White dwarfs and jet cones

Do they all have jet cones ingame? I just stumbled across two (2) white dwarfs in the last few minutes, and they both had jets.

Why do they have jet cones? As far as I know White Dwarfs don't really have jets in real life.

Pulsars (neutron stars) have jets because of the collapse of a massive star into a smaller core increases the spin, like when a dancer spins around on their foot and retract their arms to spin faster.

White dwarfs come from smaller stars like our sun, which don't collapse. They just expand into red giants and shed their outer layers.

Not even all neutron stars have cones either. You have slower spinning neutron stars and also magnetars.

If the game is aiming to be realistic (apart from supercruise and hyperspace travel), I think this should be tweaked. Remove jet cones from white dwarfs, split neutron stars into several subgroups; neutron star, pulsar and magnetar.

Heck, you could probably do something interesting with magnetars as well. 😊 Make them extremely dangerous, so that one might seek to avoid dropping into their systems (although there aren't many of them in the galaxy).

All nuetron stars and White dwarves look functionally the same.

I would be very miffed if white dwarves lost their ability to super charge the FSD.
If you could still do that somehow without the cone graphic, sure?

Yeah, I've seen as much by now. I've played this game in periods since 2015, but I couldn't remember if all the White Dwarfs were like that. So they are.

Again the problem is that it is completely unrealistic. It'd be like putting jet cones on all Red Dwarfs. It's just not a thing (not in general at least). 😅

White dwarfs aren't exotic and powerful entities. They are near-dead stellar remnants that will glow dimly (relatively speaking) for trillions of years before gradually turning into a big rock....

Would be better to just remove the jets from White Dwarfs completely and instead increase the boost you get from Neutron Star Pulsars to make up for that. 🌟

You're playing a PC game that you jump between the stars and travel around the galaxy with no time dilation etc and your immersion was broken by the jetcones of White Dwarfs.

Faster than light travel is a necessary exception in ALL space games because otherwise you'd be dead by the time you made it even a fraction of the way to Alpha Centauri.

That's different. It's unavoidable.

But David Braben himself has said that Elite aims to be as realistic as possible with the exception of FTL travel. I often tell people that when I recommend the game.

So that's why I don't understand why White Dwarfs have been given jet cones.

With your logic, nothing in the game needs to make any sense at all. Let's have pink stars with unicorns flying around them. 🤩

I was quite disappointed myself when i found out that in ED White Dwarfs have jets :/
Yeah, but they used to not have jets until an update was released a few years ago, when jets were added to both Neutron Stars and White Dwarfs. Should only have been added to the former. 😅

That... wouldn't make up for it.

There are very few Nuetron stars, and loads of white dwarves (around the bubble)

I use white dwarves to super charge all the time.

It's a legitimate reason. Sci-fi is meant to stick to it's own rules, and (in general) Elite tends towards a more accurate simulation of stellar bodies than a lot of other games, so, to have an outlier does in fact modify oddly the general internal consistency.

To ride the neutron highway. Just did this myself with Neutron Stars...Was nervous my ship was gonna be toast. Nope, had fun got 4X jump distance due to overcharged FSD

that would be very interesting.

sadly it doesn't appear as interesting as, say, fleet carriers, a ball chasing minigame game called 'explo fleshout madness' or a puzzle with some alien polygons that light up. 🤷‍♂️
