Who would like the option of forward locking gimbals?

Everyone who's experienced Star Citizen knows the boat loads of problems that game has, BUT one of the things it has which I wish was in Elite Dangerous, is the ability to lock and unlock gimballed weapons.

At one or more points in previous Elite Dangerous releases, gimballed weapons have been nerfed. I would like to see them get a feature (maybe engineer-able) which would allow the commander to lock all gimbals forward with a command.

I know you can do this (in the right menu) with turreted weapons, but I think we also need this for gimballed weapons. I my thinking the gimaballed weapons in forward locked position would still have a DPS disadvantage but, with active management, could be more effective agains chaff.

I'm pretty sure this has already been requested. I may have even requested this in the past myself. I'm going to check later and make this a feature request if not.

What do you guys think of this idea?

PS: If any of you knows where an existing request like this may already be, please post the link to save me some search time.

i'd like to see a single laser which can be mode switched to turret, gimabled or fixed with appropriate damage for each setting. so if i fire fixed my damage is highest, if i use gimbal my damage decreases accordingly and so forth.

If you could forward lock gimbals then chaff would be useless. Also, can't you just deselect your target, then they act like fixed weapons?

no. the dynamic wouldn't change. just because a player has access to fixed weapons doesn't mean they are proficient in it. any player now can buy fixed weapons but many still choose to only use gimbal.

so chaff would still be useful.

You have it already - it is called deselect target - the gimballed weapons are then even more fixed than are regular fixed weapons.

you have to be specific here and refer to gimballed lasers. completely different when firing gimballed mc's with an unselected target or plasma's

Just fly with fixed, problem solved. I don't use gimbals as I do find it better to practice with fixed and the extra damage they give is superb.

Just fries NPC's instantly and you get the added fact of being more confident to approach the realms of PvP. Due to all the practice I have been doing I can honestly say it has helped me significantly in preventing me from being Griefed and now being able to turn the tide.

Fly safe Cmdr's

No that is not the case - mc's and cannon also fire straight ahead (no harmonization) when fired with no target locked - you can't have gimballed plasmas.

I do usually use fixed weapons vs gimballed, but I still thing gimballed weapons should have a lock option.

I've used the deselect target technique but think that's more of a hack than a solution.

I think the "it will make chaff useless" argument is week.

I'd have to agree with this. If turrets can be programmed to specific direction/facing- then gimbals should have the ability to lock in place.

Else, turrets should be completely unable to lock into specific facing.

Chaff isn't "useless" in this scenario- it means the CMDR using the fixed weapons will simply not have automatic assistance of aiming.

No, gimbals should default to a resting forward position when they detect chaff. This stupid flailing behaviour is just a dumb artificial impediment to their function, especially when you consider that they flail around even when you're not pointing at a chaffing ship.

I don't recall gimbaled weapons having ever been directly nerfed.

Not going to happen for balance reasons and could easily be explained by saying the autotargeting and tracking mechanisms requires proportionally more mass on gimbaled and turreted weapons which prevents the heavier, more damaging version of the weapon from being used.

Yes, it would be nice and make sense. The amount of ignorance in statements like "just deselect target" and "it would make chaff useless" is appalling.

Definitely needs to be hotkeyed.

Currently I find myself having to de-target when my opponent chaffs in order to turn my gimbals fixed. Then I have to re-target when the chaff is gone. It would be nice to hotkey a forward fire button.

If turrets can do it so should chaff. Put the option right above the turret forward fire only button in the right function's panel of your ship. Maybe add a calibrating delay of one second to prevent it from being switched during combat against chaff all the time (so you need to decide in advance). Dispersial field ignores this and scrambles tracking weaponary regardless of firing mode.
