Elite / Frontier What would prevent *you* from buying E4?

If it were only available on Microsoft platforms.
ie XBOX360 / MS Windows based PC.

I would not buy it.

At the end of the day, you know this will be the case in all likelihood.

Why make a fuss?

If you haven't got a windows-capable computer or some way of emulating one, can you really expect to play major mainstream games?

Only one thing could stop me buying Elite 4.

And that is the following words spoken by a developer...

"Focusing the game to appeal to the widest audience possible in a industry that has changed alot in the last 4 years regarding what gamers want and enjoy."

Every title that I have played, that has followed that kind of mentality ends up just using it as a excuse to make the game generic, linear, single minded in focus in what the player can do and just generally have a play life of about 13 hours before you've exhausted every possible thing in the game and are left with no desire to play it again, all out of the development teams fear of not every single person loving the game.

Sad thing is, most of the time the direct result of 'focusing to appeal to the widest audience possible' is that noone ends up loving the game because they feel no attachment to it.

MMO/Multiplayer: I don't want this. Other players will A-L-W-A-Y-S find a way of ruining my game experience if it's MMO. e4 should stay single-player.

A short game: It appears that the latest fad is to make a game that can be completed in a few hours. I've waited 25 years for e4, so I think it's only fair that it takes another 25 years to "complete" it. ;)

FPS: I don't want a halo/mass effect clone where I have to run everywhere, this is not what elite is about. It's about flying, dog-fighting, trading & exploring the vast expanses of space, meeting interesting races (and sometimes killing them.. *smirk*). The only thing that should be added is the ability to land on cities/stations on the surface of planets as well as those in orbit/deep space.

Black space: If e4 uses all the colours of the rainbow for it's space, then I don't want it. The heavy use of colours should only be for planets & their atmospheres.

Generation Ships: There better be some in e4 for me to stumble upon, because I spent too much time looking for them in the original. Oh... and make them dockable for some extra trading oportunities.

Tribble homeworld: Needs to exist (...so I can drop a bombs on it for the stress they gave me last time)

Lots ships: for me to buy to steal/buy & fly, from small ships when I start out (a tugboat?) all the way up to massive planet destroying fleets.

Homeworlds/Hangars: To store my ships, and help build my company/business/empire/army etc

Working missions: *smirk* ;)

Don't think you will be seeing Tribbles as they are from Star Trek.now Trumbles on the other hand could form an epic mission especially if they can hide in the ship as furry dice.:D

from whats been posted on here before it seems about 99% of folks dont want a mmo. i agree, whislt its always nice to have a blast with your mates in a two player, (not that any of my mates have ever heard of elite/frontier, or that i even have any mates! :D) there seems to be an ever increasing community of people who play games online just to spoil someone elses enjoyment.

Completely agree! Ages ago DB said there would be 2 versions, single player and mmo. But that was back in the mists of time...
I'm not an xbox fan, but must admit to having enjoyed Halo as a 2-player. But mmo NO

Amen to that! Imagine an online game where you kept running into retards who want to do nothing but spoil the game. Also, I completely agree with you about short games - games still cost £20 - £30, yet the singleplayer experience is getting shorter as time passes! And yes, space is black by and large, so no X3 style rubbish in Elite IV please.

I have to say I disagree, provided they are seperate programs. Playing Elite in a huge galaxy with real people has been a dream of mine for a long, long time. Its the only game that would tempt me into the whole MMO thing.

As for people ruining your experience I can only point out that Elite/Frontier games come with a built-in police force who take a dim view of piracy in the safer systems...of course what happens on the fringes is another matter. ;)

Hehe, imagine being a bounty hunter, hunting down other players who have turned to piracy and murder and getting payed for doing so!

Just like the original games, high risk systems gave you the best rewards. :)

Well given the sandbox nature of the games I am sure E4 will offer that same open ended gameplay that will keep us plying the spacelanes for many a year :)

I partly agree, Elite shouldnt be an FPS, but I think your wrong about what a change in emphasis could bring the game. I believe David Braben has said that in the previous games you were just a ship, whilst in the new one you will be a person. So I think getting out of the ship to talk and meet people will be a big feature.

I think what he is saying is that personal interactions will be more at the core of what a new Elite will be about. Imagine building up relationships with other traders, organizations and characters and how that might influence the story and or mission choices in the game.

Kind of making it an RPG, in the sense that its your characters actions and relationships that define how the game will play out, as opposed to it being about Levels or Stats.

