Why is this Game called Elite Dangerous?

Honestly, I would like to know. It would be better if the name was shorter like Elite Deadly (4 syllables).

Update Eodemos posted a video with the explanation by Braben (starts at 5 minutes).

I'm sure that the innuendo of danger in the game did not escape FDev and they probably welcomed it.

This is Elite IV, but he wanted something with a fresh start. They've extended the Federation of Pilots which is sort of like a pilot's union in the year 3300. Every single player is a member of this. Every single AI is not a member. So there's already AI putting bounties on the players to respond between people who are grieving players or not. It's to structure it in such a way that there's an advantage to go after AI more so than players so that player-player is more cooperative than competitive. There's a sub-group called the Elite Federation of Pilots. You're part of this federation, admitted to it, but still at a lesser rank. There are massive amounts of contracts (missions) going out for people. Players who are lower rank can fulfill those contracts and reach the status of Elite.

I'm harmless ;) so the title is as close I will ever be to being dangerous.

So, if some people runs out of arguments in a heating debate, they can bring a picture of the title of this game and start assuring themselves how right they are.

Anyway, who really cares about name, content of a game is what really matters.

;)

Why did you name yourself 'Cosmo'?:p
The name always reminds me of an English comedian's character: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js3xIg2pw8w.
I'm showing my age here.:)

Honestly, I don't know.
Speculation alert.
The word 'dangerous' conveys danger? For players who have played the previous games it would play on their knowledge of the pilot ranking in the game; they already know the universe is dangerous. To those ignorant of the Elite universe it conveys danger and excitement, may be terror.
Ask an advertising rep for more theory.
...
How about:
Elite Grief - 3 syllables
Elite RNG - 5
Elite Grind - 3
Elite AI - 4
Elite FA Off - 5
Elite Void - 3
Elite Noob - 3
Just joking:)
...
Now Cosmo, stop being an Elite Navel gazer.:D

Because "Elite: lets kill all the zarking imperials because they shot me down when I just happened to have an illegal cargo" wont fit on the box

The Pilots Federation originally Had within it an Elite Pilots Federation subgroup for, you guessed it, Elite Pilots, whom one could hire for all the most critical of missions.
Eventually over time to keep up with demand they opened ranks to Deadly Ranked Pilots, and in 3320 they again lowered the Entry requirements to Dangerous

I assume that will be at some point tied into a story line

There is a video of DBOBE explaining it but I gave up looking for the previous time it was posted... sorry, but it is dinner time

Interesting that DBOBE talks about the effects of griefers in PvP, wanting cooperative vs. competitive, and the grind to Elite status (and how it took so long that he didn't actually do it without cheating), and "moment-to-moment" gameplay, in that naming discussion. Skip forward 2 years and look at what's allegedly 'killing' the game. ;)

You also don't really see any impact of the Pilot's Federation, or Dangerous/Founders rank in the game either...
