Why does everyone call ED a space flight sim?

It is perfectly obvious that we Commanders are A.I. Robots, or and best Cyborgs. Why else would we need to be represented as a 'Holo-Me'. A.I. won that war, and formed the Pilots Federation. That is the long term future of our species, integration with the technology that will soon out -pace us.

There are a lot players who think they are flying a super complex spaceship...

[haha]

For me Elite is the 3D future version of

Straying a bit off topic, but it's amazing that game is almost 40 years old. I remember you could go to a bookstore1 and buy a book1 that described strategies for clearing the fields. You've come a long way, baby2.

1 The younglings might want to Google what these words mean
2 That album is 20 years old ... gawd I feel old

When the music that shaped your life gets airtime on an "oldies" channel, you've grown up....

But when they are played as "classics" you might as well admit it, you're old.

That game, Asteroids, is best played on either an oscilloscope or one of those 1970s radar displays.
Damn but now I feel old. I remember a time when we really hadn't landed on the moon.

The Autolpilot was invented in 1920, look at the tech we now have in 2018... People banging on about realism in a space sim set in 3304

So physics laws are going to change in future, in 3034 there is going to be drag in vacuum/space that will stop moving ship/floating object after few hundred meters.

Damn Thanos, he changed everything!

There’s no drag. The reverse thrusters fire after a boost to slow a ship down I’m pretty sure.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Turn off your fly-by-wire, go FA-off, then drift forever. with FA on your ship is doing stuff automatically - you can even see the thrusters firing to do it...

By all means argue for more fidelity in the flight model where there genuinely is a deficiency. But where there isn't, don't manufacture one out of whole cloth and obvious rubbish.

Except it still happens with FA off. It's a gameplay/network restriction. But certainly not realistic and certainly not "Space Flight Sim" accurate. Heck Kerbal is more of a space flight sim than this. This is Planes In Space.

That being said, not trying to be negative, just objective. I absolutely love Elite and the flight model so, so much. But I can't just deny reality with the lack of Newtonian flight and call it realistic or "sim" worthy.

*Gets back in cockpit for another 1000 hours*

I like this alot, actually. Would explain everything being networked and super restricted in regards to the PF - would also explain re-buys instead of an actual death mechanic.

Still not sure why Galnet has the Thargoid as a logo though.

Oh you are so limited!
Ok, go bump floating container with your ship and observe the DRAG.
Maybe free floating wrecks/containers/materials have reverse thrusters too Einstain.
It's the physics engine that is not simulating space.
Than report back!

Actually the physics engine works pretty accurate, they even simulate gravity accurately. In some cases there are additional rules on top of it to allow 'better' gameplay.

"The space flight simulator game is rubbish because cannisters don't drift off forever"

I'm waiting for planets and moons stop orbiting/rotating due to drag! ;p

I had enough fun, it's a g game, it's fun so realism doesn't matter that much to go into details.
20 years ago Call of duty would be called mil-sim, now it's arcade game, same is in space games or sims as you call it.....until something more profined comes out regarding realism i guess it can be called space sim (space flight sim not so much).
At the end it doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it!
