Why do you play Elite?

I saw something about it before it released and was courious so I bought it and played it. Still have a good time playing it so I'm still playing it.

... Theres really not a lot to it :D

Why do I play? Come on man, it's a spaceship game! :D

While I do prefer my more realistic flight sims at times, I still get a grin out of playing this game. And with the recent announcements concerning next year, I am anxiously looking forward to the coming releases.

Ever forward FD. :)

For me it's space-station docking and launching in VR... There's just something majestic about the whole process when you have a HOTAS or Dual Stick beast with 6DOF at your fingertips...

One of the key things is the feeling of having total mastery over an enormous ship which basically amounts to a block of metal and a bunch of rockets and performing a delicate manoeuvre with grace and finesse. Hard to put in to words, exactly.

What does that mean? They already have build a FPS using the Cobra engine. As they mentioned, the 'walking' part isn't the issue. The gameplay is.

Have they built a multiplayer FPS game before? Really? They certainly have single player games but multiplayer (FPS) is a whole different thing.

Because it doesn't funnel you into a specific type of game play, it's fun, the graphics are incredible and VR is simply unreal. In some game of the same price range, you're required to follow along the storyline with some brief excursions from it, but it becomes much like playing an 18 hole course but only playing the 1st hole over and over until you get the score you want, then going to the next hole. In ED, don't even have to play golf on the course, you can drive around tearing up the turf or simply leave the course and explore the rest of the area. It's about killing other ships for money, hauling cargo, exploring, mining, all or none of that - at whatever second you decide to make it about all or none of that.

I'll find a golden earning situation and run it for awhile, but I'll leave it because I don't want to reduce the game experience to that small aspect. I often go back when I shouldn't, so I'll give the find away to a lot of people so it basically takes away my option to camp there. Then I'll go build a rep elsewhere and look for opportunities there. Those times when you find the golden needle in the haystack are worth all the searching.

Many other games I've played have been concluded in just a few hours of play. I've actually invested into my setup solely on the prospect of playing this game (and other flight and space sims).

I play to pretend I'm a some guy in the future making a living in the space age. Flying spaceships in our own real 1:1 galaxy no less. Major plus.

Once they implement the rest of the planets and add some exploration content and gameplay I'll leave the bubble for good and never look back. Looking forward (well, dreaming of...) to exploring strange new worlds and meeting distant civilizations.

Would also love some smuggling gameplay with real reward vs risk and consequences.

Because the first movie I recall seeing was Star Trek The Motion Picture. I was 4 years old. I thought for sure that I was going to be able to go space and travel the stars. When I got a little older I soon realized that would not be possible. Honestly I was devastated. So I used video games and movies to fill that hole. In all that I had never even heard of Elite Dangerous growing up. How I past it up is beyond me. The first time I played Elite was on Xbox One. I got it on sale for $19 and some change and was completely blown away. I'm not going to go into how much more I've spent since then.[wacky] Elite has helped heal a sore spot in a little boys heart and that's why I play. Thank you Frontier.

400,000,000 stars trillions of planets + a little imagination = 1 happy overgrown kid [yesnod]

I used to play Elite on my BBC Master 128, about 31 years ago. I got quite good at it and I always imagined I was flying my Cobra Mk III across the unfriendly spaceways, charting my own course. I’d be dispatching wings of pirates and the thought occurred to me, that wouldn’t it be cool if those other spaceships were other players around the world...

... and then it happened.

Have they built a multiplayer FPS game before? Really? They certainly have single player games but multiplayer (FPS) is a whole different thing.

This is way above my knowledge level, but if the game already has a multiplayer infrastructure, does it matter? Honest question as I know peanuts about it.

it is quite an issue in vr.

True, but that is a not a coding issue but a conceptual problem. Spacelegs and VR (AFAIK) will only properly work together in zero-G.

To chill and enjoy space commander's life which is pure escapism for me from my life. Also ED universe is interesting, ever changing and random nature of the game gives something to do and does not feel hugely scripted or intended.

I recognise it is something that many exactly not like in ED but well that's how it goes.

Considering that ships move with 800 - 900 m/s max locally while networked with other players avatars jumping around really does not bother me at all.

I mean, both ships and SRVs have way more complicated mechanisms to transfer data about over network than simple avatars with max shooting one gun.

Why?

Because I like space stuff.
I backed the KS, and I'm determined to get every penny's worth of my LEP out of it before the servers get turned off.
I played the original on an Amiga 1200 68060.
It's fun when it's not doing my head in.
Oh, and because I finished the DS3 Ringed City DLC and don't have anyting better to do right now...

...I digress [where is it]

I am convinced that 4 non Blondes play this game...

Because I get to be a spaceman. Flying a spaceship. In space.

Starry night bring me down
'Till I realize the moon
It seems so distant yet
I felt it pass right through
And I see what I see
A new world is over me
So I'll reach up to the sky
And pretend that I'm a
Spaceman in another place and time
I guess I'm lookin' for a brand new place
Is there a better life for me?
Subtle wind blow me gone
Let me rest upon your move
I trust I'll end up sleeping
Cradled in my doom
And I feel what I feel
I can't grasp what is not real
So I'll get myself real high
And imagine I'm a
Spaceman, in another place and time
I guess I'm lookin' for a brand new place
Is there a better life for me?
And I remember in my mind
They say I'm a daydreamin'
Is it all that it seems
Or am I all the things I'm looking for? Yeah
yeah, and I see what I see
A new world is over me
And I'll reach up to the sky
And imagine I'm a
Spaceman in another place and time
I guess I'm lookin' for a brand new place
I remember living in a different life
Is there a better life for me?
