Why no 3rd person?

I can confirm that WT flight model even in 100% realistic mode is not comparable with WW2 planes from DCS or even Il-2 BOS and because of the nature of the game (competetive MP) is full of unrealistic balance issues. I`m not saying WT is bad - hell no its very fun game, but its far from accurate realistic flight sim.

It's not even close, so let's just leave that discussion because it's not valid.

I'd find it both disorienting and confusing to try to actually play this in 3rd person, but it would be nice to have a little tweaking to the existing 3rd person camera to allow us to do things like watch an auto-docking in progress or a jump into hyperspace, if for no other reason, for making film clips.

Just a thought, but how about making it an 'external view module' that deploys little camera drones that you can control and/or set to be in a certain place. If drone takes a hit, drone goes pop, can't be used 'till you launch a new one, or go buy a new one.

3rd person is extremely distancing. It takes you out of the simulation and has you controlling a remote avatar. It doesn't fit Elite at all.

what about the fact that it has been in 2 of the 3 previously released entries to the frenchise?

Because Imm-ah-shun.

And that video showing how someone peeks around the corner of a hut in Arma 3.
Because of this hut no one may have 3PV anymore, because obviously you can cheat with 3PV in Arma 3. And Arma is more real life than real life itself.

Oh, and of course 3PV makes games enjoyable. Can't have this these days. Gaming for some is a substitute for working, so it has to be grinding. You can't have fun working, so you can't have fun while gaming, if you take gaming serious. I blame this all on 60% of today's jobs being actually bull     jobs.

Personally i'm enthralled at the prospects if it's true that FD want us to actually feel like we're flying our ships!

Presumably removal of the speed limit will be their first priority..

At last! I can hardly wait..

I think 3rd person is a good idea. ED already has fantasy game content collecting materials to get your ship and weapons enchanted by the engineer wizards, why not a 3rd person arcade game style view?
Next you could grab something from the fps genre and have magic power-ups floating in space that would repair your hull and overcharge your weapons.
Fun times :)

the secret camera that is avaible needs a better control with lock modus or free cam view and easier to handle than we have the 3rd person view but at least also that we can control our ship then or xD

Well in ED there are a lot of huts we could use to peek over but riddle me this batman, if in Arma 3 (which I play extensively btw) I had a radar that told me your exact position, do you think I'd care if you can peak over a hut?

I'll take that radar anyday please because if I'm hidden from said player peeking over a hut, my radar still works....

In other words, it's a very weak argument and I'm sure it was made in jest - nobody could seriously offer that as an actual argument against 3rd person in ED ROFL!! :)

I think third person would be tricky to fly. Would we see our CMDR pushing the holographic buttons or would the chair be in the way? There's not a lot of window space behind and above the seat, so left and right views may be a little dull to. Maybe first person is the best.

Not quite sure you've got that the right way round mate. They mean like a dash cam, but looking back at the pilot. So you'd be able to fly and fight from an unobstructed view of the expressions on your avatar's face.

Because you're a pilot in a ship, not a pilot dragged by a tow rope outside the ship.

Thorn cuts to the chase and NAILS IT! ... AGAIN! ;)

My thoughts exactly!

Third person is not a typical offering in a SIMULATION Style game, which ED is. I tend to expect that feature in ARCADE style flying games, and other more casual-centric games.

I also think it would be stupid. ;)

So many hostile responses on this forum. I get it. You're extremely passionate about your game, but chill out.

Every flight sim I've ever played used 1st and 3rd person perspectives. Being able to view your entire ship does have it's advantages, but so does flying from the cockpit. I would prefer 3rd person if I had the choice, unless I was in VR.

This is a little old but I have to comment on this statement.

It is completely erroneous. You have never played any of the quality flight sims. Jump on Aces High for a free trial and fly WWII aircraft, the only planes that offer 3rd person are bombers and a lot of us with they did not. Fighter only allow cockpit view for very good reasons. Out of cockpit view is a distinct visual advantage. The same is true here. If I can turn my head and see my opponent unobstructed that is an advantage.

I have also flown other space sims that do not offer 3rd person. I am relatively new here but this is by far the best space sim I have ever played and I am glad I found it. (Wish I'd found it on PC before XBONE. Still might switch)

If you learn to use the RADAR effectively is a great tool.

I understand the whole immersion factor playing from the cockpit, but why is there no 3rd person view option?

You answered your question. 3rd Person breaks immersion. We don't have invisible drones with cameras flying behind us in real life. It also gives unfair advantages over first person.
