Why is aliasing so bad in Odyssey? I am embarrassed to share the Panther videos to my friends because the aliasing is so crazy.

...but please, first fix the flickering shadows!!!
DLDSR or similar can fix AA.
But there is no good solution for these atrocious shadows! :-/
So much this. Every planet now in the best lighting conditions for excellent ambiance near the terminator is garbage. Absolute hideous garbage that is embarassing to show to other people. Entire mountain shadows appear and disappear depending on head position and shadows that should be well inside the LOD range clipped out just a few feet in front of your face. It's disgusting because early Ody visuals were fantastic. Then they were broken, and simply shoulder-shrugged away and left as-is. It's sad.

Dispite a 3080ti I simply can't get it to hold 60FPS in settlements and foot CZs with any supersampling given a 4K base resolution. It's almost possible but I'll hit some settlements where the frames drop to the 50's and that just makes it visual hell for me with all the skipped frames and stutters. I have to just live with the horrible AA.

Did you try FXAA x1.0? It works for me, and looks better than the default SMAA.

FXAA x1.25 looks even better but framerate dips on-foot.

I might need to see specifically what you are referring to with those? I don't have any SS turned on right now.

Some of the setting being tossed out are not really familiar to me.

Under options > graphics > quality, this:

I posted example pictures showcasing the difference in this post.

I'm usually running videos on the side or so. If I push supersampling up to 1.5x, other GPU-accelerated stuff starts to fail (understandably, 5760x2400 is hard to run.) I'd like to see a proper AA solution.

FXAA x1.0 isn't working for you?

With a 3080 Ti your best bet is to enable DLDSR 1.78x in the NVIDIA control panel, with 50-100% smoothness (adjust to taste), and use the resolution that exposes in game (should be 5120*2880 on a native 4k display), then use sub-1.0x multipliers of in-game supersampling to get the performance back where you want it (try 0.65x to start). Add in-game SMAA or FXAA, as desired for another smoothing pass.

You will need to live with a lot of aliasing or a very soft image, but if you're tolerant of the latter, you can get the former under control. It will never be great on your GPU, but there is surely room for improvement.

I understand that for some reason FXAA is maligned, but hey, I'm just reporting what I'm seeing.
I gave that a whirl. Looked reasonable in the station. As soon as I took off I hated it :( I didn't like the way the yellow motion lines were jiggling around
7900XTX and 9800X3D, when I logged back into elite I had a bit of a giggle as I saw 900fps in open space at 1440p everything on ultra
Holy heck! I got the same gear but at 1440 ultra wide, and seem to struggle to maintain 120!

I've just enabled 'off' and supersample 1.5 with a lock on 90fps - it dips below that in station ad still has some jaggies

The 900fps was before I turned on SS ;) But yeh, your ultrawide is hurting you a little, especially with SS, it's making those few extra pixels into quite a few more extra pixels, but yeh, in busy stations I'm dropping below 100 a little, same on planets. It's not that consistent, some places just seem better optimised, sometimes I get some chugging. I haven't really spent much time refining things yet, 2x is notably better on the AA than 1.5x, I still have some experimenting to do. I expect there are some detail settings that I don't care about, I want to try to stick with 2x and get the minimum on poorly optimised planets up too. I'll take a screenshot for you later, you can see what you think.

Here are a couple of shots with my current settings, native 1440p, 2x SS, AA off, everything maxed. Menu screen and sitting in station. 200fps basically in high poly environments (FPS counter shown bottom left), though like I say I do get some chugging at some places. I dunno if it's worth mentioning, but all my ancillaries are also pretty much the best, tomahawk X870, low latency ram, Sapphire XTX which typically test a couple of % higher than others, I really went to town earlier this year with the upgrades :D I'm not overclocking though. Plus you are on a higher resolution even if not hugely. o7

That stream was years ago though. When there's better tech that's easy to implement they should do it. I think now Fdev prioritizes other features.

A general graphics upgrade is overdue. This might be included with a new planet type DLC. Because it requires new tech for water, lava, magma, forests, clouds, rain etc.
t's a shame about the AA as it tarnishes the title quite a bit, although in my case, I'm lucky enough to have an RTX50 and the truth is it's almost imperceptible. I have the resolution set to 6k via DSR factor in the Nvidia drivers and all the possible image enhancements... and it certainly looks spectacular, but not everyone can or wants to spend a significant amount on a computer with these characteristics. I think it should incorporate DLSS technology or the latest FSR (not the one it currently incorporates which is horrible), but of course, I don't know if that engine is so limited, due to budget I don't think so, because even "competition" from small studios are incorporating it. It would be a magnificent addition, since it would not only improve the visuals, but it would less heavy in fps in case they incorporate clouds, rain or something similar in the future, even in the form of DLC, which I would buy without hesitation to accompany these wonderful ships that we have and that are yet to come.

There will be ships for ARXX and paint jobs.

Looked.

Because that was from before the engine changes that came with Odyssey.
I started Elite after Odyssey, and it's a shame it had that problem, and it looked better before, although I like the settlement theme, in fact in the last CG I did more "ground" combat than ship combat, which I already do a lot for other types of missions. But I didn't know that the AA would get worse after ED, and that the old video is limited to the maximum resolution of YouTube and not what the user actually watch.. In my computer i watch much better at 6k. In any case, it's still difficult to optimize and update the cobra engine if possible... and then, although quite unlikely, add atmospherics planets to our approaches.

The anti-aliasing didn't get worse. The aliasing did.

EDO has all kinds of assets that aren't in Horizons and uses effects differently. Both incarnations of the game feature very weak post process AA shaders, but these are only a major problem because of all the extremely high contrast edges that Odyssey introduced.