Having to be online to play or having an invasive protection system would stop me buying it as would bad online reviews, extremely lousy demo, lack of depth, linear gameplay, unrealistic spacetravel, lack of first person play, lack of cockpits in spaceships, lack of planet landings, high degree of boring repetition, etc. IE: there are a lot of games coming out these days that have many of these faults. I trust Elite 4 wont be one of them but still it needs mentioning. Developers today seem to be incapable of designing decent games with interesting gameplay. I dont know who the designers are but there are very few around with any talent. Braben has already proved he can do it but I am not sure how much he was involved with the gameplay as opposed to the mechanics of the previous games. That is my only real concern that without Ian Bell I dont know whether a true Elite sequel could be created.

I'd like to see a statement from DB confirming the game is ready for release!
Agree with above comments re too harsh DRM or lack of single-player focus.
Would also be nice if the game wasn't exclusive to high-end systems.

I will not be buying E4 if it is mot available on the PS3.

The facts for me are that I am no longer interested in owning a gaming PC because I got tired of having to spend money all the time to experience games at their highest settings, sure they look awesome on PC but I have stuff like a mortgage, car, food, bills etc to pay for so I cannot afford to keep a great PC rig maintained and upto date.

I also have no interest in a 360 or Wii because I already have a console, which is the PS3. I chose that console because I will not need to upgrade it and it had the blu-ray player built in so it was also for financial reasons.

So if E4 comes out for PC, 360 and PS3 I will buy it for PS3. But I cannot justify buying a PC or 360 just for E4, I know my laptop will not be able to run it but my laptop does what I expect from it. I know my PS3 can run E4 when it comes out as it is a great piece of gaming kit.

So that really is the only reason that would stop me getting it, also it would be free on PSN so I would expect the MMO aspect to be free on PC, 360 as well.

That's where my "I'm not even going near the game unless it's totally awesome" stance pays off - totally awesome games are few and far in-between, so there is no need for frequent upgrades.

I want to see a beta release before I'll decide whether I'm going to buy E4 or not. I'll certainly sign up for any beta testing the devs will be calling volunteers for. :)

I've played the game many times in my head. It's going to knock your socks off. :D

All they have to do is reboot the franchise, take all the ideas from the originals, and update them to current specs. Any additional fleshing out will be a bonus.

I'd love to be able to do more customization on the ships and crew. I'd love to have more detailed planets and places to explore. I'd love to take on more complicated missions that do not just involve flying from point A to point B and fighting pirates along the way. I'd love to go on salvaging/rescue missions on planets and asteroid fields. I'd love to run smuggling runs between warring factions. This is what epic stories are made of.

But until there is an actual release, this is just wishful thinking.

All things considered, there is nothing keeping me from buying this game, except if it doesn't get made.

It's easy enough to keep your PC up to date for very little cost.

I never spend more than about £100 a year on PC bits, and my rig has always been able to play any new game on high settings.

I had to think long and hard before posting on this thread. And after all that brain melting, I couldn't come up with a single reason that would stop me buying Elite IV.

If my PC was not up to the job of running it, I would buy it anyway and struggle until I could put a rig together that could do a decent job.

Looking back to the past, I did the exact same thing when Frontier came out on the Miggy. At the time I had (and still do) an A500+. The game was ok on it, but I really needed an A1200 to do it justice, which I later bought (and I still have that too; bit of a hoarder you see :D). In later (PC) years the benchmark game was Half Life 2 and so I upgraded my PC to run that.

Now some might think that I am being daft, and you might be right! But, I have seen people mentioning on this forum and others, how they would like to thank DB for making these wonderful games. Well people, I can't think of a better way to thank him than to buy Elite IV.

I have to admit though, that I would prefer a sandbox model rather than an MMO, but I would (as a certain sci-fi character has often said), adapt, if I had to.

I really liked deej's point about idiots spoiling the gaming experience if Elite IV becomes an MMO. I would hate that too. If it happened to me, all I can say is, hell hath no fury............;)

Well I upgrade a lot but not out of need but more out of graphical luxory.
I ám not a very demanding gamer.
But MMO is a nogo for me.
Mplay no problem with but I aint a online player.
SP and coop that me.

As far SP and coop. As long as it had lot of strong ploints and a few minor flows. And if the biggest is to overcome.

unless they blew it. There is alway's chance to that. So many pitfalls.
I rather wait another 2 years for a better finishes and feature compleet and polished game. Then next kwarter something rushed. But then that requiers a lot bigger funding. And that the problem for most non AAA titles.

Agreed - just don't jump on new tech as soon as it comes out because there's never anything around that needs it! One thing that might stop me buying Elite IV? Any kind of monthly fee. Once I've bought the game, that's it!
