Why I need a Clipper

This is my current setup, not finished obviously, learning to fly with it. Use it for gathering mats in haz rez, as it is takes anacondas and such down very fast so no problem with weak shields if not attacking wings. After some practice i will go for fixed frags. I like it so far, fun ship.
Like cockpit more than cutter's, not so much glare.

Clipper is a really nice ship to pilot.

If you can set it up to do what you want to do in it, buy one and enjoy it.

If you want a medium ship though... Just buy a medium ship.

I have a piracy clipper. It is fantastic fun. It does have limitations, but I know what they are, and accept that.

The vertical thrusts are not great is its biggest drawback, which means you have to work harder to get the locks on for drive disablement.

It is a large ship, which takes outposts off the table for its use... Mainly this effects selling in my role for it. But i can always land at a base and transfer cargo to a trade python etc to take it there, so its negatable. And this is an issue that affects all large ships, so its not exactly game breaking.

It's not that I want a medium ship, I want Salome's ship, Seven Veils
Well any pile of wreckage would cover you for that (Not read story, but was it not destroyed by a certain beseiger/mr potter.)

Funnys aside, i only mentioned the size as it is one of the commonest complaints about the clipper, which I do not hold with as an issue personnaly.

And what to do with it. I have just finished the two Salome books about Elite by Drew Wagar. Reclamation and Premonition are both absolutely excellent. Huge respect to Drew for bringing alive the Elite universe, fleshing out the lore and background.

Problem is, our hero Salome is closely linked with her Imperial Clipper. But I've never bought this ship despite having the rank to do so - I was grinding for the Cutter.

Anyhow, what is the best way to use the Clipper? As an all purpose ship, like a Python or Krait? I've heard it excels at mining? Is it good at PvP?

If so could anyone suggest good builds?

And now I need to read more Elite fiction, but the bar has been set incredibly high!

I used mine mostly for DeepCore mining. It's an absolute marvel to fly one at 640m/s in an asteroid field

It makes a very fine exploration vessel! The handling of it is superb, and the cockpit view is both luxurious and expansive.

The only downside is that with the small fuel tank, you'll need to keep a very close eye on fuel consumption and scoop if not every time, then very regularly. The maximum jump range is lower than you would get with a finely tuned AspX or a Jumpaconda, but I get 52ly out of mine even without every light-weight mod I can think of at G5 :) This makes it less suitable for poking around at the very extreme edges of the galaxy, but not impossible.

I don't regret getting my Clipper at all, there is something majestic about seeing it out in the black!

As others have said, it isn't really "the best" at anything, but it's "pretty good" at a lot of things.

IIRC, no other ship with similar cargo capacity is as fast: it's a light freighter with a fighter's performance (and without the Cutter's drift issues).

It's also one of the only two ships in ED which can fit a fuelscoop 2 sizes larger than the FSD, allowing for very fast scooping (the T9 is the other). With a decent fueltank added, it becomes a good neutron-jumper, as it can jump until its fuel runs out and then refuel quickly. I took one to Colonia with a 7B fuelscoop and an extra tank in the size 6 slot.

The Clipper is not great for PvP due the stupid placement of it's large hardpoints which makes it almost impossible to land shots with fixed weapons. For PvP, the only viable weapons are gimballed frags which aren't all that great when fighting a medium or small ship.

However, the Clipper does excel as a player pirating ship. With gimballed frags in the large hardpoints, a LR super pen rail gun and a Grom bomb, there are few traders that can escape from it.
Here's a pirating build for you.

The Clipper was made for Piracy and Smuggling. Anyone tries to chase you? You just hit the gas and leave them in the dust.

@NCFCpaul
For doing haz res and CZ's with the Reapers in Colonia, this would be an excellent build.

question - why 3 incendiary frags? and why overcharged?

i used to run frag cobras, couriers, FAS and python pve - courier for exampel with 1 incendiary, 1 corrosive, 1 without special (all ammo increased).
i'm pretty sure i can learn something from your build.

It's an awesome pirate ship. Plenty of cargo space, and speed to get away from the cops. Not a bad miner, either, especially if you're after unlock items in small quantity or cores. No NPC can touch it in terms of speed.

PvP wise, its mostly irrelevant these days. With awful hardpoint convergence, it's usually pretty reliant on gimbals, so the plasma meta is out of the question unless you get creative. It's a huge target, too, and the shields aren't all that great. It's no longer the top dog speed wise, either. The Mamba has superior acceleration, and doesn't have much trouble running them down. It's been a long time since I've seen a clipper, let alone one that's a real serious threat. Lotta old Clipper guys have moved on to the Mamba by now.

I'm sure there's a few people who can still make use of it in PvP, but against a skilled pilot in a meta FDL, you're probably gonna get tore up. I might give it a try again soon, just for meme purposes. I've got plenty of credits to burn these days.

It's still a fantastic gank boat, if you're into that sort of thing. Then again, a ship doesn't have to be all that great to take out a paper plane.
