Have you ever seen the devices used in space in order to go #1?
Males have a 50% chance of losing their thing ...
It is much safer being a female ...

When I was an EVE pilot, my corp IC explained to me that "People make pretty characters of their preferred sex because they want to look at someone they find sexually attractive without feeling guilty".
I thought "Ah, that explains why my toon is friendshipdriving gorgeous then" :D.

Well I initially picked Ky Vatta from the Vatta's War books because her backstory is such a great fit for Elite. So when Holo Me arrived it was a choice between using a female avatar or retconning my CMDR as Kylara's lesser known male cousin. :)

I often think that if I'd named my character Mal Reynolds I'd have made some very different career choices in game…

I've never understood why people find it strange that some straight guys like to create female avatars.

They are straight guys so why would they want to spend their gaming time looking at a male character? This is especially true when playing a third person game. Makes sense to me that a guy is perfectly happy watching the butt of a female character rather than watching the butt of a male character.

Whilst some people claim to be confused about this issue, I have to wonder if they might actually in truth be confused about something else entirely... :D [haha]

This kind of heteronormative argument you see everywhere is clearly false, because the exact same people will bang on about how they want immersion and role play at the same time. By that crazy logic, lesbians would only use female avatars to ogle the goodies on screen, rather than represent who they are as a human being.

If you want to 'be' in the game world, why would you pick something that isn't you?

To just say it's because heterosexual men like to objectify women's bodies is a poor, and very sad argument, and says more about the people that do that than anything that they say.

Yet in a game like Elite Dangerous it's even more confusing - because unlike 3rd person games, or games like Mass Effect where you 'see' your character in cut scenes and talking to other characters. you don't actually 'see' your avatar in this game unless you're using the new camera system to make machinima or you're looking at a small 2d photo of it in a chat window.

The argument that it's nicer to objectify a female human doesn't even apply in this game.

Bah. Load of twaddle. When people start spouting phrases like "This kind of heteronormative argument you see everywhere is clearly false" my eyes start to roll.

"Heteronormative" means implying that only heterosexuality is normal, and that any other sexualities are not. That is nothing whatsover to do with what gender of avatar a player of any sexuality choses to play as.

It's a role-playing game. Playing as another gender, skin colour, species (if only we had Argonian, Khajit), etc, etc does not preclude immersion in a galaxy where you get to fly your own blimming starship.
