White dwarves are really scary

The very first time I jumped to a white dwarf star it was quite surprising and somewhat scary, but over time I got used to them. Just avoid them and move on.

But they are pretty, aren't they? Just today I once again jumped to such a system on my way to somewhere else, and decided to slow down the supercruise to its minimum speed and just marvel at the beauty of the star and its gigantic gas streams. I seemed to be quite safely far away from it, so no big deal... right?

Except suddenly I get some error message and just drop out of supercruise into normal space. And the frame shift drive is restarting slooooooooowly... Much, much slower than normally. That's when marvel turned into sweat. Here I was, stranded in normal space, awfully close to a white dwarf, with the heat meter going up, and up, and up...

After what felt like an eternity the frame shift drive was finally ready I started charging it and aligned with the next targeted star system, when the computer starts giving scary warnings about overheating... the temperature shows 100%... 120%... 140%... the ship is taking damage, and the frame shift drive is taking forever to charge. Finally it charged and I got to jump out of there, with luckily only minimal damage to almost every component of the ship, and smoke coming out of everywhere.

Note to self: Staring at a white dwarf is like a deer staring at headlights: No matter how pretty, don't do it. (Or at least go to a safe distance first.)

Fdev are so proud of the new cut scenes maybe a short one of you and your ship getting spaghetti-fied and then facing the re-buy screen after getting too close to a black hole? Seems reasonable to me :)

I'm not sure about a WD but with a neutron star, you can "safely" park against the exclusion zone. The trick is to have a cold ship (low emmision power plant), and approach the star at a 90 deg angle to the jets (those are lethal up close). Slow down as you approach, and you'll just be kicked out of SC. Then enjoy the sight! Try and take a picture of the actual NS. It's tiny, but it's in there, and it's even got some details.

I'm pretty sure I tried this "trick" with WDs as well, but I think my ship was heating up slowly.

Dropping from SC in a WD/neutron star jet cone is dangerous, indeed.

However, I'm constantly using white dwarfs to boost my bubble jumps, because once you get the hang of it, it is not dangerous at all. What I do is this: stop immediately after coming out of hyperjump. Rotate so the jet cones are horizontal in my view. Yaw until the WD is at my 9 o'clock. Slowly increase speed while keeping that WD at 9 by yawing, until the cone gets closer. While closing in to the cone, slow down. When the scooping starts, cut throttle and fight the turbulence. Once done, slowly increase speed to get out of cone. Done.

The trick really is to never get the WD red in the radar display.

Definitely scarier than Space Mirrors err I mean Black Holes.

Hell, there's more consequence involved in orbiting a Brown Dwarf than there is a Black Hole in the game.
I have noticed there's a star system somewhere between the bubble and the coalsack nebula that appears to have a whopping three black holes in it. I suppose I'll have to visit it, given that my ship won't be ripped apart immediately.

I'm guessing you're talking about the one with all the stars in one system... yeah, I almost died in that system, barely escaped with like 20% hull. That was my very first planned trip into 'the black'.

White Dwarf stars have scared me since long before the jetcones were introduced. My very first jump in this game back in 2015 involved me crashing into the exclusion zones of those things. I had no idea what I was doing, and took massive heat damage trying to get away.

It was obvious errors that I'd never make now, but I often think twice about taking missions to white dwarf systems, and I usuall avoid during exploration (unless I'm looking for new codex entries).

That's HIP 63835. Only a few hundred Ly from Sol and well worth a visit.

Years ago, a bug emerged that when entering a WD/NS System upon jumping to another System the game crashed. When you reloaded, the game not only put you back into the WD/NS System again, but it placed you within it's deadly exclusion zone, taking huge amounts of damage....struggled but survived in my Exploraconda on way to Jaques Station

I kept away from WD, after this bug was fixed, for years, although now while out exploring I like to discover EVERY varient of WD's that a Region has to offer.

BH, NS & WD's my rule is.....

Always note what type of Star your next jump is going to involve.
Jump into the System at ZERO throttle set (I actually hit my '0' throttle keybind multiple times during the jump animation....just to be sure)
As you enter the System, immediately pull up on the joystick to move your position 'til you have the WD directly behind you.
Then increase distance away from the WD before making your next move.

Never, ever try to Superfuel scoop from a WD, it's Exclusion Zone is extremely close to your 'jump in' position.....something not occuring with NS's (though always 'scoop' the ends of the jet streams, moving away from a NS).

You can actually throttle back during the countdown. It won't show that happening, but it will take effect immediately when you arrive.

The actual fun begins when you drop in normal space inside jet cone 😆

You should try it at least once for science.
Rebuy is imminent.

We never ever supercharge on white dwarves. Seriously. Never.

Ever.
I do...

I did get destroyed twice by the same WD star when I was only a few weeks into playing - I made it past it the 3rd time!
I recently visited a large number of WDs a few KLy out from Colonia, deliberately, so charging up from them got commonplace.
