What's with all the guys using female avatars?

It's simple: a lot of people rather look at a woman on screen than a man. It's not about recreating or playing as yourself in a game - it's about creating and controlling a character. Although I've created "myself" first in this game, I'll definitely create a female preset as well, and probably will look at her more than myself. For me it's simply a cosmetic thing - it's better to look at. That's why I play with female characters in a lot of other games, like Mass Effect or other RPGs. I don't think it's tied to one's sexuality at all.

Fair enough for me, but that's probably for 3rd person view games where you can actually see yourself. But maybe it helps for getting more invitations...? We should go for a proof here...Anyway- is there a certain name for this kind of sexuality? Like Pixelsexual or something?

Always reminds me of that Bruce Willis film where everyone has an avatar. He investigates the death of a hot girl robot thing and it turns out to be a fat dead guy!

Hot female 'holome' avatars with a blokes's voice on comms in multiplayer. Ruins my little illusion for a bit  :D

Kind of amused about this thread (although I'm not saying it's not an interesting one): we have no problem with players being pirates, players assassinating npcs, smuggling illegal goods and such, but when someone plays as the opposite gender we are stumped? :)

I suppose watching Force Awakens must be difficult where the chief protagonist is a female. How can males relate and filter the Star Wars experience through a differently gendered character? How different is it to playing a male character which is stunningly chiselled, if you are not? Is that not equally weird, being something you're not?

It's a character development. I think some men enjoy playing a female just because it further divorces the character from being "them" but a different identity. Anyone who thinks that female roles from male players is just some sort of fantasy sexualisation is marginalising their fellow players. I'm using a male character right now, but he's so dull and generic, I'm tempted to swap to a female. It's fresh, something I've not done before and my Elite character isn't "me" so why should it have to be my gender?

I´ve created a male avatar, but I will use light yellow lipstick and orange eye shadower, because I found it looked quite good. Don´t know where that puts me

Psssh, I often play as a female in any game where you have to look at your toon a lot, would rather look at a girls bum than a blokes bum, not that I have anything against blokes bums, just prefer female ones.

99% of BETA testers were lady characters. 99.9% were men in real life. Now after we had a go at making ourselves with the tool then make us transgenders we mostly reverted back to old males again which have more character.

Antidisestablishmentarianism... or the need to examine things electroencephalographically...

This is the funniest post in ages. I've learned all sorts of new words. I'm definitely scarred for life...

mostlikely because staring at a male guys all time is less interestign as staring at a female. Especially in 3rd person games, does a guy wlaways want to see the butt and back of another male? Unlikely.

So the real questions is: do you prefer looking at amles or females?

Because it realyl depends on what the avatar in a game is, for some ti is a self presentation, for others it is just a chracter not reflectign the own self. It's a thing between the character is me, vs the character is someone else. Males using a female avatar mostlikely don't refer that charaters as themselves.

Uhh, b/c they can.

My current playthough of Skyrim features a female wood elf cutthroat.

Female wood elf Nightblade in ESO here.

And contrary to all pseudo-phsycological explanation attempts, i am a straight up and self assured male all the way through, always have been.

Why do i roll some female chars in games ?

Because i find it aesthetically pleasing and not at all interfering with me being a male.

That char on the screen isn't "me", as in i don't identify with it or role play it, it's my means to interact with the game world.

At best it has to be "relatable", for example, i struggle slightly more with creating relatable humanoid-animal (cats, lizards, etc) sort of avatars, regardless of gender.

So, just stop reading to much into the "why", folks.

I just explained my reasoning, and you can be sure there are many other explanations.

None of which should really matter to you.
