What's ship integrity?

I've just noticed this in the maintenance menu. It's at 67% which is the same as my paintjob. Is it just the paint?

It isn't the paint, but integrity and paint both wear at the same rate: they both lose 1% for every 100,000 Ls travelled in Supercruise. The dev post linked above mentions other things which are supposed to cause integrity loss (like repeated high-G maneuvering) but the only thing we've ever noticed to cause a loss is Supercruise travel.

So it's possible to honk'n'scoop your way to Sag A* and back, and still have 97% integrity left. But fly to Hutton Orbital (6.2 million Ls away from the jump-in point) and you'll lose 62% of your integrity. It's worth bearing in mind if you're tempted to fly to Hutton a couple of times, just to get your paint to 0%. Repairing paint is cheap, repairing integrity is expensive, especially for the costlier ships.

Still seems to be some confusion despite the earlier post by DNYI (+1). To summarise:

- Integrity relates to general state and condition of your hull.
- It is meant to reflect wear and tear.
- It doesn't affect modules.
- It caps out at 30% (meaning your hull integrity will fall to 70% over time even, even though the hull is 100% intact*)
- It can be repaired like other damage to your ship.

* This seems to be borne out by the fact that I recently travelled almost 40,000 ly in a single trip (around 2,000 jumps) and the hull indicator in the cockpit did not move when flying around. It only moved when I did something dumb (rough landing).

Haven't seen any stats around this, but assume therefore, if ship A has 100% integrity and ship B has 70% integrity, then ship A will suffer less hull damage from a catastrophic event and ship B will suffer more hull damage from the same event?

well, if your ship has 0% integrity, that any incomming damage takes away 1.4 times as much hitpoints from your hull as if it was at 100% integrity.

so a catastrophic event that would cost you usually more then half of your hulls hitpoints, will suddenly almost kill you.
