What's Wrong With Elite.

You need to use your imagination…

If it's just walking to a ship and literally nothing else then I would agree it's a waste of time but then you don't and you get views like this

That's how hype works. Show nice things and let the imagination of the potential customer run wild with imagining the possibilities. The problem with this type of marketing is that the customers at some point notice the absence of all the cool things they imagined.

And for that picture of that cool view - how often do you imagine will players go to that place and look down? Most people will look at it once or twice and then start complaining about how tedious it is having to walk around just to buy stuff (adding that even today we can buy stuff online without having to go to a store).

Edit: oh, that "buying things online" already happened in this thread - I'm slow :D

There is nothing wrong with Elite Dangerous. If i want to play a port of Elite 2 and 3,then play Eilte Dangerous. Thats it. The whole game mechanic is from the 80´s and 90´s. It´s not wrong but super meta for those which are not familiar with those old games.

I played those games too. I've played ED since Alpha, I'm a kickstarter backer, I defend the game and Frontier a lot, I'm accused of being a white knight when I do so. But even I can't say 'There is nothing wrong with Elite Dangerous'.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with this: are both games running on the same engine?

Yes, they both use the Cobra Framework as does planet coaster. Whether the software is easily interchangeable is another question. Just because they use the same framework doesn't mean it's easy to port over.

It seems really obvious to me that the code they're writing for the Jurrassic park game will be used in ED to give us space legs and procedurally-generated alien mega fauna.

Is that not obvious to everyone else??

You may be correct indeed...in which case they will probably sell it as paid-for DLC.

Personally, I would likely buy it...but I would also expect more than mere 'cosmetics' and it would have to be non-combat related. There is more than enough pew-pew design in this game already.

Hmm, I didn't realize SC had come so far. It's actually impressive. :)

But imagine the forum rage if a single A-B trade run took that long. Lol

"Nah credits per hour be nerfed!"
"Why do I have to walk so far!?"

Lol

I do admit, running in to a port to order cargo, and having it sat physically on your ship is much better for gameplay than just clicking 'buy' from the bridge.
Although, the next question, is how did it get there..?

"Cargo magically appears on my ship.. mah immersion! FD create a loading mechanism!"

"Loading mechanism is effecting my credits per hour! Get rid of loading mechanism!"

Lol

#ForumWars

I agree. SC is impressive.

Unfortunately though, it has no provision for VR.

I have always played ED in VR and to be honest, if ED was not VR, I wouldn't play it at all.

I agree that it needs to meet expectations which I pointed out above. As for views and walking, every open world FPS does it and nobody is complaining and you should be able to order stuff from the bridge for regular stuff. More shady deals might require a smokey bar and a dark corner OR fragile shipment might require you to oversee the delivery to the hold - none of which will happen of course because I don't think Chris Roberts has that much fidelity in him - so whilst we can imagine, it's also important that we check ourselves and imagine for the worst and most simplistic systems lol

I played the original 1984 game and spent half my then (relatively) young life on it. It was new and exciting.

Now, the design is old and continues to age...rapidly.

They have autopilots linked to them as well. Even my aging Cessna 172 has an autopilot...yet in the 34th century, autopilots apparently do not exist.

I was more pointing out that there's too many inconsistencies to be able to apply logical arguemnts like that to this game that doesn't run using any logic. We should be able to buy from the cockpit just like we should be able to get prices of good to any system and a whole host of other stuff as well.

Let me start off by saying I'm a bit of a defender of Frontier and Elite: Dangerous. And I am NOT a backer, player or fan of Star Citizen. To be honest, I have no intention of playing the game, though when it's released and if it's decently optimised, I might give it a whirl. But the other night at 4am or somesuch I came across this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab9q5ZQw20M

It's a guy. Doing a cargo run. That's it. He hauling stuff from A to B. And honestly, it made me relook at our own game and the problems with it. He's just going to A and flying that stuff back to B and it's more exciting than anything I've come across in ED outside of first contact videos last year.

Because there's a sense of tension, an immersion he isn't even aiming for and would probably laugh at me for suggesting he was immersed. But he was, it's in every syllable he speaks.

Space legs (EVA) and more fun missions are the top features that ED misses.

We've nagged Frontier for years to add SPACE LEGS. Every year Frontier has some Bull#$$# excuse as to why it's not coming that year. It's pathetic.

It's always "we want to do it right" "we're working on it" "it needs meaningful content", that's true, but it's not okay to keep delaying this for years and years.

Frontier must deliver on their kickstarter promises and the roadmap they mentioned in Newsletter #29.

  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports

Good point, well made.

No offence, but I always thought it was a tiny minority that wanted "Space-Legs"
It never made any logical sense from a Gameplay perspective, doesn't have any historical precedence in the Historic Games Elite draws upon and won't add anything from a content point of view...
Given ALL the other GAME related things FD could be (are - in the case of upcoming Q4 content) working on in terms of Exploration, Mining, Wingmen etc etc...is adding a free camera so everyone can view the interiors of their ships once or twice before forgetting about it REALLY a priority???

But you could have a poop simulator like SC wants to implement! Wouldn't that be great. Sit on the toilet and do stuff?

I have too many $$$,4 figures, invested in SC but have never ever played it(except the early days of walking around my hangar).

I agree with all the statements regarding SC and its bugs, promises, FPS, features...but I will still say ED can't rest on its laurels, time is nearly up and we will soon have live competition.

Ye, I hear X will release another game. 2018?

they made it crystal clear in the kickstarter and there are many posts by the devs, even few months old about it.

Ah yes, back in the old days...when there was going to be a dedicated offline single-player mode...and Combat was going to be like Dogfighting...alots changed since those days...

Its David Braben and FD devs who want space legs, they made it crystal clear in the kickstarter and there are many posts by the devs, even few months old about it.

Indeed. They also stated several time that it's a "not soon" feature of elite.

When they'll implement it, I hope it'll go beyond a walking simulator. Eve and X : rebirth should serve as strong cautionary tales here.
