Why do people capitalise "Asp"?

A lot of people on this forum seem to capitalise "Asp" as "ASP". Why is this? Is it an acronym, and not just a name taken from that of a snake?

I have no idea.

For the same reason some folks type MAC instead of Mac I suppose. Apparently they didn't pay much attention in class. :D

I think most people, especially foreign english speakers, don't even know what an "asp" is. - In the german community I can't remember anyone besides me calling it asp instead of A S P.

I call it A S P. Separate letters :p

Plus an Asp is a snake and that is DeLacy's thing not Lakon's. Speaking of which, WHERE'S THE TYPE 8!? I'm just gunna start calling the ASP the new T8 :T

Well you, and all the others, are wrong. The Asp was originally a military vessel, then produced under license by Zorgon Peterson. Lakon acquired it only recently. It is named after the snake. It is not, and never has been, an acronym. It's spelled Asp. Just like an Apple Mac is a Mac, not a MAC (which is another thing that winds me up).

Edit: Thanks OP, for saving me from making my own thread, though I still managed to look like a petty little pedant on yours.

Adder is a ZPG ship. Fer de Lance is a ZPG ship. That said, I'm not clear on the current company history of Faulcon deLacy and whether they acquired Zorgon Peterson or not, and whether they sold them again later or not. Timelines with earlier games are confusing...

Hah, due to the way notifications (don't) work on this forum, after making the OP I forgot about it and only just saw this thread again :)

The "It's Lakon, snakes are Faulcon deLacy" thing doesn't hold water, because even if one doesn't know about past mergers etc. (I don't), the Adder is definitely a snake and definitely not FdL.

Fer de Lance is also a snake, which is another Zorgon Peterson*.

The Asp could have been Core Dynamics though.

*then again, Faulcon deLacy might actually own ZPG, just keeping it around as a different brand.

FD did mention the Asp was a design Lakon acquired and modified, much the same way as Faulcon deLacy acquired and redesigned the Cobra

The Cobra is actually sort of theirs as they licensed Cowell & MgRath to make it for them, before buying them out. They actually only have only two 'original' designs: Sidewinder and Viper.

The company is pretty shady; the dark heart of the Alliance in Reorte. But we've all been bought in with the pilots federation, as we get our free Sidewinders. I don't know if they own ZPG or if that has been retconned though.

Probably because many people aren't native english speakers, and the asp is a far less well known kind of snake than i.e. cobra, viper, python, anaconda and so on.

Personally I thought it was an acronym, too, before I learned there's also a snake called asp from this forum :)

I called it an A.S.P. instead of Asp, I assume because of ASP.Net programming comes to mind when I see those letters.
