What's your beef with this sublime game?

Make it a off-line single-player game and eliminate all the multi-player crap, including the 'balance' nonsense.
I'm actually laughing at myself while I'm typing this, because I used to think exactly that. To the point where I was THIS close to jumping off the bandwagon and leave ED for dead back during pre-release when "offline" was taken off the table.

Now, however, I can't imagine myself playing it any other way that the way it is, hence my laughing at myself. I do know and understand the "why does everything have to be online these days" feeling, I feel that way myself most days, but for ED I happily make an exception. Besides, even if I DID decide I never wanted to play with anybody else ever again (ain't gonna happen), I still have Solo. There. No annoying humanses to bother me. ;)

All of this to say: You already have single player. It's called Solo. As to the balancing, it would still be there, since FD would still be the one arbiter when it came to what you could earn/do in offline single player.

First things first let's get the obligatory showering of adulation out the way. Elite, without a doubt, is an incredible accomplishment. For it's genre it possesses qualities that can arguably be said to be perfect. in some aspects it is literally above any and all criticism. It has a heritage that spans decades and its creator's dedication to this pedigree is beyond reproach. David Braben obviously cares deeply about it and it shows in almost every facet of the game. With that said there is something that inarguably leaves a hollow space in whatever it is we satisfy by playing games and I'd like to know, as specifically as you can say, what simple improvements do you think could fill those irritating absences.

For me it's the way FD seems to think obstacles are equivalent to puzzles and it leads me to wonder about the creative department. The aspects of the game that most highlight this for me is the Engineers and, having recently got into exploration, Detailed Surface Scanning. Elite's pedigree may have demanded it keeps a certain character but I think with the imminent release of Odyssey that pedigree has been irrevocably altered and I'd love for them to embrace it by doing something radical in the direction of fun and engaging gameplay.

Engineering is a hugely wasted opportunity to have a perfect little side game. In reality chance does not play a role in designing and building equipment. All constituent parts are purpose built to serve a role as efficiently as possible and to work in harmony with it's other constituent parts. The game itself is brilliant example of this. David Braben hasn't ignored any aspect where his expertise could accurately reflect his vision and the reality it's set in. However this has led me to wonder hard about how he views and employs creative people and abstract game design. The pure random nature of rolling for upgrades is baffling and it is reflected in the Detailed Surface Scanner. Both of these dynamics are crying out for a minigame, both of which could employ an encouragement to learn a little about maths or geometry in keeping with what seems to be Mr. Braben's philosophy to make Elite something more than a shooty game. There are tonnes of simple but enormously engaging puzzle game apps now for mobiles. What is it do you think that prevents FD from injecting something like this to give those moments of passive observing more appeal? In fact in the case of exploration I'd argue it is desperately needed. I spent more than two hours in one system yesterday scanning every world because the current CG is asking for 2 million scanned worlds with bonuses for Ammonia Worlds.

I remember when mining was just about sitting there lasering asteroids but something motivated him to apply the same pedigree to that as to the traditional game. Do you think they made it brilliant because they knew it would be needed for people to get into Fleet Carriers?

Griefing
Ganking
Seal Clubbing
...
You get the idea. The game is open season for bully boy aholes that think this stuff teaches players stuff.
The don't name and shame policy is wrong imo. FDev actually promote it!
Yeap. I came very close to walking away from ED.
Never play in Open within 3k of the bubble. Play in my own PG.

After that comes before all the rest of the grind / bug complaints here.

My beef is definitely a me problem. Fleet carriers upkeep drove me away and jump range is way to low. Now we are gonna be running around with pistols playing call of duty on planets. Just not made for me. 5 k plus hours and I've finally put it down for awhile.

Direction Elite is taking is just different than the plan I thought they were going. As a VR player only, that also took a hit. I was expecting walking in ships and not running around going pew pew .

The realtion with the ship has died because of that. Again a me problem. Still the best Vr experience I've ever had and have zero regrets. One day I'll be back just not any time soon I think.

We shall see what the next update brings and how I feel after testing it out. VR is what brought me here and I feel lack of VR is what has also led to me taking a break. And the fact its just another pew pew space game

The rate of progress is pretty disappointing, there seems to be a trend towards focusing on details that produces something excellent in many respects but that somehow misses the mark. There have been occasional flashes of brilliance though (flight model, BGS & manipulating factions, stellar forge) & rather than not play I just don't use the stuff I don't personally have a use for.

I don't mind what they add, and if the game appeals to a broader audience all the better imo & I just want them to get on with it & tell us what's coming, but it does annoy me when stuff is removed; it leaves me with less stuff to choose from & I can easily imagine one day being in your position, of having bought something good & no longer feel able to enjoy it as I used to (currently do in my case).

I play as much as I do because I know that unlike most of my other games one day I know I will no longer be able to, and I would wish I had done more when I could. So I do it now :)

So that is precisely where I am now. When I got this game it was different, there was much more to do. After few nerfs however game is no longer a game I've purchased...

Beefs?

Grind (imagine the 16 million repetitions of that word to illustrate the extent of the problem). I know that MMOs are essentially grindy things, but the engineering grind, materials grind, rank grind, guardian tech grind, along with the always expected money and fame/status grinds are simply too much, and FDEV really seems to think that they are a perfectly suitable replacement for interesting gameplay. So we get dull and repetitive missions, flavorless NPCs, and always the need to trade our time away for the ability to trade more time away.

Add to that the failure to address existing bugs and the constant introduction of new ones with every update.

The thing is, I love ED, and have loved Elite since I played the original game in the '80s. It is hands down the best VR experience I have had. But there is a level of frustration inherent in playing that makes it too easy to find other things to spend my time and money on. And one of the biggest parts of that frustration comes not just from gameplay issues, but the sense that FDEV just doesn't care about fixing it - this is a cash cow to be milked as long as possible, and they would rather try to introduce splashy new features to get some press and more cash flow than to spend the effort it would take to fix what is wrong.

I will keep playing, because I am still addicted, but it is not the joy it once was.

The game lacks direction, rewards and user experience design and trades them for RNG, repetition and obscure mechanics.

It takes too much time and internet research to progress in the game, to find cool stuff like guardians or generation ships or otherwise fun gameplay. Some open world games may hold your hand a bit too much but Elite does it too little and relies on 3rd party tools too much.

Well, the matter has been decided for me. Haven't been playing much of late, waiting for the 'floating barge' thing to quiet down. Now, after several updates (barge #8?) the client can't connect to the server. Been trying for a couple of days now. After several years and several thousands of hours, the game just gets stupid on me.

And no, no changes on my end. My system has been the same since I started playing this game. So...everyone have a good time waiting for whatever you are waiting for. I guess I'm outta here.

And no...you can't haz my stuf. ;)

Aside from the grind i.e. the guardian unlocks, the main thing for me is travel- supercruise and jumping. Jumping in particular. For me from the time I hit the fsd to the end of the jump that time is 34 seconds, not including fuel scooping and slingshot to the next jump alignment. Not bad, but take my last trip to Colonia- 162.6 minutes of that loading screen aka 'jump' one-way, double it for the return (which I did not, took the sidewinder express). Over two and a half hours of that goodness, borderline brainwashing and damn it gets OLD quick. I want to see the next system but after 162 minutes of load screen goodness it kills all immersion and desire to play...and elite players have been doing this for YEARS.

..and supercruise, wow just staring at is it 7 seconds, 6 seconds, oh-oh....you're killing me smalls. Why does my Fed Corvette with a much bigger FSD sound just like my Dolphin in SC.
