Why do you play Elite?

Science model as presented by the stellar forge? Lore? Nostalgia?

Myself? Ships. The thing that draws me to sci-fi is the ships. I actually ignore sci-fi that doesn't feature ships. Why I struggle with Doctor Who.

I love the ships. They make a universe for me, and it won't surprise you to hear that not only is the Cobra Mk III my favourite ship in the game... But my favourite fantasy vehicle period.

I gave up drugs and TV, 3 years ago.

I play Elite because it’s a big sand box that lets me play the way I want to.

It models the entire Milky Way galaxy, has an acceptable to me pseudo physics based flight model, infrastructure of stations, platforms, and bases, a galactic wide market economy. Plus a lot of cool ships.

I just want to relax and pilot my space ship. Cruise around different systems, dock at different stations, land on planets, sight-see, find stuff, and trade enough to eke out a living and cover the cost of my ships. I’ve orbited Sol 68 times, and at this point in life pew pew has absolutely no appeal. But you don’t have to do combat if you don’t want to. I leave that to you youngsters, there’s certainly enough toys in the game to keep the warrior class engaged and contented. The players who seek the “Dangerous” in Elite can certainly find it.

I am, however, still stuck with pirates. Piracy seems to be a big part of Elite lore. But even pirates are manageable. I have a fast ship and only trade between high security systems. While interdictions don’t do my old ticker any good, they usually result in the Police showing up in the nick of time to dispatch the scoundrels. Still to be determined is the effect of the Thargoids. They are another big part of Elite lore, and I’m hoping interaction with them will be optional content. I’m not interested in fighting them, but I might trade with them. We’ll see what the future brings.

I play now and then cos I been waiting 3 years for it to get as good as they tell us it will be.

And each time small nice changes and big boring additions.

I am now waiting for the new planets.

When Life 2.0 is ready for release I'll give it a go; for the moment Elite Dangerous is a lot more entertaining. If they could just nerf the capitalism mechanic in Real Life, it might be less of a grind and feel more fullfilling.

Do you watch Syfy "The Expanse"? Great show. Lots of interesting ships.

I love the ships in this game. I wish they would spin off a single player game with the same ships.

I played FE2 when I was in high school, I love space sims and have an interest in astronomy. I played Freelancer, Wing Commander and the X games but they never filled the void left by Elite.

Also 1:1 scale model of the Milky Way, can't beat that really.

Nothing too lofty.
I think I enjoy Elite most because it doesn't make you the hero. Most games I've played you have to try pretty hard to remain an average Joe character just living his life while I enjoy the world the developers built.

Elite...well nowadays I still have try not to become some overpowered one man war-winning machine or shipping conglomerate, but the game itself isn't actively trying to make me that.

Being insignificant in a game world obviously isn't the most popular desire. For me though it's the definition of authenticity. I can dip around moving bulk freight in a T6 and say "yeah, one guy might actually do this IRL 1000 years from now".

Well when my wife asked me that question i blamed it on TJ.
After a few minutes she came back, "those are your initials!"
Busted!
Oh well! I play it because I enjoy it. Loved it in the early eighties and enjoy it even more now.
May even have to break down and get a MS gaming computer just for the VR and graphics....Mac, Linux and Xbox at the moment. It will be the only thing it's used for so this game is going to get expensive...it's worth it to me. Nice to escape RL sometimes,

Starry night bring me down
'Till I realize the moon
It seems so distant yet
I felt it pass right through
And I see what I see
A new world is over me
So I'll reach up to the sky
And pretend that I'm a
Spaceman in another place and time
I guess I'm lookin' for a brand new place
Is there a better life for me?
Subtle wind blow me gone
Let me rest upon your move
I trust I'll end up sleeping
Cradled in my doom
And I feel what I feel
I can't grasp what is not real
So I'll get myself real high
And imagine I'm a
Spaceman, in another place and time
I guess I'm lookin' for a brand new place
Is there a better life for me?
And I remember in my mind
They say I'm a daydreamin'
Is it all that it seems
Or am I all the things I'm looking for? Yeah
yeah, and I see what I see
A new world is over me
And I'll reach up to the sky
And imagine I'm a
Spaceman in another place and time
I guess I'm lookin' for a brand new place
I remember living in a different life
Is there a better life for me?

The freedom to play how I want and travel where I please in some pretty cool looking ships. I love the Evochron games, but no one really plays them, so it's hard to talk about them. Elite isn't perfected, but it's far more polished, too.

Personally, there's nothing that draws me in like a quality space sim.

The nostalgia of playing the new version of something that inspired me years ago, Elite has unique provenance. The scale and apparent accuracy of the astronomical content. The technical depth of the ships and the excellent flight models. The superb implementation of sounds and music. I could go on.
This forum, and the other player community resources also deserve a mention.

Short answer: VR!

Long answer:
Space & space ships in VR and all what we can do in those ships...
- Mining in beautiful, light-flooded planetary rings, the sun(s) sometimes covered by rocks, a huge gas giant hanging over me, taking 1\3 of the visual field ... not just on my monitor, but “me beeing there”
- Exploring and descending to foreign planets, driving around, standing on an alien mountain gazing over an endless plain - the whole galaxy as a background - beeing there myself (as much as I ever can hope for, at least).
- Joining in fierce combat scenarios, one-on-one or in a combat zone fur ball, me litterally inbetween all those ships, using my situational awareness to spot the current enemy, the highest threat or simply my next target - with some hefty metal music to accompany the figth, bringing me into an actual flow experience.
- Using not only a VR headset for all of this, but also a complete control environment with HOTAS and pedals, which makes flying my ships/driving the SRV a “whole body experience”. Tremendously satisfying!

I also love the game for itself. *)
But honestly, without its VR support, I probably would have stopped playing it quite a while ago.
Due to VR, it is almost (not entirely, as I also play some strategy and city builder games **) ) the only game I play these days.

*) there are many other VR games on the market, but I still stick to ED
**) namely Civ VI, Stellaris and Cities Skylines
