Who is Odyssey for?

If anything, the prices are baffling from the other end of the spectrum. Do I buy a pistol, or do I buy a sidewinder with twin pulse lasers and still have change in my pocket? Why is everything in Odyssey so expensive? It's cheaper to buy entire cargo holds full of personal weapons than it is to buy individual personal weapons, talk about a bulk discount!

It does seem oddly 'balanced' :)

As far as the OP is concerned I think it's aimed at new players. the FPS part (anecdotally) isn't great compared to some other games that have the FPS bit as their core focus, but... well I don't know who it's aimed at either but quite a lot of people seem to have bought it :)

I like the new (non-POI based) Geo stuff, and the Bio stuff is quite a nice additional thing to do while out exploring. More choices is good, even if each individual player probably won't use all of it different players can pick up on different aspects & still get something out of it.

EDO is not really meant for old and rich players. It can basically make an easier start for possible new players, due to the fairly low cost for gear and Apex. That combined with the credits you get from CZ bonds can make you progress fast in the beginning.
Also the ideas of EDO is not wrong as some people here claimed. It's just a implementation for new players mainly due to lack of endgame stuff. Yes ofc you could add more stuff but mh.
It actually gives a good foundation for the future. Yes it's buggy yes its unoptimized, but the hard part here isn't really the addition of new endgame material. The hard parts is and was the addition of the fps leaving ship thing in the first place since ED wasn't really made directly for that. Yes that leads to some unfinished stuff but it is still better than nothing. Also complaining about the lack of shooter elements is stupid since it is not intended to be you normal shooter.

As I see it we are missing endgame stuff. Guardian weapons and suits would be interesting. Thargoids ground stuff etc. And I am fairly sure this will come at some point. I remember there was a video showing off New unfished stuff like SRVs that were added with the alpha secretly ofc. I am fairly sure this will come sooner or later. Maybe for console release who knows.

EDO and the new settlements could also give a new layer to squadrons with adding squadron ground bases, but that I think is just wishful thinking for now.

Odyssey is a head scratcher to me, I just don't get why Fdev took this basic plain approach, but then again, I was around when multicrew was implemented so I should have expected this I guess!

Me either. I find it hard to believe we got space legs but no ship interiors, not even walking around the cockpits! No EVA, no space salvaging, no planet caves, no ship boarding, no first person multicrew walking around, no surface mining. We just got a bolt on first person ground based shooting game (which most players weren't even asking for) with the added perk of walking around some planet surfaces with not much to do on them.

It's like FDev tried their best to make an expansion which had as little as possible to do with the actual game of flying space ships.

I don't get it either.

This is my biggest complaint. I'd love to go on foot and scavenge wrecks for components that make my SHIP run better (Horizons mats). I'd love to get messages via email in my ship for ON-FOOT missions. As it is (IIRC), there is an invisible wall separating Odyssey content from Horizons content, so that on-foot missions only give us on-foot rewards and vice-versa (credits notwithstanding). Nor can I get an on-foot mission from my ship's mission board. That's just silly! I can drive through McD's and pick up a hamburger in 2021, but I can't drive through a station and pick up a foot-based mission in 3307?

It would also be cool if I could loot advanced science installations for premium ammo for my ship. That would be very cool (though it would tick off white wolf guy).

These things would be easy to implement in current Odyssey, and I hope Frontier considers it. Things like ship interiors and EVA repairs are much more work and will likely in a future update years from now, if at all (sad to say).

The combination of Horizon and Odyssey makes Def sense. It could be entirely possible that this will come with console release and Horizons comp tho we can't really say that 100%. Although it isn't that likely.
For the ship interior it might be possible the big problem could be the engine tho. Entirely possible that it can't properly handle that as of now. Who knows but tbh I am fairly sure we will see this at some point

Game design doesn't revolve around grind. We the players just short circuit it (grind or powerlevel), to get what we want as quickly as possible.
And if game developers cannot get round this gamers trait, then it shows a remarkable lack of new concepts or ideas to circumvent our human behavior.
I'm not a dev I've no idea either.
There lies the problem..
Ain't the game it's us hehe.
If you played the game as intended without grinding?
But that's a big ask. I too grind. And that's what can cause a falloff in gaming. Losing interest cos you've done it and next hurdle...oh isn't one...
The games design is also perhaps wanting us more ingame than is reasonable.
But that's for another thread.

