So, why did you choose the name you have?

I didn't choose my CMDR name. I went to log in one day without realizing the Beta had ended and the servers had been wiped for Gamma. So, I put in my old backer number and only then realized that I was creating a new CMDR.

Never bothered to change it, as my CMDR would never tell anyone his real name anyway, let alone plaster it all over space with an IFF transponder.

Almost true- it was an off hand background joke from early Red Dwarf, regarding crowd control with 'rubber nuclear weapons'.
From an iconic episode in the best series too :)

So you are the infamous Backer#xxx who's discovered all those systems? :D

Following a severe bout of not thinking inventively I gave my first commander a family name he doesn't use because it makes him sound silly. Later, his younger brother followed in his footsteps, but often uses his older brother's name to avoid the publicity his own name sometimes brings.
If you meet them out there, offer a cheerful greeting and extensive sympathies to Walter Wall Stardust and Alvin Wall Stardust (you have to be a really old Brit to understand this one).
They didn't choose their names. They are the victims of an almost - but not quite - partially unstable thought process.

So you're the guy that hasn't flipped a system and changed the lives of thousands by making a few deliveries.
No that would be me.

At least I have not done such things by intention and as I don’t tend to notice states and the like I wouldn’t No if it had happened or not.

Though I did get some minor faction annoyed enough during a bounty hunting CG years ago that they sent the assassins out after me which two things happened firstly the money came in faster and secondly I headed back to the station while I still had ammo so I could greet any assassins who interdicted me.

In the early days I settled on Loki, and since the internet wasn't that popular I could often nab the name, and this was long before there were a bazillion loki's on the internet and before the rise of the MCU. Over time I had to start appending numbers to the name as it got harder to get the base name.

Then, more than 10 years ago, i became a dev for a NWN2 persistent world, and I wanted a new name that was separate from my player account, to keep my dev and player account separate. The persistent world was based on Planescape and the hub was Sigil: City of Doors, ruled over by the Lady of Pain. So, in a poor attempt at being funny, i decided to go with a Lady of Pain analogue, Agony Aunt, which some will know is a person, usually an elderly lady, who gives advice to people who have problems, popularized in tabloid newspapers, especially around the 1980s. Since i spent a lot of my time helping players with problems, i thought it was apt.

At times, on various forums, i've had my avatar be that of Claire Rayner, probably the most well known agony aunt there was.

Voroshk
From Glen Cook's series The Black Company. Voroshk is a race of extremely powerful wizards that are not very smart.
I first used this for my WoW mage. Since then I have used it for many game characters.

Greasetrap
Just a funny name I used for a WoW gnome utility alt, and since use sometimes as a junk name when logging into stuff. When I joined the forums I didn't know I was going to play ED much and when I registered for the forum I just used it without much thought.

So, why did you choose the name you have?
I started on Playstation, where your CMDR name is the same as your Playstation handle. Consoles tend to appeal to a younger demographic, and when I started console gaming, I realized that I was a bit older than the average teenager playing COD and the other hot games of the day. So I decided to pick the name "Old Duck" because it was fun way of letting other players know I was an "old guy" while still being a fun handle. Technically I was "OneOldDuck" on PS4, because Old Duck was taken. There are planets out there tagged by "OneOldDuck" - that's me from my PS4 days! When it came time to switch to PC years later, I contemplated coming up with a new, cool name, but by then I was well-known in the Elite community as Old Duck, and the name was available on PC (thanks Stigbob for pointing that out), so I decided to stick with it.

The irony is that while I was an "old duck" compared to the average person playing COD and Overwatch on Playstation, I'm actually younger than the average player of Elite!

"Alien" is my real-life nickname. As is the rule with nicknames, I didn't choose it, it was chosen for me. But, "Alien" is often hard to get online on websites and forums because it is a common word. I got so fed up of not being able to get it as a name, I came up with "Alee Enn" which if you say it out loud is, "Alien", but a lot of people don't make the connection, which I don't mind, it's not their fault it's obscure. So those are my two commander names in Elite "Alien" for my main account, and "Alee Enn" for my rarely used second account.

If anyone needs character names, I recommend this site: Fantasy Name Generators
I've spent hours on some of those name generators. It can be a wonderful waste of time.

Also, Alien/Alee Enn is a fantastic general sci-fi combo. Useful everywhere.

My Cmdr name is Arbilac; I've used it across games for 25+ years. At the time I struggled with it and I looked out of my window at the time and saw my car, a Vauxhall Calibra. I just wrote it backwards.
I like that. Kinda like the old place name "Egassap Tercses". What's amazing is that you've been consistent with it for so long. Some people go through periods when they're constantly changing name from one game or social media platform to another. Consistency though is pretty admirable.

