Ships Why im beginning to hate the Mandalay

Try the Diamondback Explorer. Third-largest jump range (second before the Mandalay was introduced), but at the cost of very restricted module slots. It's still a very fun ship to explore with. The pre-engineered SCO FSD makes its jump range awesome.

I doubt they will "fix" the older ships' SCO FSD stabilization. There's no incentive for them to do it. The newer ships must be better.
Agree. And in the unlikely event that they do, I would expect them to create a stabilization module. We’ll need bulldozers for the salt if they do.

How?
I removed the AFMU, limpets and everything, engineered all the rest to the MAX and still cannot get 70ly .... so how exactly are you getting 80 ly with all the default stuff?

... paper plane :D.

Yeah, I know, it's an exploration ship. Right? RIGHT? Not a combat ship my ass :D!

I love the Mandalay, and yes, maybe it is too good. Or maybe not. I use one as my primary PP / mission runner, and I love it. It's reasonably well proteced and brings some nasty weapons, and still carries 80t of cargo (64 when I install a scoop). The only real flaw I found with it is that it twitches like crazy during interdictions to the point that I actually lost interdictions against more nimble NPC ships (me being the one interdicting).

Its not that paper compared to some ive flown! :ROFLMAO:

Yes, but you said "I haven't downgraded anything, have 2 SRVs, AMFU, repair limpets, the kitchen sink and it still does over 80LYs," ... so I assumed you have not CHANGED ANYTHING ... but according to your link of course you have, you removed hardpoints, added Guardian Booster etc. -- so, yeah.
I meant when I bought the Mandalay (with arx), the stock jump range was I think 39ly or so ..., pretty low. I had to do 100+ hours of tedious engineering grind to achieve 69ly which is what I have. That was extremely BORING, as I laid out here:

Its an exploration ship so i never need guns.
Apology's if you misinterpreted my meaning, many folks (including myself) will downgrade modules (my Anaconda has a 6A power plant instead of an 8A) to obtain more jump range, this is what i mean by downgrading.
FSD Booster and lightweight stuff are pretty much common in all my exploration builds but ive been here a while and have plenty of engineering materials along with CG modules etc.

Got to say, I'm a bit mystified myself...

I just got a Mandalay, as far as I can tell it's lighter than the ones linked here and yet I'm not getting quite the jump range.

Must be doing something very dumb. Perhaps someone can tell me what!

Hasn't got a name yet!

Edit: Just got back from a long exploration trip and busy getting acquainted with all the new stuff (Python Mk II and Mandalay). Agree that they are very - maybe too - good, but lots of fun. And boy has engineering got easy!

Your using a standard FSD on that build not an SCO or the improved version.

Told you I was being dumb! The actual ship does have the SCO, I was just recreating it on Coriolis...

Still 4 or 5 Ly down on your build... Still, many thanks for spotting the dumb mistake :)

Its not dumb, i spent weeks trying to work out why a ship i built wasn't the same as my build on EDSY, turned out i hadn't actually fully lightweight'ed the sensor, made a huge difference but couldn't spot it for peanuts.

Following these principles:
  1. SCO FSD maximally engineered for increased range + mass manager. Or, alternatively, get yourself the pre-engineered one (which is even better).
  2. Use a Guardian FSD Booster. (Maybe this is what you are missing?)
  3. Optimize the ship's weight.
The first two are trivial (it only requires work to get the necessary materials). It's that third one where all the optimization kicks in.

You can optimize the ship's weight to large extents without having to resort to any engineering: Lightweight hull, undersized (A-grade) power plant, all other core modules D-rated (except the FSD, of course). Incidentally, the AFMU and the fuel scoop don't matter because they don't have any weight, so they are freebies.

You can get a few more lightyears by engineering the life support module and sensors for lightweight.

This was actually my concern. Why are all the new "Odyssey" ships clearly boosted compared to the older fleet? Whether it's the crazy FSD ranges or the agility of the ships, it feels like it's incentivizing people to buy Odyssey at the expense of a balanced experience.

As a middle ground, players should be able to upgrade their "legacy" ship to what appears to be more advanced and newer FSD tech provided on these Odyssey ships at some in-game credit cost through some specific engineering service maybe like retrofitting, to make things plausible.

Am I missing something?
Well yes...but, new ships do 3 things at once:
1. Lure back old players who quit.
2. Make brighter "game's breathe".
3. ARX spending on new ships.

That's why those new ships are here and for long.
P.S. Didn't see it yet, I'm in the Void for 2 years soon and I still use my trusted Anaconda, despite I have full carrier of the toys with me.

You need the pre-engineered sco drive and guardian booster module.

Well, this should do... :D

It's a standard SCO self engineered. I'll go finish building it and see how it comes out.

Thanks everybody for your help.

Its just too good.
The past month ive taken her on a mini galactic inner (ish) circumnavigation, round Hawkings, past Drymans, across into Arcadian/Newtons and up to beagle.
Now ive past through Formorian, H Delta, Conduit and currently mapping some systems in Outer Arm.
Its too easy.

I haven't downgraded anything, have 2 SRVs, AMFU, repair limpets, the kitchen sink and it still does over 80LYs, ive landed on an 8G like it was Heathrow, the thing is just incredible.
So incredible its boring.

Im thinking of cutting the trip short, taking a break in Colonia and heading back to the bubble to grab my AspEx or even the Python, anything that actually makes it a little more exciting.

The Mandy, what a machine but .........

The galaxy has become far too small. It holds no challenges any more. Where do you want to be in a giffy? Take a Mandalay. Got seriously damaged? A DSSA carrier is a jump away. Something definitely has died for me.

Quick note:

the 2077.4 tons optimized mass from some posts above are for a Titan Drive Component SCO Class 5
(with preengineered increased range and faster boot sequence and manually added mass manager experimental).
The additional percentage of optimal mass is 76.8 % for such an engineered FSD,
in case anyone wants to put the numbers on a non class 5 into coriolis.
