Why are we forced to an aggressive approach?

I have the feeling the "plot" is completely fixed and bolted to combat.

All stuff we got to interact with the Thargoids are new Weapons.

Even the "scanner" resulting in aggressive response and is only for being able to target subsystems.

The probes make them really aggro too... and with (until today) no additional defense, the explorative guys in their small and weak vessels out there have no good chance to collect tissue samples, which don't play a big role anyway.

And as in other threads mentioned, why there are only trade CGs resulting in weapons for the Pew Pew crowd.

I am a fan of the Pew Pew... and I killed a few Thargoids, but there wehre a cool opportunity missed for the first interactions.
We should have got the defenses at first and then a CG just to get tissue samples from them to develop weapons or some kind of that.

But FD are like: "Here you have a subsystem scanner and a rocket launcher, go and have fun with the aliens"

I see this in my Wing. Most of the guys are like: "Na, I don't want to fight them. I wait until we have a scientific approach." ...I have the feeling we are beyond that point of interaction. :S

I liked the mystery at the beginning - who shot first? are there good Thargoids and bad Thargoids in a civil war? What's the deal with the wrecked ships and body snatching? Has INRA been up to its "shenanigans" with Mycoid WMD? But I think it's gone on long enough to either build on the mystery or stamp it out and make it unambiguous. And there should be exciting rewards for taking part, a 2m credit bond is meh considering the outfitting, jumping, winging up, real risk of rebuy. Are the new mats any use? Do we get anything for finding all the crash sites/INRA sites? Or is it just "Maia has a new boss USS if you're interested"

I haven’t bothered again with goids as we only have aggressive ways to ‘interact’ with em. To be frank, I’d largely forgotten all about them.

I am just praying that a future phase of the plot will allow some more interesting and peaceful interaction.
We were promised that our actions would determine the outcome, and we have not yet had the opportunity to choose, so maybe the promise was on an individual level.
I'm not shooting them. If I never get to go somewhere with that choice, then I suspect I will vote with my feet

Well you can get Thargoid scan and wake data without fighting. You could also get tissue samples in an untanked AspX in the beginning but they've made them more aggressive. You can also safe the pods from them and deliver them through the new rescue system. It seems they did the work to provide a lot of new non-combat content but somehow screwed up in the last phase of making it rewarding and balance it out.

I hate to break it to folks, but this game is focused on combat.

It's the only non-optional part of the game, most content is aimed at it, and even the flight mechanics are completely centered around it. Maximum speeds and yaw that makes a WW1 aircraft look agile certainly aren't for realism.

I love this game so much and I am sure FD ist much more ambitious and passionate than other devs...

But I don't believe they ever had a second kind of "plot" at their hands, just for the case never ever nobody would shoot at the Thargoids. I think they knew that and took that for granted. And it's ok not to waste resources for a nearly impossible case. But then don't sell this to us like we have a choice. Make it fix, plan it out, but don't leave (the majority, as far I see in my Wing) the peaceful/scientific players out.

Let's wait and see how this develops... even while I like the Pew Pew and especially the boss like fights with fixed weapons, I hope for additional non aggressive interactions too.

The "pew" is the surest way to hit some target audience. Elite was always niche, but exploring is even more niche. ED goes for wider audience and tries to play safe with pew for more bang.

Because it's the easiest thing to do and implement. Very linear and basic. The product of 1-Dimensional Design.

Everything else would require depth-of-gameplay and modern multi-layered Game Design. Can't have that, not around here.

Human nature: if it's different from you, shoot it. If it's the same as you, shoot it as well. A peaceful approach would be wasted on the majority of players.

Just because it's the easiest approach and the most obvious doesn't mean that there aren't other options or that we are forced.

We are not forced to use all the new anti-thargoid weapons. Attacking Thargoids is a decision and nobody but the one pulling the trigger is responsible for that action.

I too, like the idea of 'friendly' interaction with Thargoids.
Possibly not tea and cake but I would at least like the idea of not antagonising them every time we interact with them.

Suggestion: a community goal that gave the players a choice as to what features were introduced in what order.
How about a binary CG where players were given the choice to either donate goods to A or B. Whichever reaches tier 8 first dictates the next step in the narrative. (or a few steps away if coding is already baked in)

for example: Palin is low on resources / time and so needs to focus on priorities that the galaxy deems important. Deliver x tonnes of cargo A if you want a particular development to be next on his list or deliver y tonnes of cargo B if you want a different development to be next.

It could be a sham in the end if a particular development on allows a superficial addition but it will allow FDev to at least gauge the temperature of the active commanders as to where they would like the eventual story to head.

This really should have been titled, "Why are we forced to an aggressive approach with Thargoids?", since the rest of the game clearly doesn't enforce this. And whilst it's true the recent focus on Thargoids appears to be combat orientated, there is still plenty around them that is not. For instance, you can find bases, explore them, mine for meta alloys, take part in Aegis CGs, embark on search and rescue, sell artefacts etc. etc. No one is being forced to shoot them. Hell, even if you get interdicted you can escape without the need for aggression.
