Why am I sat crying in my gaming chair - despite ED being the greatest game

I can only appologise for the trollish comments between the opening post and this one, however you have my sympathies and my support in starting a campaign to establish a static API for motion simulation guys to use. I do not have a motion simulation rig of my own, yet... I do however plan on building one next year in the short to medium term future, so it saddens me to see this state of affairs.

I can draw parallels to what you motion sim guys are doing just now to what our early VR pioneers were doing with google cardboard derivatives and trinus a couple of years ago, this helped accelerate the deployment of VR by opening it to a wider userbase via a lower buy in price point, that increased number of VR users helped incentivise developers to support VR in their games, which kept the hardware manufacturers interested, all these things fed of each other. IMHO the DIY homebrew motion sim guys like on X-SIM are the pioneers, their efforts and experimentation will eventually make it into consumer grade products, unless they get stymied by things like the lack of support for an API.

Have some rep as a demonstration of my support for the cause. However I would like to point out that FDev did make a commanders log and some sort of API to access the contents thereof available for RolePlayers / External website authors, Perhaps if we make them aware of the sentiment that we need some dev support they might put it in motion for us. Lets look at it another way, there is an entire section of the forum devoted to VR, so lots of people have bought into VR, Motion Simulation is the next logical purchase after you have a true VR PC, plus the and controllers and a good set of flight controls. So this time next year lots of people like me, as in Elite Dangerous players who have already invested in their gaming rigs and VR to immerse themselves in the game will have spare disposable income (next years toy budget, if the VR/graphics card/hotas etc this / last years toy budget) and will be looking for the next shiny and that logically would be motion sims so surely.

I hope you not only get the API you need, but can provide a DIY series of instructions for those of us who might be tempted to follow in your footsteps.

"Motion programming"?
I am confused, still. What is the complaint? API for...?
Please don't make me read the OP a third time.

A request for an API for roll, pitch, (as a minimum), yaw, sway, heave and surge. As for the code or memory specifics - that's out of my area of expertise (I'm motors, drives and arduino - not pc or plugins). Our motion-sim developers can be more specific if FD were to acknowledge our request.

Hello Commanders and hello Frontier Developments.

I'm crying in frustration because I can no longer use my chair as I designed it to be used. FD are the only ones who can help me and my fellow, albeit small number of ED online gaming friends who are now all in the same frustrating situation. I'm really hoping that FD read my post as to date our plight has remained un-acknowledged and we've exhausted all other avenues. We are an active, growing group based around the world who have taken the next step in virtual reality in addition to using a vr headset. You see, I built my chair to move with full ED game motion and so have my friends.

I'm sorry that the great ED gaming community will not really be able to reply to this post, aside from maybe offering some sympathy. I'm also sorry if this post seems to be a little selfish as it currently only affects maybe less than 1% of ED players, however, tomorrows technology today....et al. We are some of the ones developing the 'next gen' gaming toys. So in the end it will affect many more in the future. I already have 1500hrs with ED in VR and +100hrs of them with motion.

Our frustration is that with each and every ED update and patch, the game data memory locations change and all our development goes down the drain. We have to start from scratch again in trying to code-match ED with the plugin we wrote to use with ED. Each time it takes between 2 and 7 days to write and test the plugin. With only a couple of our members with the necessary coding skills to do it. To put this in contest, patch 2.3.02 dropped in May and it took 7 days to get the motion working. Now 3 weeks later its all stopped working again. There are 6 full pages of patch notes - many of which have had the same 2-7 days of motion programming from us. In between times, over a third of my gaming room, and the £100's of equipment (+£1000 for some) lies dormant and for the time being - obsolete. Our experts are tiring of having to keep recoding each time and I feel their frustration as well as my own.

Please FD, many games provide motion data in an api with their game. Can we please have a motion data api to use and save us from this utter nightmare. Even if its a "no- we have no intention of providing motion data" reply then at least we know where we stand.

I have posted here before about motion in ED and point out again that we share our motion simulation information and encourage as many people as possible to consider motion in their gaming. I attach a pic and short vid of my chair - this is now completely motionless again as of today.

Thank you for reading. Please remember that little details like this really affect the future development of technology with gaming. Just as ED is designed with VR in mind - ED also works stunningly with motion. A great step forward in gaming that I and others are pushing forward for everyone to get access to but we can only move forward with FD help.

+1 , thank you for what you guys are doing ;)

This clip is necessary for that setup:

And I mean that as an absolute compliment!

Hey OP, have you considered an alternative? Never had a single problem with a Frontier update ;)

I support your asking for a motion API. You'll need a lot of luck.

For background, I would like a UI API to tell me what's going on with the user (which screen is being looked at) but have not had any luck asking.

We at Ed discovery benefitted greatly from the journal API, but Frontier just sprung that on us with a minimum of consultation. It suffers due to this, some of it is hard to use.

250 British Pounds would be about $500Cdn. That's extremely affordable. Do you need to use the HMD? Have you tried it with DCS or Valkyrie?

hi
Don't strictly need the hmd - but its way better with. I only play ED (up to 20hrs/week sometimes). No interest in any other (unless one starts exporting motion support)

This is why posting it in the API forum would have been better. It's hard on this forum to keep the discussion on track.

It's funny cause it's true.

Cool, rig, OP. I wish I could build stuff like that :)

Our (xsimulator) members have posted the same request in the past in various places on this forum. But never heard anything ever mentioned about it so assumed it wasn't going anywhere. As I'm more of an end-user I'll ask one of the 'specialists' to re-post on the API section. He'd be better at specifying exact requirements.

This is a super-cool project, but you're going to fall foul of Frontier's ToS because the memory scraping is a galactic-sized no-no for them.

Alas, it's currently the only way you guys have to get useful/required data to drive your hardware.

I'd love for example to get just some live updates on a ship's or SRV's LAT/LON coordinates when on or near a planet surface. That'd be super handy. But nope.

It'd be great if Xbox and/or PS4 players could somehow transmit their Player Journals to a PC, so they could run apps like EDDiscovery and my Captain's Log, and others. But nope.

I truly hope Frontier do start providing all these needed and wanted pieces of data generated by the game - so much cool stuff could be done with it.

It's a small world dognosh. My R1 did its 200.74mph speed test at Woodbridge!

Yeah...I deleted it. It really is a fantastic setup. Something like has to be $10K at least.

Added rep to the op but just wanted to ask, was this a serious question? I only ask because Ive seen similar setups which are entirely home made and mostly from old junk.

Mean no disrespect to op even though it does have a very creative look about it...very impressive and very comfy by the looks of that sofa in the middle ^
