Why does everyone call ED a space flight sim?

Speed limit still exist.

Oh, and you can't orbit any celestial object.

"Real physics" yeah.

Dude, you are ALWAYS orbiting. Orbiting is why the speed limit exists. The Nav beacon orbits the sun, the planets orbit the sun, the stations orbits the planets. Every single little marker you drop out of supercruise into is orbiting something it just doesn't look like it.

And the speed limit is the maximum speed your ship can achive while using thrusters to counteract the Gravity - Centrifuge inbalance caused by you traveling x00m/s faster than the orbital speed.

Your speed is always relative. Orbital physics exist, it just the space ships of 3300 deal with them automatically. If you want to mess with orbits go play KSP

A few of us tried to explain this yesterday evening, but without much success. Honestly it's like arguing with a brick wall. Still, good luck with it, but I suspect you'll be ending up either teaching a class on orbital mechanics or banging your head against the afore mentioned wall.

Some folks would rather complain than understand the reasons.

Spacesim. Video game genre, involving piloting spaceships. Usually involves lasers and hyperspace.

Does not include KSP nor Orbiter.

Has never been about simulation.

Stop chewing on a dead horse.

I like chewing dead horse. When properly cooked.

So, let's tl;dr this 20 pages of glorious idiocy....

  • It is claimed that ED is "not a sim" because it lacks true Newtonian mechanics, has speed limits etc.
  • It is then pointed out that most of those objections are spurious because most of the things cited are a feature of flight assist.
  • "But the speed limits!"
  • Yeah, right, turning flight assist off doesn't mean there's no Flight Control Laws in the ships fly-by-wire system, just that only a minimal set are enforced. (for technical and gameplay reasons)
  • "That's just handwavium!"
  • No it's not. It's actually - you know - simulated. Your thrusters fire to make it happen and everything.
  • But that's stupid. Nobody would design a spaceship flight control system like that!
  • In your opinion. So what? Doesn't change the fact that it IS the design simulated - quite accurately - in ED.
  • Thread devolves into the objectors making ever-more-elaborate logical pretzels in a futilke effort to evade this truth and "prove" that ED can't "be a sim" because what it is simulating is somehow "wrong." (translation: they don't like it)

It's a sim. Objecting to what it simulates doesn't make it less so.

So you would be rather orbit a 1G planet instead?

In games like KSP and in Pioneer spent a LOT of time messing with orbits.

Its really fun when you orbit a planet at very low altitude [yesnod].
A shame we can't do this on Elite.

Well you have to admire the OP, creates a thread that everyone knows will become toxic, then never posts to the thread again. Or in other words, throws a hand grenade into the forum, sits back and watches the mayhem he caused.

A bit like offline or the LEP.

Mostly because it is. Elite basically invented the space sim genre, it would be strange if it isn't what it is.

Have you ever played a racing, combat or flight sim?

Anyway, you can't simulate something that doesn't exist. To have a sim you need a real-world vehicle to compare your simulation against for accuracy.
