What x-rebirth taught us about leaving the ship

I think if they did the "walking in stations" similar to the way it was done in Earth and Beyond it could be fun. X-Rebirth did not do a good job with it at all.

Whatever they do, I hope it's all optional - I'm not planning to ever leave my ship.

I'm simply not interested in that aspect of the game at all.

I'd hate being forced into an FPS mode to defend my freighter from a boarding party - might just as well restrict myself to only fly ships with a one-seated cockpit in that case.

X-Rebirth was poor all round though, not just the walking around bits. ED is already far better as a space sim and it's not even out of beta yet.

I think No Mans Sky is a good example of how seamless space and planets could look.

It will be. As an optional add-on they'll have to plan for people not owning it, so rest assured it will not be required.

Well it is now X-Rebirth 2.X
It still not finished but better then 1.0

You can trade from your ship.

3 added game starts.

I think it's more Egosoft want to do a very huge game vision but ignore the limited publisher back up not fitting there vision. And they didn't adopt to the funding and time they got.

it is not just like a dev team with out a producer. But also without anyone taking the role off producer responsibilities.

So it not just only that feature creep feature that done half way. But the whole game and every aspect is half.
There wasn't any room for the needed Q&A that fit's these complex games.

I would compare Albian Skunk with Normandie from Mass effect 3.

Which was very cool and X-Rebirth made me think of ME3 how cool that was. But not crucial to the game.
The only playable ship is so small. That the biggest disappointment.

So SC and ED have now the chance to do that right and with many playable ships.

And in X-Rebirth the whole plot is optional we have a free roaming game Start. And the Campaign start.

Yes, optional only. Because it will be an immersion breaker for many of us. After all, I can buy and sell everything I want from my iPad: shares, computer bits, food, cars, I have even bought property without ever visiting back in 2006, so I really don't see that people in future will NEED to enter space stations for anything at all.

I've got Expansion Pass but I can't see me ever wishing to wander around a space station.

OP describes the main reason why I won't upgrade to the lifetime expansion package, as I have no plans on buying it. I don't see the point of walking around my ship, station or planet surface.

They will most likely feel like tacked-on features, and smell like box ticking exercises which is one of the reasons why FD went to KS in the first place, I believe. But instead of fulfilling marketing department or publisher requirements for certain features to cater to the lowest common denominator, the crowdfunding alternative is to appease backers who were promised unrealistic and pointless features as part of a heady and far-reaching KS campaign.

And most importantly, E: D is not an FPS, and FD has not demonstrated that they can make a compelling FPS, with or without the S. FPS genre is a very mature genre, and a newcomer has a lot of learning to do (witness Dust 514).

Even if FD had the funds, manpower and skill set to pull it off, I'd rather see those resources put to use in making E: D a more compelling game in its own right, rather than expanding to other genres.

!00% correct IMO. FD cannot simply enter a genre owned by very experienced developers and hope to make even a barely acceptable go of it. The people making FP(S) style games know this genre and the technologies inside and out. I imagine the Far Cry 4 team are not exactly losing sleep over the thought of FD attempting to put FP elements into ED...

Also, there's no reason to think the engine - geared up for space combat - would be re-purposed to FP style use so easily.

Development houses should play to their strengths.

This is fine and all, until you understand that FDEVs plan from the start is to have avatar gameplay.

How meaningful, engaging or good it will be depends on what FDEV have in plan for the game, and how well they can accomplish it.

And from what I have seen already, I trust them to do good. Here is a simple example (click for full res).

This is some concept art for a space cabin/ship interior room. Since the ED universe does not have artificial gravity, rooms can be used in more than one directions. FDEV are fast to capitalize on that and show gameplay innovation even in a simple concept image.

Pretty cool eh?

100% false. FD doesn't enter genre, they create their own - "GTA in space". Far Cry 4 isn't exactly sandbox game, it has huge continous levels, but that's about it.

And their engine is geared up for FP style, because they actually developed FPS game - "Outsider".

As FD have to make the game playable to both expansion pass owners, and those without.
It will actually mean that it's a optional freature, you can use or not.
If you WANT to, and have the pass, then explore the station/planet surface.
Pick up whatever they include, Extra missions, gossip, steal a ship. Kill a opponent.
escape the police on station.
A hole lot of options will probably be available.
Until now FD have only showed top quality work, so i'm not worried.
A planetary surface will give a lot of other options than stations.
Artifacts, wildlife hunting, only FD imagenation will set the limit.
These freatures is probably at least 6 to 12 months in the future as quality takes time.
So to recap, If you don't like to walk. Stay in you'r ship. I'll be in the bar, Laser hidden
under the tabel. For safety.

Its not possible to say if its 'cool' as they are merely concept stills. Many games have truly stunning concept stills and suck beyond compare upon release. Just as Many games have gash graphics and are awesome; in fact ED's graphics (beta) are nothing to write home about but I believe the game could be great.

So we could only judge such an add-on upon release.

I think my point and that of others is merely that we are glad its an optional add-on we are discussing, as we don't feel that sort of game play is for us, but we appreciate others may like the option. That's the good thing about it being an expac option rather than core.

Also, the ridiculously modeled and textured npc's just made it that much more unbearable.

Please, please, please..........

No more montrosities, those decreped fraggle like creatures spitting "show me your wares, show me your wares!" when you try speak with them..

I can't take it anymore!

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Dante80 again."

I agree - it was planned from the start. Part of the reason why I so enthusiastically pledged (and kept pledging until I had Alpha) to ED was the promise to eventually have this and the planetary landing feature.

Personally I'd be very upset if Frontier announced tomorrow that they were scrapping plans for first person gameplay.

X:R is the only game I have ever got a refund on! It is a lesson in hubris and selling out your fan base.

I think you did well there to do that. Nice to hear you got your money back, I hoped one day it could be a good game, but somehow, can't see it. The game feels wrong when compared to earlier x games.
