Why does everyone call ED a space flight sim?

The reason ED is called a space simulator is because "Commercially Developed Imaginary Representation Of The Future From The Mind Of A Terrestrial Bound Human Being" was too long to put on the box label.

If ED is a space simulator, so is Asteroids and Space Invaders!

You keep using whatever word you wish. At this point you're arguing semantics instead of the merit of the ED simulation.

We can all use whatever words we wish. The only reason this thread exists is some get upset about other people using the "wrong" one.

Not that many, only about 3735928559 times..

(convert it to hexadecimal)

Code:
$ echo 'ibase=10;obase=16;[B]3735928559[/B]' | bc
[B]DEADBEEF[/B]

Awesome. We were doing some work on some real-time systems recently, and one of the engineers had never heard of using this as a method to make hex stand out for debugging porpoises.

I do believe there to be a logical fallacy in your sighting of a logical fallacy. The idea of flying space ships is quite realistic. While it is true that modern astronauts, and even those of previous decades, did and do rely on computer control systems to get them where they’re going, these can, and have been, overridden by manual controls when warranted.

Armstrong did it to put the LEM down on the moon because the computer systems were overloaded. Manual dockings have happened at the ISS due to system faults, and manual operation is a regular and routine part of astronaut training because equipment can and does fail.

Space Combat.. a bit on the hokey side, sure, but to say it is unrealistic? That’s a stretch.

As a realistic simulation, Elite doesn’t make the cut. Try Take On Mars for realistic simulation. Or because it is pretty cool and fun.

I already said it's not a realistic simulation 13 pages ago ;)

Yep, just that... a simulation since only just over 500 people have actually been in space. Just a game of what might be sometime in the very distant future providing we survive as a species to see it.

Words have meanings. Calling Elite Dangerous a "space sim" is akin to calling Rocket League a "driving sim".

Yes, words have meaning. And the meaning of space sim is a game like Elite Dangerous. Read it up on wikipedia, the gaming media or somewhere else. It's the name of the genre.

The gaming media is a bunch of barely-literate idiots, and wikipedia isn't a reliable source of information.

Edit: still, even if the industry uses "space sim" to describe it, doesn't necessarily make Elite Dangerous a proper "space simulation". Category != adjective.

As said above, I agree that Elite isn't a realistic simulation. However, the term space sim was already used for games like Elite before 'proper space simulations' even existed.

Except the original argument was never if the "Space sim" genre existed, or the merits of its naming semantics.

The OP was asking if ED was a "simulation" or not, since the "simulation" argument is used often to enforce boring game mechanics.
And no, it's not a "Simulation" even if it belongs to the "space sim" genre. It's a game with poorly designed mechanics.

I think if I had to actually label what ED is it would have to be "Futuristic Space Game" because all 3 words pretty much satisfy what it is. Futuristic since it is something we have no idea of other than dreams. Space because we know it's there and.. umm Star Trek. And Game because it's exactly that. But what ever you wanna call it is fine. I call it fun.
