Why is distance so random when jumping to different system?

One time I jump to system in order to get to base I need 5 min as the base is 200,000 LS away from me. Another time I jump in and the base is 10,000 ls awya from me.

Am I doing something wrong?

orbits son.. .orbits.

Though. if your truthful about the time between instances, it might be another RNG hand-wavium function to determine where on it's orbital period things in a system are if you're the one starting the instance.

Could it be because the relevant planet has orbited around the star and changed the distance from the nav point?

So planets don't orbit sun in elliptic circle ish thing? I was pretty sure if they not orbit they are asteroids and eventually would fly away as the gravity from the sun would be too weak to stop them?

Every time I jump to new system. Im next to star. The base should be at the same distance every time I jump to that system no?

No idea what ur post mean.

Yeah, you are selecting systems with stations over 1000Ls from the jump-in point :D OK, maybe 2000. If it's over that I just go: ... that! and select a different system to go to.

OK.

Go to the galaxy map.

Click on a planet.

Look at the number under "Orbital Eccentricity".

This number varies from 0 to 1 where:
  • circular orbit: e=0
  • elliptic orbit: 0<e<1
  • parabolic trajectory: e=1
  • hyperbolic trajectory: e>1

Parabolic and hyperbolic orbits won't be in the game.

So you're system with a station with a large distance variation should have a high orbital eccentricity.

So I should cancel 3 of my missions - cargo delivery because the game randomly decides to put the station 10x further away for fun every few jumps in to that system. Great.

Sometimes the station is in front of the planet, later in the day it will appear behind the planet & further away. Everything circles everything, distances change all the time.

What are you talking about? The game doesn't randomly teleport around stations. Orbital eccentricity would not be the cause of such a huge shift as 10 kLs to 200 kLs.
I think the most probable reason is that you are mistaking different stations to be the same.

Also: You can see a station's current distance from dropout point in system view. This is useful when planning missions.

If you're seeing this variation for the same station in the same system, yes. And report it as a bug!

Not by over a factor of 10 in the 1000s of LS range it won't. Either the orbit would be much smaller or, being larger, it would take much longer to have any effect.

I reckon with those huge distances you've quoted, there's a second star in the system and the planet with the base is in orbit around it, and not the one you've jumped in next to.
Sometimes the planet is on the other side of the second star, sometimes it's on the same side as you. Same as Klab's suggested, but on a larger scale.

And why cancel your missions? It's only a couple of minutes extra at most and you're usually given a few hours to do the job.

Could be the star thing. How do I jump between stars with the system?

You know I have better thing to do that idle for 10 min while my ship get to the station.

You can't.

Make sure you never accept a mission to go to Hutton Orbital (about 45 minutes from the main star in Alpha Centauri) unless you enjoy the "zen" of it and have enough fuel to get there.

You learn where these systems are and then you avoid them unless you need them or like them. I like to call those long routes, "Pirate Space" although I've never seen them waiting there. Sometimes they're convenient, line your ship up do some laundry.

You do realise that you are playing an online game? So you jumping or not jumping doesn't change the system? Great. Just check how far the station is before you accept the mission, if it is such a big deal to you...
