Why is engineering still such a grind and clart on??

I am trying my best to get back into the game having grown up with the original back in the 80's but this engineering carry on is really killing it for me :(

I get that you need to gather mats etc but I am just finding it so mind numbingly boring and tedious that I have already logged off 3 times today and almost uninstalled the game :/
Surely it cant be like this and I am doing something wrong to make it so painful???

What's a clart-on?

Hera Tani gives me a clart-on...

I hit the other ship clart-on its powerplant...

"Captain, multiple Clart-ons approaching..."

"I kicked him in the clart-ons...."

"Leeloo," the latest single by Eric Clart-on or,

"The Galactic Tour," a new Galnet Feed series by his brother, Jeremy Clart-on.

I don’t mind that it takes a bit of work to get the engineers and then get the stuff needed to actually engineer the ship. Makes doing it an achievement. And stops every ship in the galaxy from being a top engineered tank. I do have to agree that it can be pretty boring searching for the stuff you need tho. Jumping around more than Kriss Kross to find some commodities for one of the engineers as we speak :p

The way I do engineering is to pretend it doesn't exist while acknowledging that it exists.

Basically, take it slow - if you chase engineering, you'll hate it. I generally do what I want and need to do, and treat engineering as something to do on an informal basis. There are a few unavoidable grinds, but with the right knowledge they can be minimised.

For instance, Farseer is probably the most useful engineer all-round (The Dweller is a close second, IMO). Apart from the FSD mods, her other stuff is largely basic G1-G3 stuff, but it's transformative - G3 dirtry drive mods are brilliant when you've never experienced them before. Additionally, there are a lot of resources online for finding the materials you need more quickly. inara.cz is very useful for looking up the required mats and gaining a general idea of where to find them. There are even online spreadsheets with similar functions. If you're having trouble finding a particular material, you can always ask!

I think of engineering as background content. If you think of it as mainline content, it will drive you mad.

It maybe hasn't changed the grind much if you log into the game with only the immediate goal of engineering something, but what has changed is that you can incidentally pick up much of the material you'll eventually want just by doing something else. It's worth stopping and picking up the materials from ships you destroy, it's worth taking materials as mission rewards, you can get a lot of elements from mining. It probably won't take you to maxxed G5 rolls very fast, but you can incrementally improve things without really focusing on grinding. I wish it had been like this from the start because I have dumped so many materials...or not picked them up in the first place. If they had given everyone a nice nest egg to start to kinda compensate for this it might be interesting to see how people feel.

Nope, it's playing exactly as intended.

It does take a while, but I think that is by intent. Working on maxing out my FSDs in the new system now. Got about 30 arsenic within the last couple hours. Need about maybe 2 times that to max out the FSDs on all my ships. Should have enough for 3 or 4 of them now though. So yeah, it does take a while, but not the end of the world.

I'm glad Arsenic is so easy to find or trade down for now. Chemical manipulators are relatively easy to get hold of. It's those pesky DWE's I absolutely hate. Even the most efficient way of getting them means you'll spend hours gathering some, just to have the goddam RNG at the top of G5 eat them all up like a starving DWE-munching machine. I ran out of those buggers twice the other evening. Twice!

If you are talking HGE's and very rares, then sadly it very much is. I find sitting in deep space waiting for HGE's the least enjoyable part of the game, but I find engineering different ship builds and PvP the most enjoyable, so you can see the dichotomy.

Most accurate guide I have found regarding spawns, sadly though even the right knowledge and experience in the task, will not save you from hours of RnG filled waiting and dropping into USS's.

Please Frontier, before it was only us PvPers that really put up with this, and you could deal with that. But now you've rejuvenated engineers we are getting these threads everyday, surely it's time to do something about this?

^+1 I approve. This is not the grind you're looking for.

Find something fun to do and keep a watchful eye for those hens teeth. I scan every USS I encounter (unless they zip past before I can throttle back), and stop in at every HGE - I never go looking for them, that way lies madness. It may take me longer to max engineer every module on every ship, but meh, I'm having fun along the way.

PS just converted my G5 FSD, four rolls to max the new G5 (+4ly)... well worth the non-effort+patience.

I don't do much Engineering, but what I do do is more short term targeted type stuff, like upgrading all my FSDs to the new maximum now. I'm not really into the PVP meta, so for me there is no real rush in trying to stay relevant with others, just working on things I might want now and then at my own pace.

Next I'll probably want to upgrade my lasers for efficiency or work on getting dirty drives or clean drives some more.

Generally I'm out exploring in a fully combat loaded Vulture, so the game is very much more of a slow burn type game for me. All in good time, as they say.

I found the new system to be brilliant and considerably faster, more rewarding that the 2.4 system. I re-engineered my entire 10 ship fleet over a couple of days. The reduced amount of rolls was considerable.

All I can say to you and anyone else that is having issue or complaining about a grind...

You're doing it wrong. :)

Sorry... That is a fact.

I would suggest doing some research into how the new system works, and perhaps seek out a tutorial authored by someone who actually GETS IT! Not one of those lame complaint based overviews from someone who obviously doesn't.

Regardless of whether or not anyone thinks it's better, or worse, or whatever. It's still just an abysmal time sink with barriers to progression scattered all over it.

The 'sometimes you can max G5 with 5 rolls, sometimes with 13' mechanic is just awful. I should know how many materials I need to collect for a set task before I go out collecting them.

I should also be able to pay the engineers a hefty premium for them to use their own materials so I don't have to waste hours upon hours hoping that a broken RNG system that only sometimes works drops me what I need.

Hahahahahhahahahha hee hah. I cant stop laughing, thank you.
Hope devs see this cause there’s no humour in Elite- borderlands etc.
Thanks.

I’m still finishing it up bit by bit- Serf to king last night- this game.
Anyways its good to complain so maybe they’ll cheer up the ratios at the bingo trader wall.
Pin your blueprints then go to nearer engineers to get experimental effects use the off site engineering to get up to five without returning to original engineer.-
Watch for credit rushes but choose materials to select missions- get your favourite ships up to par later for the rest of your fleet and get back to Playing what there is.

Here’s a link to a CMDR that has it sussed out

I’m doing the same- you my friend have a Crapton of stored mats cause Inara has a simple calculator for mats x rolls x modules and well, it defies your easy peasy shmarmy talk.
Shill I say! Shill Shill SHiLLLLLLL!
But if this is for reals, please do tell your system.
Here’s the best short cut summary I’ve found- https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...ost_strategic_way_to_choose_your_engineering/

But I’m calling Shennanigans on that “way easy” best game ever syrup.

I find Engineers to be more accessible than the last version. Experimental effects were basically only for those folks who were going to roll 10000 times anyway; now it's something you can intelligently obtain and apply.