It is for me. Odyssey greatly expands the possibilities to roleplay my character in an intriguing scifi universe.
In a single room, with only about 4 possible layouts in every station with no other emotes other than squatting, with no ability to chat, whisper or even buy someone a drink, sit down and chat or even show them around your ship? Also NPC''s who do not react to your pilot federation rating at all, when in every novel, story and reference seeing an elite pilot is like spotting Lionel Messi

Pretty much. OP may not get who EDO is for, I don't get how hard it is to understand some people like stuff he doesn't. It's quite literally something you learn when you are what, three years old? Four?

I don't like NMS much. It grew leaks and bounds since launch and has gradually become an expansive sci-fi builder/survivalist game. It's not for me, but loads of people enjoy it and that's great for them. X4 is also fantastic, but a bit too much empire spreadsheet management for me. That's not a fault of the game, it just is for other people's tastes. Now, I don't hang around the NMS or X4 communities literally half a decade telling everyone it's not for me. Why would I? I'd prefer to pick a game I do enjoy, and post about that. For me, in the sci-fi genre, it is ED. And EDO Alpha was a huge improvement for me. By the time I get to play the live version sometime next month I have no doubt I will have even more so.

Good times. :)

I am a premium beta backer, so have been riding this train since the beginning.

Like many other players, over the years I have built up a fairly huge fortune in credits.

I'm a billionaire in Elite Dangerous.

For me, when I load up odyssey, I'm left sat there wondering who this expansion was developed for?

I can instantly buy all the suits, all the weapons and as many grenades and breach tools as I can hold, without it making a dent in my credit balance.

Apart from engineers grind (which I refuse to do out of principal due to the insane repetition and mind numbing grind), the basis of progression in elite is credits.

So FDev introduce a new expansion that allows most players to reach the max within 5 minutes of logging in?

I just don't understand what the aim is here, even new players can do a few passenger or trade runs and have enough cash to buy everything on offer in Odyssey.

I get the first footfall thing is a bit cool for the first few times , but after the novelty wears off, it's just more repetition.

The expansion lacks any sort of progression and just feels like a couple of mini games bolted on to the main game.

I don't need to eat, I don't have a home to defend, I can't blow up buildings, I can't steal items to take home and have as trophies, I can't change my suit colours or design in any way, I can't walk around in my ship, service it's parts or change it's interior look so it feels like it's "mine", I can't group up with friends on foot, I can't Eva to repair the outside of my ship or collect scrap/debris, I can't Eva and board someone else's ship. 🤷‍♂️

Odyssey is a head scratcher to me, I just don't get why Fdev took this basic plain approach, but then again, I was around when multicrew was implemented so I should have expected this I guess!

And we all know Odyssey is an expansion, not a season, so we already got what we paid for, maybe the roadmap will show fixes, but I'd be shocked to see atmospheric planets or walking inside ships or EVA to be on that list .

If odyssey was created with the Devs knowing how easy it is to get all the gear and weapons, why didn't they add more "fun" and "adventure" into the expansion, because from what I've seen, it doesn't have either of those things, just more grind and repetition.
Odyssey is for anyone that enjoys it. I've started a new commander just for it, I am finding it to be great fun and full of adventure. There is so much I can do in the game now, it's ridiculous.

As to progression, ED has never been a game about progression. It's always been about player choice. It is the player that makes the game about progression if they so want to, not the game.

I agree, EDO is a very dumb take on what a FPS is.

There isn't a single other first person shooter that offers the scale of play area in the way Elite offers. I mean, if the sense of scale doesn't attract you than ya, obviously this was never going to have the type of tight mechanics like Doom or whatever single player shooter you have in your head.

Name a competitive shooter made in the past 20 years and I most likely have a ranked account in it, I currently have Overwatch, CSGO, Apex and Fortnite (for friends to play with) installed. You have no idea what you're talking, and again just a dumb take. I have way more shooter time than you, that's why I feel confident in my oppinion. You just sound mad because you want something to be angry about.

edit- like, I don't know how you can't love the gravity jumping mechanics if you're a fan of shooters, and how variable they are to the maps. I mean, I havn't had this much fun with movement in a game since Apex came out.

Oh yeah the sense of scale of having an entire empty planet, with small areas where fight actually occurs.

I was merely doing a joke on the underdeveloped FPS aspect of the DLC, but you had to make it your personal crusade, did you ?

You posted a dumb oppinion, if me calling you out on it and asking you to defend it makes it a crusade, than damn buddy, you must be new to the internet. good luck with your posting career!
