The very first time I jumped to a white dwarf star it was quite surprising and somewhat scary, but over time I got used to them. Just avoid them and move on.
But they are pretty, aren't they? Just today I once again jumped to such a system on my way to somewhere else, and decided to slow down the supercruise to its minimum speed and just marvel at the beauty of the star and its gigantic gas streams. I seemed to be quite safely far away from it, so no big deal... right?
Except suddenly I get some error message and just drop out of supercruise into normal space. And the frame shift drive is restarting slooooooooowly... Much, much slower than normally. That's when marvel turned into sweat. Here I was, stranded in normal space, awfully close to a white dwarf, with the heat meter going up, and up, and up...
After what felt like an eternity the frame shift drive was finally ready I started charging it and aligned with the next targeted star system, when the computer starts giving scary warnings about overheating... the temperature shows 100%... 120%... 140%... the ship is taking damage, and the frame shift drive is taking forever to charge. Finally it charged and I got to jump out of there, with luckily only minimal damage to almost every component of the ship, and smoke coming out of everywhere.
Note to self: Staring at a white dwarf is like a deer staring at headlights: No matter how pretty, don't do it. (Or at least go to a safe distance first.)
