in the loft *grins*

Certainly looks interesting!

Don't need a USB3 hub to get this well known issue with the X52.
I have a shortcut to the Saitek Drivers and reinstall anytime this happens. Changing USB port is a common one and sometimes adding a new USB device.
This is the one and only gripe I have with Saitek, hopefully the new X55F Rhino stick will not have this problem as the stick and throttle have separate USB cables.

I'm likely going to play with a joystick and keyboard. I may get some foot pedals if I really, really get into the game, but that'll come later.

Well guys just got me a new Rig, and also X52 Pro, i may have trouble working out how to set up all the keys, so if anyone would like to share their set up or give me some tips, i am all ears.

Being the wrong side of 55 i am not that computer literate, so the plainer english, the JS set up the better, really looking forward to getting beta test pack, this game was immense in its first incarnation, & given time i reckon ED will surpass all our expectations.

Azzuri Out.

x55 is available for pre-order for the states and canada unfortunately not the eu yet :(

I did find the link to where it will be in the store linked to the siatek pages though for the uk.

x55 link

It currently is listed as 'out of stock' rather than pre-order though. Looks priced at £169.99

hoping they make available before 1st round beta, given the shortage of joysticks of late, I mean x52 and x65 have been unavailable for months until some places managed to get stock recently, wouldn't surprise me if this took at least another couple of months before the eu gets it :s.

Us saitek / madcats store has x55 shipping 3 April.

might have to make do with the warthog after all....she says looking for an excuse to buy and trying not to sound enthusiastic....lol

Had this issue and decided against this method (don't like to mess around with drivers). I disabled the USB 3.0 Support in BIOS instead (making them USB 2 only).
For the moment i disabled it entirely although my BIOS supports disabling it for single ports. Didn't have the patience to guess around to find the right one ;)

I'll be using my Microsoft Force Feedback 2... though it doesn't have enough buttons, and none of the Alpha 1.x builds had a set-up for a generic throttle stick with twist.

The classic joystick of champions. I purchased my Sidewinder FF2 from a gentleman in a charity store almost a decade ago for 99p. I hope it works OK on ED :)