I was thinking of something that verged on possible but also seemed grandiosely ridiculous for my character. Then I remembered the Michael Caine film The Ipcress File where his character Harry Palmer tells a girlfriend how he wished he had a cooler, more American name. When she asks what he says “Oh I don’t know. Something like Rock. Rock Hunter.”

It fitted my game character well but I’ve always imagined anyone on the forum that sees my name must just assume I love Exploration.
Rock Hunter is good for everything. Exploration. Mining. Music. Whatever. And it is pretty much the most American name I've ever heard besides Max Power.

'Kzak' was a name I first used for Anarchy Online in the early 2000s. I had intended to use 'Zach' but that was of course taken. I altered it to Kzak, playing as an engineer with a name that was a bit like an electrical sound became my handle and has been the online name I've been using for over 20 years now.
Anarchy is a classic. Like Neocron or SWG. Same as willsit/Arbilac, this kind of consistency is awesome.

Darkfyre99 has a long history, starting with a sorceress I created for an AD&D game (there was no 99 at the time) which I adopted during my goth phase in my teens, and later started using online.
...
When it came time for names of her parents and grandparents, I went to Behind The Name and their random name generator, as I frequently do when I need random names, and chose names of Scandinavian descent, and chose Stevenson (anglesized from Stephensson) for her surname.
Did you ever play much CP2020 or Red? I bet you would love the Cyberpunk character creation process.

I just couldn't name my toon after the winner "de Beaumanoir", sounded too foo-foo).
Way too foo-foo. Nobody's gonna take you seriously with a name like "de Beaumanoir" unless you're a straight-up villain, and even then...

Silenus Keats, referring to characters from Hyperion novels.
This book cover is burned into my brain. I have no idea why. It's just so memorable. So is the line "I did not finish the poem. It was not by choice. My muse had fled."

It's also worth noting that Cmdr Stevenson writes the most amazing stories during Buckyball races! That are well worth a read even if you're not running the race yourself :)
I miss Buckyball. I'm still in the Discord. I still see Alec's status change to "Online". Makes me happy every time. It's like, if Alec's around and the Buckyball general chat is still popping off on a daily basis, then all is well in the world of Elite Dangerous.

Damn, Morbad. You're an old schooler. And you're right. If you're up to no good, it's no good if they all know who you are. :sneaky:

I swear, this woman wrote more things of consequence than any copywriter who ever lived.

The irony is that while I was an "old duck" compared to the average person playing COD and Overwatch on Playstation, I'm actually younger than the average player of Elite!
Compared to the average COD player, I'm pretty sure most Elite players are absolute greybeards. But it makes sense, right? Games that don't tilt toward constant input and instant gratification don't appeal to the kids. They didn't appeal to me when I was one. It took a game called Planescape: Torment to convince me that games were more than twitching and raging. That game is legitimately the best book I've ever played.

I started Elite on PS4 in 2018, getting on for five years ago now, my PSN name being the one I'd set when I started console gaming in the late 2000's after being a PC gamer previously (Doom, Quake etc). My orignal PS4 Elite name was CMDR Battybat99, taken in part from Keith Michell's late 70's hit 'Captain Beaky' which featured lots of brave animals like Timid Toad, Reckless Rat, Artful Owl and of course Batty Bat (no excuses :) ), mixed up with a long standing love of the Caped Crusader. I had a good couple of years doing things like Distant Worlds 2 and Lost Souls 2, then after PSVR came out and I'd bought one, my friend (Optimal Pint in game) was playing Elite on PC and we forced the PSVR to clunkily work with it (obvioulsy it doesn't work with Elite on PS4 at all). This was a watershed moment for me. Elite in VR is utterly breathtaking and I resolved there and then to jump back to PC gaming, invest in a Quest 2 and start all over again with a new account. Which I did over 2 years ago now.

My current CMDR, Caelum Incola was born after I wanted a name that was a little more sophisticated and hopefully didn't sound as cringeworthy as Battybat99 :)
After much wailing and gnashing of teeth (these things are important!!) I landed on a latin translator online and tried to find something that looked like a real name, but that meant something unrelated to rubber wearing billionaires or fictional flying rodents.

Caelum Incola means Heaven Dweller or Sky Resident depending on which translator you use. I felt that was quite apt for Elite, and I've been murdering Latin translations ever since when naming most of my ships. o7
