Why have the Black Hole effects been REMOVED? Stop trashing all the good work!

i don't wanna be optimistic, but maybe they are re-working the effect and adapt it for a closer distance view:
Maybe FD will allow us to go near BH in next patches...

And while they're at it, they could try to improve lensing so that the starfield in the background is actually taken into account, and to ditch that artificial sphere of dots around the BH coming out of nowhere, which was always looking pretty cheap to me.

Anyway. I don't think that they suddenly decided to go full "hardcore sim" on this one. It is much more likely that something was simply screwed up after adding lensing effect to neutron stars. To allow us to fly closer to dormant black holes without dropping from SC and overheating might be more complicated to do than to tweak visuals.

There was previously a bug were they were too exaggerate so have been balanced to something more realistic. We may take a look and exaggerate them a bit.

Thanks

Michael
No, dont exaggerate them. Realistic is better even if they became invisible and there is nothing cool to see left. (sarcasm)

Who is making these decisions? I can tell it is not the Art Director.

I PM'd Michael Brooks about the lensing effects and this was his response:

Hopefully they will decide to increase the effects again, but at least we know now.

Hmmm... thanks for letting us know, I'm not convinced they were balanced, i'm collating some examples, so far the mass of the black hole does not seem to effect the size of the 'effect' which is still on par with a neutron star.

Ah, so it was intentional. If only they would explain now why aren't we allowed to come closer to dormant stellar black holes (realistically, this should be possible), so that we can admire some scenery.

I really hope that the do this as well. I want to be in awe of black holes.

You want something exciting? Sorry you have to look somewhere else. Apparently FD want everything to be boring, dull and realistic.

A little harsh. I think they will change it after seeing this reaction from explorers.
Maybe but i'm really getting frustrated with all this. They make the Nebulas looking like crab, the black holes are the same more or less. Neutron stars are white dots and you cant tell what is it unless you read the discription that tell you this is Neutron star. I dont want to see what Pulsars will look like, white dots i guess. Maybe it is realistic but is also lazy because this is video game, it should use the visuals better than this. Even documentary movies with the crapy cg on tv have more exciting and imaginitive visuals.

I do agree they should dramatize everything, however I appreciate that it can be difficult for them to decide between realism and artistic beauty because they get yelled at by the other side no matter which path they choose.

The effect was originally incorrectly scaled based on the objects mass, this was made more realistic in its scale some time ago. We'll take a look to see if we should exaggerate the effect to make it more noticeable.

Michael
Good to hear.

BTW, what was wrong with the scaling by object mass? Shouldn't that be the way to go - maybe not exponential scaling but some scaling anyway?

I suspect I'm being a pest and this subject is taboo, but...
Anything in the pipeline, or even possible ideas board about accretion disks and other active black hole effects?

Why no one is yeling at them about the Nebulas being so bright and visible? In reallity they're way more faint almost invisibble unless captured with ridiculous exposure. Because they look cool as f..k! If we dont count that FD nerf the resolution and now they look like pixelated blobs.

Hi Michael,

I really appreciate you coming here to explain, jumping to or a close flyby used to be scary as it should I think, the art work done here is really really good and I think may well have sold a few copies of ED in the process!

The 'bubble' effect has gone which used to help navigate close to black holes, I've been looking at different mass holes and they are quite underwhelming now. If we could tweak it back somewhat you would gain a lot of happy campers. Lets have them looking DANGEROUS again ;)

Cheers

Nutter
