Which missing species are essential for recreating your favorite zoo? - META WISHLIST

A lot of people attempt recreating their favorite (usually local) zoos. Wandered what is missing for each of you, and as usual I will compile this into a list, in the vein of @random goat meta-wishlist.

The moose for example is very popular but found in very few zoos.

The usual rules:
  1. Only species within current game mechanics (no aquariums, aviaries, exhibit mammals etc)
  2. Make two lists: list for species missing completely, and a list for species with a reasonable substitute ingame
  3. Limit the list to a total of 40 species
  4. Species must be essential to recreating you favorite zoo, both habitat and exhibit are valid
  5. Mention the name of the zoo

Format:

Fauna example zoo, Forumstan:
  1. Lar Gibbon
  2. Hamadrayas Baboon
  3. California Sea Lion
  1. Sumatran Orangutan - Bornean Orangutan
  2. Malayan Tiger - Bengal Tiger
  3. Vicuna - Llama

Of course, 'reasonable substitute' is subjective, so a species with no substitute in one list may appear as a species with substitute in another list.

List will be updated on saturday.

My local is Orana Wildlife Park.

For completely missing species:
  1. North Island brown kiwi.
  2. Tuatara.
  3. Asian small-clawed otter.
  4. Addax.
  5. Tibetan yak.
  6. Asian water buffalo.
  7. Common waterbuck.
  8. African crested porcupine.
  9. Greek tortoise.
  10. Emu.
  11. Siamang.
  12. Sumatran tiger (I don't consider the Bengal a good substitute).
Reasonable substitutes:
  1. Black-and-white ruffed lemur - red ruffed lemur.
  2. Lace monitor - Nile monitor.
There are countless more exhibit animals I could add (mostly native geckos and skinks, some amphibians) but in terms of expectations and being reasonable the only two NZ species I'm really concerned about are the kiwi and tuatara.

Great list! Thanks for limiting it. May I ask, what is your reason for not counting the Bengal tiger as a substitute for the Malayan? Of all species I figured this would be the least controversial substitute.

The Sumatran, not the Malayan. Sumatran tigers are of a much higher conservation concern than any of the mainland subpops and are very deliberately picked for zoos in Australasia and Europe especially because of this. The Bengal tiger doesn't have the same significance to me at all. Honestly I even struggled to say that the red ruffed lemur and Nile monitor are good substitutes - it isn't really how I think of animals.

This is a really good idea. My local zoo is actually my favorite: Grassmere Zoo - if they had giant pandas and brought back the otters and elephants they'd be perfect! Their current expansion plans, before 2020 anyways, was also to bring in lions but I'm not sure after last year where that's at.It's one of the reasons I was so excited to get Clouded Leopards as they are one of the media highlighted animals in our zoo. I can avoid the whole tiger discussion since the one we have is the Sumatran tiger.

They have a decently sized insect house so I'm going to actually not go through and list all the ones missing in that and just focus on the habitat animals, and will also leave off the farm section and petting zoo section that has several cows, pigs and goats. Hoping I'm doing the two lists right.

Completely missing:

Alpaca
Andean Bear
Bontebok
Cape Porcupine
Cotton-Top Tamarin
Cougar
Eland
Masai Giraffes
Mexican Spider Monkey
Red River Hog
Siamang
Southern Pudu
Three Banded Armadillo
Two-Toed Sloth
White Cheeked Gibbon
American Alligator
Alligator Snapping Turtle

Bonus animal: being cared for but not displayed, I'm not sure how that works in relation to if they'll be shown in the future: Caracal.

Of those missing, the ones with reasonable substitutes for me anyways:

Alpaca - Llama
Bontebok - we have so many other African Antelopes, take your pick. Though their coloring is quite unique.
Eland - same as above. I know it's controversial to just lump all the African antelopes together, but that's just my opinion. I really don't need anymore.
Masai Giraffe - Reticulated Giraffe

There's several species of the missing list I don't really care so much if we get or not but there's also some that are high on my list (or have suitable alternates high on my list) because they are at my local zoo.

My local Zoo Zlín has unfortunatelly alot of "niche" and unusual animals so I am missing quite alot. Its an excellent zoo, very beautiful though. I skipped alot of smaller reptiles, flying birds and other smaller animals.

Missing:
Sea Lion
Two-Toed Sloth
Storks
Gelada
Emu
Gaur
Gibbon
Secretary Bird
Scarlet Ibis
Grey Crown Crane
Capybara
Kiwi
Red-necked Wallaby
Spoonbills
Brazillian Porcupine
Tamandua
Domestic goats and sheeps
Pelicans
Tamarins
Spider Monkeys
Saki Monkey

Can substitue:
American Alligator - I am fine with Saltwater crocodille
Roan Antelope - Sable antelope
Blesbok - I am fine with substitute it with different antelope
Greater Kudu - probably would substitute with a Nyala (yes I know, lol).
Sloth Bear - Would substitue by either Sun or Formosan Black Bear.
Vicuna - Llama
Sumatran Tiger - Bengal Tiger
Humbolt Penguin - African penguin
Brazilian Tapir - Baird´s Tapir

I don't recreate real zoos, but I do many zoos based in Europe, so the missing animals that are essential to me are basically any European animal other than the reindeer. I won't make again a list with all the European animals that I need and are missing, so I skip to the second list.

Animals with a "reasonable" substitute in the game:

- European bison. I use the American one and I have to be honest, I'm not able to distinguish between the American and the European bison.

- Nile crocodile. I can use the saltwater crocodile instead, but I think the African one is much more common in zoos in Europe.

-Eurasian brown bear. I use the Himalayan brown bear instead, but I will never forgive Frontier for having chosen this subspecies instead of the much more common Eurasian brown bear. Some people justify it saying that it's good that Frontier chooses lesser known animals, but when the European roster is so poor, removing one of its most iconic animal in favour of a third Asian bear was a horrible choice.

Barbary macaque. I use the Japanese one instead.

Asian black bear. I use the Formosan black bear instead. Another weird choice of getting a very specific subspecies over a more common version.

I'm in SoCal, so I've got a great variety of really excellent zoos around me that I've gone too multiple times, whether that be L.A., San Diego Zoo/Safari Park, or the Living Desert Zoo and I'd say from all of them combined there are a lot I'd love to see, but to make it short I'll just spit out some of my favorites that I think could be fairly plausible.
