Why are we forced to an aggressive approach?

Exactly.

There's a good chance there's a more intelligent and thoughtful way to deal with the Thargoid threat. But to go down that route you will have to be more intelligent and think about what it could be.

And perhaps to give FD the benefit of the doubt that they'd make that an option.

To me it looks more like FD lures us into a war with Thargoids and the majority of players simple isn't interested in any other outcome.

Aye, that's a fair analysis.

Perhaps the most poignant point in all this, is that we can't assume the narrative would be deeper if we had avoided combat. It's not like combat doesn't have the potential to be deep, and let's face it: no-one ever said "look at how little content them pew-pewers get, they should try all this mad deep exploration lark".

A peaceful progression with the Thargs would inevitably pan out to be a few trade CGs.

Typical filthy casual can't even keep his drink in his gob! :D

As an explorer I still haven't seen any of these aliens you all seem so keen to talk to. What happened while I was gone? Did some infect the bubble with liberalism?

Better out than in! Incidentally, the same sentiment I apply to my ammunition.

You haven't seen those aliens because you haven't been around the relabelled CZs alien sites. You'll get plenty of repetition interaction if you come on down and experiment with the speeds you can drop into a PoI from ongoing alien narrative.

Nobody is forcing anybody to be aggressive. I haven't opened fire on them once, and even offered them a tasty treat.

I kinda like how AEGIS screwed us by first talking about research and all and then, like INRA, weaponize whatever results they get. Shows again that humans are the real aggressors here. People, and I am one of those, are against instant violence as a reaction to anything new, be it threatening or not, but government, military and triggerhappy cowboys don't agree and this is what we get. It's almost a parody...
Concerning gameplay I'd really like to have another approach too. Weapons to keep the arcade-shooter crowd happy, okay. I get that. But where's the science stuff for the people who play Elite because of immersion and the science in it?

Perhaps on the forums, which seems to be disproportionately filled with the timid; ................

You just had to use a derogatory term eh? Some of us are just not into the combat side because we suck at it big time and no matter how many times we get told to we are just not of the right mind-set to "git gud". :p

I can assure you now that is not one of my derogatory terms.

If I wanted to throw insult, I would have made a reference to hysterical grandads ;)

I think the people who don't like combat would make their case better if they didn't use condescending terms like "pew pew" or refer to combat as "mind numbing" and only appealing to juveniles. It's very easy to put things down you don't understand - I could easily characterise exploration as "jump and honk" or some other derogatory phrase. There is a lot more to combat than twitch reflexes - there's just (if not more) strategy in making a combat build as there is an exploration build.

But I'm not going to sit her justifying something that doesn't require it. I'd love to see more non-combat content, too, but I also think the beauty of ED is that you an indulge in a little bit of everything in the game and that all the elements enhance each other. If you think you are too good to take part in combat, well, you're only depriving yourself of the full experience.

Erm, I'm a very much non-casual combat player that's just come back from a few months of exploration; and I am calling out combat as mind numbing, and exploration as jump-honk-jump.

Some players are just desperate for their area(s) of interest to gain any depth.

Perhaps we'd progress the game further if we actually discussed the game rather than finding terms we can take offense to? :)

Just as a bit of a light-hearted, slightly tangential thingie....

Laura Dern (Star Wars' purple-haired Resistance leader Amilyn Holdo):
“Rian Johnson (the director) keeps telling this really embarrassing story about how when he got in the editing room – ...I do have weaponry in a scene.... – he literally heard me making sounds, ............, on camera you hear me going “‘pew, pew pew'”.

“I was so excited to be there, that I really did think I was at play”.

I haven’t bothered again with goids as we only have aggressive ways to ‘interact’ with em. To be frank, I’d largely forgotten all about them.

My interaction with goids is limited to ObsidianAnt videos, for a variety of reasons. I've yet to see anything resembling a story or a plot unfold.

Because FDEV lack the imagination and game design chops to give us anything more. But we were told we'd have ways to interact with them besides combat, so enjoy your research limpets. That's about as imaginative as FDEV gets apparently.

Yeah, I mean, they are using CGs to push the 'narrative' along (to it's pre-determined outcome). It's not exactly deep stuff is it.

So far, I've seen CGs, discussion on alien markings, Inra bases and Thargoid hunts. Only participated in one CG and shot at one Thargoid. Got a bit bored and went back to my home system.
I really don't know where this is going. Or if there is some end goal to all the combat and finds. Just wish there was something more.

After hearing all the talk about how there was going to be interesting choices that would affect the flow of the story and now seeing what's actually been delivered, I think it's time to put this guy:

into the same category as this guy:

And perhaps to give FD the benefit of the doubt that they'd make that an option.

What makes you think that was ever an option? Not only did we drive them off with the Mycoid virus in the past, but we've been systematically destroying their property for over a year in the form of UAs, UPs and Barnacles. If anything, we've shown we're the same aggressive apes we were in the past and reinforced the notion that we cannot be trusted as a whole. It's been pretty obvious since they announced 2.4 as The Return, that conflict was inevitable. The intro of the trailer pretty much said it all. Even before the trailer, human ships were being discovered that had been attacked and destroyed by the Thargoids. Before that, destroyed Thargoid Interceptors on planets. It's been been long common knowledge that the Pleiades is significant to the Thargoids for some reason. So what do we do? Start squatting in their backyard. Thinking peace was an option right out of the gate is an unrealistic expectation. All the signs were there on what 2.4 was leading up to.

To end this conflict with the Thargoids (which will likely get worse before it gets better), their trust will need to be earned the hard way. The need to be persuaded that we aren't like the Guardians. That means a united viewpoint as they likely see individuals as insignificant compared to the whole. Ironically, going that route appeases BOTH groups which is probably why it's playing out the way that it is.

What I'm curious about is why the Thargoids have so many similarities to Tholians. Was that intentional?

PS - Combat is likely "optional" at this point because all the new equipment isn't in place yet. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes once it's all been released.
