Why are the BIG ships so small ?

the best scale idea , is simply this : use the pilot's seat as model for human size, then compared...

i would need to screenshot a few ship's cokpit from debug cam, and try draw a lil man in front lol :p

look here, the white stickman is about a man size inside a hauler... :

Clipper is definitely more like the bridge of cruise liner, not sure why Iskariot is attempting to compare it to the flightdeck of an A380. You can see various consoles for crew members at the back of the bridge

Standing up on the bridge of the Clipper, when you look over the nose you realize the bridge is nearly 3 stories up, in the Type-9 you have a sense of vertigo in the DK2

Just stop it Driver! I'm really, really trying to hold off till consumer release. You're not helping my cause.

I'm assuming someone's already posted father ted?

Make sure you've got you FOV set correctly to have the scale correct, and not just super wide because it's the fashion.

With my 27" Monitor, and 24" from the screen FOV should be 53%, it makes a big differance with how you perceive scale.

Happy fun fact, the Anaconda is about the same size of this guy.

Me too. Got a DK1, holding out for the release. Hope it is soon. Cant... hold... out.... much............. longer. ;)

Mostly a depth perception problem, and a speed problem which makes large ships move way much smoother than many small agile planes can do in an atmosphere, making them appear smaller.

There's also a detail problem. Star Wars makes ships look absolutely huge by adding random but essential detail that helps gauge the scale:

But ships in ED are far too smooth to appear big. Still, they definitely are big.

Seriously, size is relative. And because everything is in First Person (cockpit view), unless you toggle the debug camera, you really don't get to compare yourself to other things very often.

When you are next to a capital ship or a station it feels pretty big to you?

Check out a ship, any ship including the Sidewinder in debug CV, focus on the cockpit. Okay, you won't see a pilot more is the pity but you will see the seat. Compare the size of the seat with the size of the vessel. Et voila! Even the Sidewinder is big.

It is an interesting discussion. I always thought that the Vipers in Battlestar Galactica were too small. I think Star Wars gets the scale just about right though. Scale in ED seems more like Star Wars than BG, all the ships are big.

Clipper bridge (apart from the front panels that are obviously shaped for two) looks wide enough that it could have had three seats at the front.

Does it look like it would hold 4-6 crew? (same as the old Imperial Trader, one or more may be an engineer not in the bridge though)

Because for a mere two-seater there sure is an awful lot of emptiness in there. I have seen a lot of bridges on ships and never saw enough space in any of them to park a few luxury cars.

Also the height of the canopy and the size of the windows distort any sense of scale.

Of course this is personal taste, but I do not like it at all. The design of the Clipper's nose gives it a goofy Donald Duck appearance. I would have preferred a more powerful, menacing hawkish look.

I think the question that needs to be asked is why a ship the same size as a super tanker (as mentioned in an earlier post ) can only carry 500 tonnes? must be mostly engine. Large ships 300 meters plus carry between 160K to 500K tonnes. Might change the game dynamics a little I thinks.
Ed Shipyard has the T9 engines (FS, PP, and thrusters) weighing in around 120 tonnes, this is close to the weight of the above mentioned sea going ships.

What on earth is the OP on about? Dude, view this game in VR. Anaconda is larger then a Supertanker (height) , the Eagle is the same size as a single aisle airliner.

The Python is huge when viewed in VR, and that ship is pretty small compared to the T9 & Conda.

I agree about maneuverability, many of these ships feel way too maneuverable, just put it down to thrust to weight ratio

And it holds 400T. Wth? A tanker is about 90kT.
